Need to wish safe travels π to Mr DeHaven today as his Athletic Director duties will take him away from The Hill.
Will close it out with the Junior Varsity players that have spent the past few months growing up under the watchful eyes π of Nikki Heflin and Sheila Harris. This will be their final time together as a group this season as well.
Tomorrow night π we welcome π James River High School π«.to The Hill for a Junior Varsity and Varsity doubleheader. It will be the final time the Gymnasium will be used this fall so it will be the final time of holding the π€ππ€ and trying to make the atmosphere everything it can be.
The theme for the night π is Pink Out as October is Breast Cancer π Awareness Month. It will also be the final time that Callie Harris, Brooke Webb and Corrie Delp play in the gym. Laiken Burnett will also be in the building for her farewell but her cast will limit her to a supportive role.
Each of the three seasons in the School year are as different as possible and then some. Fall is the one that mixes indoors and outside before everyone heads in for the Winter and then outside for the Spring.
Volleyball π will hopefully π play one more match next week in the Regional tournament and our three Cross Country runners πββοΈ will still race next week over in Axton at Smith River. Still a bit more writing β to do but the announcing ends at match point.
The past few years with Cindy Edwards and her program has included a number of Student Athletes who have left their mark on the franchise that is Carroll County Volleyball.
Burnett leaves The Hill as the All-Time leader in Assists and her classmate, Callie Harris became just the second member of the 1,000 Digs club.
This season included a trio of matches with Brittany Kinney and her Middle School team nine nights with the older players.
Nikki Heflin and Sheila Harris teamed up to fill the void created by the retirement of Jason Petty. Kayla Nester stepped into the role of Assistant Coach for Varsity as Maleah Neely stepped away to catch her breath. Kim Weddle rounds out the Varsity staff and Coach Kelly Holderfield assisted at the Middle School.
Add up all of the names of the Coaches and Players in the three levels of the program and you are looking at 60 young Ladies that performed until the watchful eyes π of the ‘Ole Ball Coach “. Each night they did their best to represent Carroll County and know that if they didn’t, Coach Edwards was quick to tell them so.
Going back to the Seniors, they’re final stage is still months away and they have plenty left to accomplish. But when the final point is scored Thursday nightπ it will mark the end of an era where the home Gym is concerned.
Morning π BrewOne more from last night, from Marion HarrisThe Schedule π Howard Mayo with his Motovational NuggetTravis Osborne with his Bible Verse π of the Day:
Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Carroll County High School Volleyball ended their month long road trip in style by celebrating Senior Night and then taking care of business on the court, defeating Martinsville 3-0 (25-13, 25-9, 25-14).
The four Seniors celebrated in the ceremony combined for over two decades together in the Lady Cavaliers Volleyball program. Two of the four received Volleyballs in recognition of career marks. Laiken Burnett will graduate as the All-Time Assist leader with 1,298, despite having to set out the final half of the season after injuring her hand.
Β Callie Harris was playing at home for the first time since joining her Big Sister, Adrienne Harris McGuire as members of the 1,000 Digs Club.
Both Corrie Delp and Brooke Webb play leading roles in other sports at Carroll County High after Volleyball season is over. Delp has qualified for the State Track meet three years running while Webb plays Softball in the spring.
The match itself was very comfortable as it allowed Head Coach Cindy Edwards to play her entire roster, minus the injured Burnett. The Lady Cavaliers took turns shining and it was Maddie Hyatt that went first. The Junior opened the first set on the service line and stayed there until it was 6-0. Hyatt and Harris took turns with Aces and kills in the early run.
Faith Nicholson headed to the back line with the score of 13-9 and stayed there until it was 20-9. Five of the serves never made it back across the net.
Webb had the honor of closing out the opening set with a kill, finishing off the 25-13 opener.
Any question about the second set ended early as both Hyatt and Webb enjoyed lengthy runs at the service line. By the time the dust settled it was 10-1 in favor of the home team. Harris served it from 14-8 out to 20-8 and Nicholson served it out at 25-9. Alyssa Lawson landed a kill and Delp scored on a quarterback sneak, a play made famous by Burnett.
The third set was close at 6-4 until Delp experienced a 10 point run at the service line. Heidi Painter landed the kill that made it 16-4. Clara DeHaven was wearing the Libero jersey in the final set and following the biggest run of the night the only question remaining was the final score.
Β Katie Beasley landed a kill to make it 23-13, Webb pushed it to match point and Raylee Goins sent the crowd home happy by landing an Ace.
Carroll County (14-8, 5-6 in the Three Rivers District) will have one final opportunity to play in front of the home fans. Thursday night is Breast Cancer Awareness Night and the fans are encouraged to wear pink.
Earlier in the evening, Carroll County Junior Varsity defeated Martinsville 2-1 ( 25-14, 21-25, 15-3). The younger Lady Cavaliers finished strong and will look to close out their season on a winning streak as they play their season finale versus James River High School.
