Let’s call πŸ“ž this one : Connecting the dots between Mark Messier, Pappy Meade, World Cup Soccer ⚽️ and going the distance !

McDonald’s is using their marketing tools πŸ”§to promote the current World Cup, and anyone who reads my stuff knows that I’m a sucker for marketing! The Cup shown above came from the local McDonald’s this morning πŸŒ„.

Now that UNC has finished off West Virginia in the college World Series, a quick flip of the channels takes us to Game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals. Note – it’s a great day to be a fan of teams from Carolina as the Hurricanes πŸŒ€ are 20 minutes away from clinching the Cup over Las Vegas.

Back in 1994, before the National Hockey πŸ’ League was still very, very affordable, and when you are raising small children without much money πŸ’°, affordable is an Awesome thing !!!

Our three younger children grew up on Vancouver Canucks hockey. We could cross the Border and watch a game and return home for less than what one ticket costs today.

Pavel Bure and Trevor Linden were two of the stars 🌟 for our home team, and in 1994, we were ready for a serious run at winning Lord Stanley’s Cup.

Lin and I were able to attend at least one game in each round of the playoffs, right up until we faced the New York Rangers in the finals. To this day, I am still convinced that the finals that year were one of the greatest of All-Time. Mark Messier guaranteed the New York Rangers would end their drought by winning game six and seven.

It’s worth noting πŸ“ that another New York team just now ended a historic drought. The photo πŸ“Έ above of Messier holding the Cup still stings a bit, even today. Mess is in the middle of the coverage in the other pic up top.

We knew that we could see a Finals involving the Canucks sometime soon. Then we signed Mess as a free agent, and it was going to happen REAL SOON ! His Canucks Captains jersey is the only authentic one of the 40 in my closet.

Fast forward 17 years and the Canucks finally made it back into the Cup Finals and this time it was against one of the other Glorious teams, the Boston Bruins.

One night, after working all night, I drove from Luray, Virginia, to the parking lot of the Boston Garden. Slept in the car πŸš—, woke up, and had $400.00 in my pocket. To this day, it’s the only time I spent ” real $$$” to attend any sporting event. If $400 didn’t get me in, I would be watching from a sports bar across the parking lot.

Bobby Orr was in the building, and the atmosphere was beyond description. It’s the most amazing place I can remember being involved in, and 15 years later, it still is. Boston won the game and the Cup days later, but I drove back to Luray with no regrets.

Bill ” Pappy ” Meade is the third brother that I never had and for days after the game, Pappy was still trying hard to console me about traveling all that way just to watch my team lose the game.

No matter how hard I tried to convince Pappy that I also lived in the Boston area twice and sometimes the event was greater than the outcome. I never got him to see the magnitude of the game or what it meant to me.

It’s time to bring this full circle πŸ”΅ as Carolina just added an empty net goal, and the Cup is going to the Tar Heel state !

Here in a few days, my long-time and dear friend, Pappy, is going to board a flight ✈️ with his adult sons, Will and Tim. The trio is flying out to San Francisco and will be attending the Australia πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί versus Paraguay πŸ‡΅πŸ‡Ύ World Cup match.

This trip makes me smile for a number of reasons. While I couldn’t convince Pappy what being in the arena for a Stanley Cup finals game back in the day, I fully understand what this trip will mean to Pappy.

Funny thing, Pappy, I know that you felt bad because you felt my team lost that day in the Garden. I laugh because at least I had a team in the game… Australia πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί and Paraguay, really ? You either get it, or you don’t. The World 🌎 Cup is like the biggest thing in the world for 75% of the population.

I couldn’t be happier for my friend and his family, and I hope they have the trip of a lifetime !!!

Going the distance means different things to different people, and when you have a passion, you should chase it whenever you can.

Being that Carolina just won the Cup, this pic seems appropriate !

Our athletic director, being out in Omaha with his family for the College World Series, brings back a flood of memories of my early trips out to Nebraska but it doesn’t help on who to pull for in UNC – WVU ???

We wear their logo on our hats at West Virginia Tech University, so point one goes to the Mountaineers.

