Tonight on The Hill, we welcome Galax to the ⚽️ pitch, and we have an outside shot at witnessing some Girls πŸ‘§ Soccer history !

6pm start – Varsity only due to injuries for CCHS JV.

When most people hear about a 40-40 club, they think about Major League Baseball celebrating a player collecting 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in the same season. Tonight at Tommy Thompson Field, we have our first opportunity to welcome a third member to our Girls Soccer 40-40Β  club as we host Galax.

The balance it takes to both score 40 goals and assist with 40 others in a high school careerΒ  is truly remarkable. CCHS senior Callie Harris enters play needing three goals and one helper to join two previous club members in the elite group.

Harris added two assists earlier this week against Patrick County High School to bring her totals up to 37 and 39 for her time on The Hill. The goal or assist that will allow our beloved ” Half Pint ” to cross the threshold is far from guaranteed to happen tonight, but it’s the start of the watch party.

What does it take for a player to reach 40 – 40 at the high school level ?

Let’s make a Top Ten list for the answer :

#10 –Β  one has to be committed to the sport for an extended period of time. The countless hours of practice, matches, and travel ball over the years leading up to the high school years is a must.

#9 – Staying healthy. The endurance it takes to play the sport at a high level doesn’t get the attention that it deserves.

#8 – Strong coaching. Any soccer player is dependent upon having a coach with the understanding of the game, which allows the player to be placed in the correct place on the Pitch.

#7 – Avoiding unforseen bad breaks. The reason why Callie is trying hard to be the third Lady Cavalier and not the fourth to join the club is Kaylei Newman missed out due to losing her senior year to Covid.Β  The older of the two Newman sisters would have certainly been a member if not for losing out on her final year.

#6 – Putting the biscuit into the basket 🧺! Getting into the rightΒ  position is only half the battle. Having the leg 🦡 strength and ability to make the split second decision on the correct angle is key to finishing up a play.

#5 – Being a great teammate. This is another one that is undervalued in my mind. The manner in which you carry yourself in the lockeroom and away from the pitch can absolutely πŸ’―% make a difference. More often than not, a goal scorer is put in position by a feed from a teammate.

#4 – Running mates. Ashlyn Newman, the younger of the incredibly talented sisters, is our all-time scoring leader in school history but not a member of the club. Ashlyn played the game at a different level for most of her time here, and that will limit the number of assist opportunities. To collect 40 assists, one has to have others running alongside them.

#3 – Determination. One has to play the game with a level of commitment that others simply can not relate to. Half Pint checks βœ”οΈ this box πŸ“¦, not only in Soccer but pretty much everything she does.

That leaves us the top two reasons that Callie Harris finds herself on destiny’s doorstep tonight.

Reasons 1 & 2 – Two people are in this club already, and Callie has grown up fighting to keep up with her two Big Sisters. It just a Harris thing that even works it way down to family Monopoly games.

Selfishly, I want it to happen tonight while I will be holding the πŸŽ€πŸŽ™πŸŽ€ so we can celebrate it in style ! Maybe, maybe not, but know that when it does happen, there will be a  moment where the little one will breathe easier.

Tuesday night, we celebrated four years of Laiken Burnett and challenged a tough Patrick County team, falling short by a 5-2 score.

The Hill – Addie Greene went the distance in the circle and limited the visiting Lady Cougars to just seven base hits, but the effort fell just short in the 5-2 setback in the Three Rivers District contest Tuesday night.

Carroll County avoided the big innings that proved to be their downfall in the first match-up over in Stuart. In both the first and second innings, Patrick County had their leadoff hitter reach base and come around to score to give the visitors an early 2-0 lead.

The Lady Cavaliers drew even in the bottom of the fourth inning when the bottom of the lineup strung together three of the eight base hits. Emma Harman started the rally with an one out single and one batter later, Laiken Burnett continued to enjoy her night of recognition by collecting her second base knock of the contest.

Bayleigh Allen chased the pair home with a two out double, much to the delight of the home crowd at Cavalier Park. Tied 2-2 with three innings to play, Carroll County had a new life !

Patrick County regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning when Lacey Sutphin came to the plate with Ava Hiatt standing on third base. Hiatt led off with a single and advanced twice on ground outs to set the stage for Sutphin.

Sutphin sent a shot towards centerfield that second baseman Raylee Goins knocked down and somehow found a way to throw to first base from the ground. Sutphin beat out the infield single by an eyelash to give the Lady Cougars a 3-2 lead.

Natalie Burress drilled a two out double in the bottom of the fifth inning, but unfortunately, the Junior could not make it home to tie the score.

PCHS added two insurance runs in the top of sixth on a two run double from Hiatt, creating the 5-2 final score.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Allen  led off with a single and Holly Miller followed with a line shot to center, but Chloe Hubbard was able to haul it in after getting a great read on the ball.

Greene, in addition to her pitching, picked up two singles to join Burnett and Allen in the multi hit club.

The team will return to Cavalier Park on Thursday afternoon for a 4:45 Senior Day  celebration to be followed by a 6:00 first pitch in a Varsity only contest with Glenvar.

For just the second time this season, we opened Cavalier Park with both the Junior Varsity and Varsity set to play, + Laiken Burnett was our Senior of the Night πŸŒ™JV coverage first….

The Hill – Carroll County Junior Varsity returned home to Cavalier Park Tuesday night for the first time in weeks last night, hosting the Lady Cougars of Patrick County. The team was missing their head coach ( illness) and starting pitcher ( moved up for the night) but still put up a good effort against PCHS in an 11-1 setback.

Carroll County was coached by Varsity assistant Travis Leath and held their own minus two half innings. The second and the sixth (final) frames produced nine of the eleven runs.

Kyra Moser led the offense with two of the three hits, and in the bottom of the fourth, she came around to score after a sacrifice bunt from Millie Parker and a throwing error.

Bree Campbell picked up a base hit in the fifth inning but was erased on a line drive double play off the bat of Maeli Parker. The shot from Parker was drilled, but unfortunately, it went right to the short stop.

Aspen Aldred recorded four outs while playing third base, including knocking down to balls headed to left field and finishing the play with a throw across the diamond.

The team was scheduled to play at home against Glenvar on Thursday afternoon, but that game has been moved back until the end of the season.
