From our Coach :
Another great game for the varsity Lady Cavs!! All 21 players saw action during our game and many at different positions that they have never played before. The scoring started a little under 3 minutes in with a quick 1-2 pass combination between Callie Harris and Savannah Swecker right at the top of the box. It was a very nice and quick combo between the two with Callie finishing it on goal. Around 5-10 minutes later Savannah was aggressive at the top of the box and won Martinsville’s goal kick. She took the shot but it got deflected towards the end line. Savannah beat the keeper to it and did a quick pull back and then shot it far post into the side netting to make it 2-0.
With around 8 minutes left in the first half Alison Hall assisted Callie at the top of the box to make it 3-0. With seconds left in the first half Callie dribbled to the end line and then beat a few defenders to squeeze it into the near post to make it 4-0. All 21 players saw playing time in the first half. There were many shot attempts put on frame with lots of them barely missing or taken from the goalie making a nice save.
In the second half, the girls started off strong, again putting many shots on goal. We really moved a lot of players around to different positions during the 2nd half.
We were able to move Jackie Arellano-Torres from center back up into the midfield. She had multiple really good looks towards the goal. Melissa Mize stepped up as the other center back along with Genesis Harmon. Elizabeth Stevens and Kristen Dalton also played very strong minutes for us at the fullback positions on our defense. With around 15 minutes left in the game, Alexis Sheffey was able to come out of the goal and move up to a forward position. Within about 2-3 minutes of being up top, Alexis buried one into the back of the net from a pass from Callie.
This was very exciting because one thing Alexis has wanted to do is to play in the field at some point her senior year. She finally got that opportunity and was able to capitalize it by scoring her first ever goal. Overall, it was a great team victory with all 20 players getting a good amount of minutes. Now we move on to get ready for James River on Friday!
