The Hill – Addie Greene went the distance in the circle and limited the visiting Lady Cougars to just seven base hits, but the effort fell just short in the 5-2 setback in the Three Rivers District contest Tuesday night.
Carroll County avoided the big innings that proved to be their downfall in the first match-up over in Stuart. In both the first and second innings, Patrick County had their leadoff hitter reach base and come around to score to give the visitors an early 2-0 lead.
The Lady Cavaliers drew even in the bottom of the fourth inning when the bottom of the lineup strung together three of the eight base hits. Emma Harman started the rally with an one out single and one batter later, Laiken Burnett continued to enjoy her night of recognition by collecting her second base knock of the contest.
Bayleigh Allen chased the pair home with a two out double, much to the delight of the home crowd at Cavalier Park. Tied 2-2 with three innings to play, Carroll County had a new life !
Patrick County regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning when Lacey Sutphin came to the plate with Ava Hiatt standing on third base. Hiatt led off with a single and advanced twice on ground outs to set the stage for Sutphin.
Sutphin sent a shot towards centerfield that second baseman Raylee Goins knocked down and somehow found a way to throw to first base from the ground. Sutphin beat out the infield single by an eyelash to give the Lady Cougars a 3-2 lead.
Natalie Burress drilled a two out double in the bottom of the fifth inning, but unfortunately, the Junior could not make it home to tie the score.
PCHS added two insurance runs in the top of sixth on a two run double from Hiatt, creating the 5-2 final score.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Allen led off with a single and Holly Miller followed with a line shot to center, but Chloe Hubbard was able to haul it in after getting a great read on the ball.
Greene, in addition to her pitching, picked up two singles to join Burnett and Allen in the multi hit club.
The team will return to Cavalier Park on Thursday afternoon for a 4:45 Senior Day celebration to be followed by a 6:00 first pitch in a Varsity only contest with Glenvar.
