What do Ron Cochran, Marion Harris, and Rick Nester all have in common ? Besides the fact that they are each playing the Back Nine ⛳️ of Life, each of these three coaches are now getting to watch one of their children take their turn as leaders of young Boys and Girls through the art of coaching.
Brandi Cochran Mitchell, Adrienne Harris McGuire, and Adam Nester are each well on their way to taking on the family business here on The Hill. While both Ron and Marion were coaches back in the day, Rick Nester is double dipping as he continues to coach and watch proudly at the same time.
Adam Nester is currently working under the guidance of Head Coach Casey Burcham in the Carroll County High School baseball ⚾️ program, while Proud Papa continues to lead the way down at Cavalier Park with the Softball program. The younger Nester has found himself a home in Carroll County and will have to remain patient as Burcham is just getting started at Bill Worrell Field.
Nester just completed back to back District Championships for the Junior Varsity team, adding to the incredible run of success that former JV Head Coach Steve Combs had. Combs won the league five straight seasons before turning over the ranes to Nester, proving that Carroll County High School is quite the baseball program !
The question about how many more years Pops Nester will keep on coaching is a legitimate thing, but for right now, he appears to enjoy his daily double. Just like Clark Kent continued to be a reporter and wear that Big S on his chest at the same time.
Here shortly, after having to push back the third and final day of soccer camp, Adrienne Harris McGuire will be back at work with future Cavaliers. The Emory and Henry graduate 🎓 was fortunate to hit the ground running, going from a college soccer player to a Varsity Head Coach in the blink of an eye. Dr Ben Tickle played the role of gatekeeper for one season, passing the baton to Adrienne, with the blessing of Principal Thompson and Company.
Season #3 is still months away, but as most coaches know, there is very little off-season nowadays, regardless of the sport. Dad 👨 is still quite the ambassador for the family business, staying active in a number of ways. Proud Papa willing to lend an ear 👂when asked ➕️ referring as many matches as possible along with recruiting and training young players who are interested in learning how to be a match official.
Marion also continues to work with the FCA soccer ⚽️ program and looks for ways to advance the sport in every way imaginable.
The third of the three is the Cochran family, and Ron is closing in on sailing ⛵️ away to full-time retirement. Way back when Ron and Howard Mayo ➕️ a few others, laid the groundwork for the current AAU program, and yes, that is one of several hats 👒 that his only daughter wears nowadays. If a sport is played with a ball, there is a chance that you will find Ben and CC’s Mom 👩 holding a clipboard 📋 or blowing a whistle.
Brandi was the lead assistant coach to Marc Motley for a number of years, including the Back to Back State Championships won 🏆🏆 by the Lady Cavaliers. Since then, Brandi has held down the top spot with AAU along with lending a hand to Corey Williams in soccer and even the Cavalier golf team.
If you grew up on or around The Hill and played sports, there is a great chance that Ron either coached you or officiated one of your games
Harris, Nester, and Cochran could be a solid fit for the name of a law firm, but here on The Hill, it’s just coaches being coaches !
