Congratulations to all of the Student Athletes who competed today in less than ideal conditions !

Story 9 of 9 takes us inside the lines of Carroll County High School 🏫 Varsity Girls 👧 Soccer ⚽️ and the match at James River on Friday night 🌙

Lady Cavaliers

Marion Harris has many responsibilities here in Carroll County, and one of those hats 👒 he wears is the unofficial Mayor of Cavalier Soccer ⚽️ Town. Last night, our mayor was in the stands for the Girls match with the Knights of James River.

Harris loves the game and is willing to do anything he can to advance the game, especially for those who play it on The Hill. Yes, Marion might have one or two other reasons for making the drive 🚗 up I-81, but love ❤️ for the sport makes the Top 3 !

The match last night remained a nil – nil tie 👔 until 15 into the second half. Alexis Sheffey and the backline defense provided lock 🔐 down protection of the net for 55 of the 80 minutes, but in the end, the home standing Knights snuck in a pair of goals to defeat our Lady Cavaliers 2-0.

” It was a battle, and the bounces just did not go our way!!!” Quote from the mayor.

The team will have the weekend to get ready for a pair of home matches next week at Tommy Thompson Field. Both Monday and Wednesday for both the JV & Varsity with Tuesday night being JV only.

Odd note 📝 about the 12 games that we monitored on Friday.

Carroll County Boys 👦 went 4-0

Carroll County Girls 👧 went 0-4, all against James River

The other four games (Lawrence Nesselrodt and Alan Knight ) also finished 0-4.

Now you know everything that I know as of 1:13 pm on Saturday….

From our Head Coach :

Varsity lost 2-0 to a solid James River team. This game was completely different compared to the scrimmage we had with them at Bengal Bash. During that scrimmage James River controlled pretty much the entire game. You could definitely see how much we have grown as a team because that was not the case this time. We were involved a lot more offensively in this game compared to that scrimmage. I feel like our defense really stepped up and played much better against them this time.

It was 0-0 at halftime and the girls did a great job of keeping James River out of the box. Our defense and midfielders also did a good job of limiting James River’s crosses into the box. This is something they do a lot and are typically very successful with it. I feel like overall we did a pretty good job of clearing the crosses or stopping them before it happened.

In the second half, James River changed up their offensive approach. Both of their goals came from long outside shots from around 25-30 yards out. Our girls kept fighting and had multiple chances on goal. We battled the whole 80 minutes.
Now, for a busy week ahead with Patrick at home Monday, Galax at home Wednesday, and then away @Glenvar on Thursday.

Thank You Ma’am !

Story # 8 of 9 – Lady Cavalier Softball dropped a 7-5 decision to the Knights Friday night up in Buchanan, but know that they went down swinging !

First an update on our injured Lady Cavalier, Bayleigh Allen.

Took Bay to ortho. It was a sprain. Gave her a boot to use for the  weekend and as needed. They told her she was ok to play/practice if she takes it easy and ices,.

Do what the Doctor says, Little Debbie, we miss your bat and glove, but the thing we miss the most is your smile!

Quick turnaround after the road game at Galax and the longest bus ride of the year and missing a player combines to make things challenging for sure.

Both Tammy Quesenberry and Kevin DeHaven were keeping me in the know from start to finish, so when the score reached 7-1, the focus for me was PLEASE let them finish up strong ! It’s been a hot minute since these ladies played in the friendly confines of our Cavalier Park, and a good finish would make for a better weekend.

Finish strong is exactly what happened as our team plated two runs in the sixth inning and then followed that up with two more in the seventh. By the time that James River High School recorded the 21st out, they knew that they had played a ballgame against a very resilient team.

While the offense was reaching another gear ⚙️, the pitching and defense was holding the Knights in check. JRHS is having another strong season, having already reached double digits in victories, so its important to not spot them runs.

Holly Miller and Laiken Burnett led the rally as both Seniors picked up two base knocks on the night. Burnett knocked in Madison Coleman and Emma Harman to account for two of the three RBI’s.

Two of the runs were unearned due to Knights misplayed balls, and the final RBI belonged to Catcher Natalie Burress. Miss Burress had herself a night as well, and one proud Mama, Myranda, has video to show !

In a world 🌎 where a great premium is put on, did you win the game, The answer here is we did not, but I’m proud of the effort on the road, far from home and against a strong team!

Already looking 👀 forward to Tuesday night at Cavalier Park !
