Earlier tonight, we posted πŸ“«a full game story about the exciting Golden Bears 🐻 victory today – the reason for it is the latest sign of how newspapers πŸ“° of ALL sizes are adjusting to declining circulation.

What do the Washington Post, Beckley’s Register – Herald, The Carroll News, and the Galax Gazette have in common ?

Each newspaper has made drastic changes to how they view sports. Gone are the days when sports played a major role in the newspaper industry.

A little over two months ago, the Washington Post, one of the largest newspapers in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ pulled the plug πŸ”Œ on its spoits department as a whole !

The Register – Herald is a solid six day publication in a city where the population of the greater area is just over 100,000. Not all that long ago, we would have someone from the newspaper stop by our games, but they too have trained their readers to expect a different type of sports section. One full of wire reports on professional games with a few local stories that can be generated from a desk mixed in.

The story I wrote tonight was an attemptΒ  for the newspaper to have coverage from one of our games ahead of a doubleheader tomorrow. We will see if it makes the online or print edition ?

The weekly Galax Gazette was forced to make a highly unpopular decision about its Sports department back in the fall of 2023. The newspaper parted ways with a local legend, Craig Worrell, and seriously downshifted its sports coverage.

Where does The Carroll News fit into this story? Another long-time home-grown Homer named Worrell went from being a sports editor to being the editor. Working with a skeleton crew, Allen Worrell was forced into a unique role, and it stayed that way for quite some time.

News and community first and sprinkle in sports when you can. Then, those pesky, Alyssa Ervin led juggernaut won consecutive State Championships, forcing the newspaper to provide Wall to Wall coverage.

The one sport that was never going to lack coverage was the football team. Football is KING 🀴, even at the high school level. Beyond that, sports became an option. How did the Carroll News continue to produce a normal looking sports section for another two plus years ? The answer there was he found a partner in his Homerness ways, and the good news was the person worked for free !

The fella agreed to cover everything that could be covered and then politely step aside when a story grew. The perfect example was when Anthony Barnes and his Cavaliers made their state run, the writer switched from me to Allen. It worked really well for right at three years before Allen stepped away from the position when an opportunity presented itself.

The number of stories I created for the newspaper was well north of 250, and it included state coverage for Track and Field (3 times ) βž•οΈ state golf ⛳️ for Chase Reavis twice. Each time on my own dime and it was because I felt that individuals going to State were of the exact same relevance as teams.

Coaches have to adjust to coverage that comes over the phone and when it’s convenient to an already demanding job of a newspaper editor.

Going back to today, I arrived at the stadium 90 minutes prior to first pitch and then proceeded to call a ballgame that flirted with lasting four full hours. Then, the choice of spending another 90 minutes to create a story on the hopes that it will be used makes for a really, really long day. But in a season full of tough losses, these student athletes deserved a moment in the Sun 🌞.

Somewhere, in the back of my brain 🧠, I hear Danny Glover saying, “Man, I am too old for this stuff”

Now it’s 11:43 p.m., and we get to start all over here in a bit. Sports talk radio πŸ“», ESPN, and social media have  changed the landscape, and I promise you, it’s not going to change back.

Page County Softball completes the week sweep by taking care of visiting Rappahannock County…

Page County won three of three softball games this week by three different means. The victories were over Strasburg 1-0 in a pitcher’s duel, 14 – 11 over East Rock πŸͺ¨ in a back and forth offensive explosion, and finally, one that landed somewhere in between.

After dropping two games against defending State Champs πŸ†, Broadway and one to neighboring East Rock, the team is now back at .500 with a 3-3 mark.

April 15th at Madison County is the next time the Lady Panthers will take to the Diamond πŸ’Ž.

Cody Cooper delivers a walkoff single with his third hit of the afternoon as West Virginia Tech University stuns visiting Indiana University – Kokomo in extra innings !

Beckley, West Virginia – West Virginia Tech University and Indiana University at Kokomo played a baseball game for the ages on Friday afternoon at Linda K Epling Stadium, with the Golden Bears rallying for the third time in a 12-11 Ruver States Conference victory.

Cody Cooper delivered a one out single in the bottom of the tenth inning to score pinch runner Carson Brown( Independence High)  from second base to cap off one of the most improbable victories in recent history.

The visiting Cougars (11-8 RSC, 15-19 overall) took leads of 6-3, 9-5, and 11-9 across the three hours and 47 minutes of baseball, yet the Golden Bears found a way to claw back against all odds.

West Virginia Tech lost starting catcher Angel Leiva to an illness after a red hot 2 for 2 start, which included a double and 2 RBI. Leiva joined Head Coach Lawrence Nesselrodt on the sidelines as the long-time Skipper was forced to sit out one game after a recent ejection at Pikeville University.

Mason Everhart slid the catchers gear on to relieve Leiva and local legend Joe Goddard went from being the bench coach to the man with the plan.

After jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead built around the Leiva double, WVU-T watched the visitors post back to back three run innings in the third and fourth innings. IU – Kokomo rode a baseball rarity to spark the surge, hitting three triples in the rally.

The first Golden Bears rally happened when Beckley native, Maddex Sims, started a two out rally in the bottom of the fourth with a home run.Gabe Templeton and Jacob Tompkins followed with consecutive doubles to trim the deficit to 6-5.

The game took a twist in the middle innings as the pitchers regained control as the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings saw just one run scored. Luke Richards was finally able to make his season debut after a question about eligibility, and the lanky left-hander contributed in his inning plus of work, recording two strike outs.

In the top of the eighth inning, the first three Cougars reached base, and the two runs scored pushed the deficit out to 9-5. The game appeared to be on the way to another close but no cigar effort until Carson Crigger stepped in the box to pinch hit in the bottom of the eighth. Brayden Kiblinger reached on an error and scored on a double by Tompkins to make it 9-6, and Crigger launched a 3-run shot to tie the score at 9-9.

Both teams had base runners in the ninth inning, but neither side broke through with the winning run. The top of the tenth saw IU – Kokomo capitalize on a rare Golden Bear misque to take an 11-9 lead, and for the third time, the Golden Bears refused to surrender.

Gabe Templeton reached base with a hit by pitch, and Tompkins followed with his third base hit to set the stage. One out later, Reece Patterson, the third catcher of the Day, sent a line drive to left center. The left fielder chose to attempt a diving grab that would have been a Sportscenter type play. The ball bounced off his glove and kicked away from both fielders, allowing the tying runs to score and left Patterson standing on second base.

Brown headed out to run, and he beat the throw home on the single from Cooper,  by the narrowest of margins, sending the team and the fans into celebration mode.

Aidan McGlothlin earned the win in relief, thanks in part to his Narrows High School teammate, Crigger.

Nesselrodt could not have been prouder of the effort that his team displayed, and it showed in his thoughts post game.

” We pulled together as a team and played with the heart of a champion today,” Nesselrodt said. ” That was a very talented team that we kept chasing down, and it has me excited about playing two more games tomorrow. “

Nesselrodt, who had been years without missing a game, will be back in the saddle at Noon on Saturday when the two teams return to Linda K Epling Stadium for a doubleheader.
