Houston closes out Bryant 25-18 and will now head back to Texas with a 3-0 record and winners πŸ†of 9 straight sets. Impressive, are these Lady Cougars !

2:00PM – Time for the showdown of the weekend as Florida International University and Duke are both 1-1. Each team lost to Houston and both defeated Bryant University. Slight edge to FIU as they swept the Bulldogs while Duke needed four sets.

Play Ball !

A large number of Purple shirts in the House today as TCU is in town to face neighboring North Carolina.

Bryant University in the stands

I’m impressed by the fact that after their final match was over, the Bryant team came back to watch the final match before heading over to RDU Airport.

FIU takes set #1, 25-22. Duke fell behind 5-0 and was playing catchup throughout the opener. Highly entertaining game.

2:36 – Start set #2: FIU 25-16 in 24 minutes.

Duke jumps out to a 6-1lead in Set #3

FIU calls πŸ“ž its second and final TO with Duke leading 11-2.

My phone πŸ“± just notified me that the Frank Beamer Bowl πŸ₯£ is about to begin. South Carolina – Virginia Tech for the folks that don’t know. Dad’s old School versus the team his Boy πŸ‘¦ coaches.

Duke led 20-8 but now its 23-16 as they look to avoid being swept.

Editors Note – Linda was not handling the comeback well, AT ALL. Thankfully Duke held on 25-20 after once leading by 12.

3:30 – On to Set #4 !

Before Christian hit “The Shot” versus Kentucky, we made the Free Throws to stun the undefeated Running Rebels.

FIU Volleyball 🏐

FIU leads 23-17 late in the 4th set

South Carolina 7-5, odd football score.

4:04 pm – FIU 25-20, ending six Volleyball matches, 20 total sets.

5:00 – First Touch for Women’s Soccer ⚽️

Following the match, the entire Duke roster is positioned at the table for the Autograph session.
Stop βœ‹ 9/9!!

How the number of participants in the High Jump area project let to benefiting the Fall Sports and the Lady Cavaliers Softball program !

The full page ad in this week’s Special section to support the Fall Sports was there because we received enough money πŸ’° from folks like Howard Mayo, Kris Richardson and Travis Osborne βž• Hill’s Shoes πŸ‘ž.

When the guarantee to pay the difference was made, we had to set aside the amount we thought we would need. The good news is that we still had some left over, enough to help fund the Fall Sports Section and create some cool Tops for the Softball team. Added bonus points for the fact we could use the space to invite folks to join us on September 13th!

Β  I wanted to take the time to say Thank You πŸ™ to everyone else that helped fill the space that allowed The Carroll News to create the section.

Yesterday afternoon was spent trying to frame Volleyball 🏐 while watching Volleyball, today its time to focus on the Boys πŸ‘¦ (+ Girl πŸ‘§) Cross Country team(s).  !

First, we start out with the portion of the Fall Sports tab, put together by the hard working Allen Worrell πŸ’ͺ.

Then we add in some color photos πŸ“· received from ” Mom “.

Cross Country is coached by Mr Shawn Montgomery and if West Long has the hardest job on The Hill as our Wrestling Coach, then Montgomery has the loneliest.

Football 🏈 is King 🀴 in the Fall and then you have a dozen or so playing golf. After those two rosters are filled. This season we have four Boys and one Girl competing for Carroll County High School.

In the Black and White photo you have Coach Montgomery, Alex Elepan, Amelia Forsyth, Trenton Newman, Parker Dunn and Will Dalton.

Young Mr Newman is as busy as it gets at the High School level, or it appears that way. Smart and willing would be two easy words to use in describing him.

Miss Forsyth has the honor of being the sole One Man Band or more correctly, One Woman Band as she is the sole member of a Varsity team.

Seeing a Dalton and a Montgomery together is a natural thing as the teachers (Shawn and Shannon) work down the hall from each other. So its a Family πŸ‘ͺ thing for Will Dalton to be running πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈfor Coach.

Alex and Parker round out the group and it will be a goal to be able to add at least one personal tidbit about both young men before the season ends.

October 15th is the lone HOME 🏑 Date on the calendar πŸ“… this year.
Middle School 🏫 Runners πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

Coach has 15 Middle School runners so there’s hope for the Future in regards to having a full squad.

One Coach, 20 runners πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈspread across what is four teams and one program at the same time.

On your mark. Set. Go !

Cross Country returns to action 🎬 on September 6th at Cave Spring !

Diamonds πŸ’Ž are a Girls Best Friend : 50 Shades of Baseball ⚾️, Everyone needs a Baseball Hero and mine was Greg Maddux ! βž• Mini-Maddux, Emma Leath

The Professor

Β  Greg Maddux was not highly recruited back in the day. He wasn’t even the top pitching prospect in his own family as his brother Mike was bigger, stronger and considered to be more suited for a long career in Major League Baseball.

The cover of S.I summed it up best during his prime when they put him n the cover with the tagline, Looks like an Account, Pitches like an Assassin.

Travis Leath found this one a couple of years back and shared it with me.

Going to Baseball games ⚾️ wasn’t part of my Family life as a child but I more than made up for it later on. This was especially true when it came to the end of Madduxs time in The Show.

Maddux sits #8 on the All-Time Wins List in the History of the game.

In 1985, Maddux pitched for the Peoria Chiefs and it was during a visit to the Illinois city years later that I ran into someone who was working at the Stadium and we started up a conversation about Maddux. I was proud to say that I owned a jersey from every team that my Hero had pitched for and by the end of our long chat, the gentleman had created a retro 1985 Chiefs jersey that Maddux had worn.

The thing that made me appreciate Maddux was the fact that he knew that he was never going to be Big and Strong so it was about being Smarter. The stories that came up over the decades were endless and my favorite was the day that he called pitches for Brad Penny when they were teammates on the Los Angeles Dodgers. Back in 2006, when Maddux joined LA late in the season it was Penny that gave up his #31 jersey to the right-hander and then let Greg call his pitches during some of his starts.

In recent years, Emma Leath became the All-Time wins leader in the history of Carroll County High School Softball. It was very easy to call her the Greg Maddux of Softball because of her ability to win despite an average playing weight of 110 pounds πŸ’·.

Location, Location, Location was the answer for Maddux and Leath. It was such a treat to have a great seat πŸ’Ίfor both carrers.

Proud Papa & Big Fan

A Giant Tip of the Cap to Mr Lee Corso and a fun day for the Smoot Family πŸ‘ͺ as ” Not so fast, my Friend ” sails off into the Sunset with one last Big Head pick.

Β Β  Lee Corso made people smile and that has been in short supply the past twenty years or so. Even better, he didn’t step on anyones back in order to do so.

Β  The band at Florida State University spelling out his name down in Tallahassee and the class on display up in Columbus, Ohio was refreshing to say the least.

The World 🌎 needs more people like the retiring Corso !

Russell Smoot and his family surely enjoyed the moment and the outcome of the game between #1 & #3.

Have yourself a Blessed Sunday πŸ™Œ.