But, being that the Atlantic Coast Conference is fighting to stay relevant in a number of sports, including baseball, it’s hard not to want the Tar Heels to defend our honors.

Being that I am watching πŸ‘€ the game outside of New Bern, North Carolina, tie goes to The Heels. The winner of this game jumps firmly into the driver’s seat πŸ’Ί in regards to reaching the Championship series.

The game has moved to the top of the 7th inning and remains knotted at 2-2. UNC jumped out to an early lead, and WVU has answered back with single runs.

Game 2 tonight is the polar opposite of the opener between Troy and Ole Miss. Troy sent the Rebels packing by winning a game(12-8) that often resembled a Church League softball game. Troy and West Virginia are both enjoying their initial trips to the College Baseball version of the Promised Land.

The art of borrowing a photo shows the view of the family for the game. No one should be shocked by the fact that our first family arrived on the early side.

Does a game feel different when you are watching on television πŸ“Ί and you know someone who is watching from the stands ? It does for me, and the fun includes trying hard to pick them out of crowd.

Omaha and Oklahoma City are both destinations for many that in regards to college diamonds πŸ’Ž but the real fun begins with just how creative one can get in regards to fun and food away from the  park ???

What a great play by the WVU catcher on the sac bunt attempt in the bottom of the 7th. Two oops defensively by WVU have set the table for the Tar Heels. Never want to see a game decided by an error. Just like that, Heels have a 2-run triple.

Trip number one involved little children who probably have minimal to zero memory of it, and it was at the old ballpark.

The second time around took place back in 2011, and Head Coach Alan Knight was along for the ride. Great memories, which included an impromptu trip up to South Dakota for a round of golf ⛳️. Why, because I told him that if we did, he would have a story to tell when he returned to Page County because not everyone knows where South Dakota is on a map…..

Just saw Eric Church again. He looks much happier now that the score is 5-2!

DeHaven has been around the game of baseball ⚾️ his entire life. I’m excited about the fact that he is out enjoying the show, and he has his family with him ! It made watching the game a little more fun, and if he were to end up in South Dakota, he might run into Tammy Tobler!

I feel better now because his Mamma couldn’t spot them either.

The answer to why care about others that aren’t kinfolk has finally come full circle as destination Atlantic Beach, North Carolina has finally been reached !

For this one, we turn back the clock ⏰️ to the early 1980s, when life was full of challenges that would be hard to comprehend.

Young, married, and trying hard to find ways to feed your children is the condensed version, but Lin and I would need to find a bag πŸŽ’ of cash πŸ’Έ just to make our way to being poor.

Married too early and lacking any type of education between us, we relyed on Prayer πŸ™ and any carrot πŸ₯• we could put on a stick. One of the challenges to that was not eating the carrot.

To say that we weren’t in a good place would be an understatement! But music 🎢 was free, and Jimmy Buffett was singing about exotic places. This led me to go to a local trophy πŸ† shop and spending $20.00 that would have been better spent on groceries.

We created a trophy that the top part was a ⛡️⛡️⛡️ sailboat, and the engraved part read as follows…

Stay positive, and you will make it to Atlantic Beach ⛱️, North Carolina!

That trophy was part of our life for over forty years. It wasn’t until we left Orcas Island that we said our goodbyes.

Everything in life is about timing and God’s plans. Being that I had never stepped foot on Atlantic Beach ⛱️, today was the perfect time to do it.

Through the grace of God, Lin and I reached a level beyond our expectations, and as promised, we did as much as we could to help others.

Today’s Morning πŸŒ„ Brew is all about the Power πŸ”‹in random acts of kindness !

Each morning, Travis Osborne wakes ⏰️ up and chooses a Bible Verse to send me through Messenger. Then I attach one of five photos πŸ“Έ of him / his family and declare that the day has begun.

Proverbs 14:26 In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.

Sometimes, all a person needs to know is that they are not alone !

This week is The Coast of Carolina Week, and the challenge will be to see πŸ‘€ how many different ways one can get on the water πŸ’§????

Take the extra second and show kindness in the direction of others ! You just never know what impact you could have on someone else !!

Have a Blessed Day πŸ™ŒπŸ˜‡
