Radford – Carroll County Volleyball coach Cindy Edwards has been around the sport way too long the recognize ” moral victories ” but if she did, her Lady Cavaliers earned one Thursday night in Radford.
The scoreboard will show that Radford improved to 10-0 in the Three Rivers District and 17-1 overall by defeating Carroll County (13-8, 4-6) 3-1 (20-25, 25-17,25-17, 25-21). But the Lady Cavaliers battled their host from start to finish, despite playing without two of their four Senior leaders.
Laiken Burnett (hand) and Corrie Delp (ankle ) were both spectators. Add in that Radford is locked in to advancing to the State Championship in Salem next month and you have a perfect recipe for a 3 set sweep.
The opening set was tied at 18-18 when Faith Nicholson went to the service line and the Junior sparked a 7-2 closeout with an Ace and a winner amongst her six point stay. Callie Harris led the team in kills as the Senior finished seven of the 25 points. Brooke Webb added three Kills in the 25-20 winner while Raylee Goins mixed in 2 kills, a block and a service winner for the Lady Cavaliers.
Radford responded in a big way by scoring the first seven points of the second set. The lead stood at 15-6 when CCHS started to climb back into the set, beginning with a Webb kill. Five different players landed at least one kill and suddenly the deficit was just 18-15. This time the 7-2 close out went in the favor of the Bobcats.
Maddie Hyatt stepped up in the third set after Radford opened 4-0. The Junior finished a kill and added two points from the service line to change the momentum. Goins and Arizona Thompson pulled Carroll County to within 13-11 but Radford answered back with eight straight points to put the third set out of reach. The score was a duplicate 25-17 but Carroll County was far from done.
Brealeigh Love landed a kill to tie the final set at 11-11 and a Harris Ace gave Carroll County its final lead at 16-13. Radford relied on its big hitters to pull away with a 6-0 run and went on to close out the match, 25-21.
Carroll County will finally return to The Hill on Tuesday night and close out the regular season on Thursday night. Martinsville (Senior Night) and James River (Pink Out) will provide the opposition as the Lady Cavaliers are set to hold a Pink Out and then Celebrate Senior Night.
Radford captured the Junior Varsity match 2-0 (25-17, 25-19). Paige Ogle and Aaliyah Hampton led the attack for Head Coach Nikki Heflin.
Carroll County High School Volleyball π played Radford on The Hill back on September 23rd, 23 days ago. By the time they play again in their own gym next Tuesday night π the number will reach 28 days.

10/2 – won at Patrick County (37 miles)
10/7 – lost at Glenvar (66 miles )
10/9 – Bye
10/14 – won at Floyd County (29 miles)
10/16 – playing at Radford (40 miles)
333 One way miles on a School Bus π since playing at π‘π π‘. The team has gone 3-2 on the loop and a great deal has happened along the way.
Laiken Burnett was lost for the season with a hand β injury.
Callie Harris joined the 1,000 Dig Club
Corrie Delp injured her ankle.
Through it all, the team has continued to bond with each other and players have adjusted to new roles. Faith Nicholson continues to grow more comfortable wearing the Libero jersey after trading places with Harris.
Next Tuesday night π we should throw a Welcome π Home π‘ party for our road weary Parents and Student Athletes. Maybe hold it in the Gymnasium and invite EVERYONE to join the fun.
Maybe even celebrate Cancer β Awareness by having a Pink Out !
