Randolph (Lynchburg) was busy this weekend with a regular season game in Danville and a third try to play their game at Ferrum.

The Randolph College Wildcats ended up on the short end of the scoreboard one time and winning one but the games were on opposite ends of the spectrum.

Let’s begin with Saturday – The Wildcats held on for a edge of your seat 💺, double overtime Victory, 97-95

Cox, last time I talked with him mentioned the possibility of playing Basketball 🏀 overseas after this year. When you are 6’5 in High School you are considered HUGE, when you are 6’5 in college you might be considered Big but in the World 🌎 of professional Basketball, 6’5 is just 6’5.

Take a look at the scoring line for our Sophomore in the win on Saturday. 11 points and one rebound on 3 of 10 shooting from behind the 3-point line. Those numbers are shooting guard numbers, a position that Cox will need to be able to play if he chooses to continue to chase his Dream. The difference between 3 of 10 and 4 of 10 from deep is a fine line between being good and being great in regards to percentages.

Cox and his team might have been a little worn out from 2 overtimes as less than 24 hours later they were up at Ferrum for what they call back to back games.

The Wildcats were limited to just 65 points in the lopsided setback but Cox netted 11 points and four rebounds on the day. 3 of 8 from 3 (.375%) and 4 of 10 overall was the breakdown.

Six of 18 (.333%) over a weekend is clearly a sign of a few things, the first being a Coach with confidence in your game to play the #2 and #3 spots on the floor. ➕ it shows that Cox has been working on his shooters mentality since I saw him last.

The Wildcats have two home games remaining in the regular season and then we will see how the ODAC tournament plays out.

Don’t forget that Mother Nature is multi talented and she might have something to say about the coming week.

Normally we would say that our little player is growing up right in front of our eyes 👀 but in the case of Mr Cox, he is shrinking into a role that might just extend his career.

Let’s start with Roanoke College Freshman Katie Lam. Roanoke is currently riding a 7 game winning streak and sits at 13 – 10.

Lam (5’10) recorded a season high of 13 points and is averaging 2.4 points for the Maroons in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Two regular season games remain before the ODAC tournament.

Elijah Cox is a 6’5 Sophomore at Randolph.  The team currently sits at 7-14 with a game to be made up over at Ferrum.

Cox just recently netted 10 points in a contest, one of his season high of 11 points. Four games remain in the regular season, including two slated for this weekend that are close by

Alyssa Ervin is a 5’11 Freshman at Elon University and the team is slated to play later today at UNC – Wilmington.

Elon is 12-9 on the season and Ervin has logged minutes in 16 of the 21 contests with a couple of them being missed due to the flu.

Ervin also reached double figures with 10 points at Virginia Tech, giving all three of our former Cavaliers at least one game where the have scored in double figures this season. The team competes in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).

The Phoenix have eight regular season games remaining before they play in the CAA post season tournament.

I feel fortunate to have taken in one game each for the trio this season and look forward to seeing how their seasons play out from here.

Elon University is enjoying some success on the court and the current CAA standings reflect it. CCHS career Scoring leader, Alyssa Ervin continues to pick up steam in her effort to edge closer to a long-term spot in the rotation in her Freshman year.

  Let’s start out with the two that are closest to Home. Yesterday afternoon, Freshman Katie Lam and her Roanoke College Maroons traveled up I-81 to Winchester for a tilt at Shenandoah University.

Roanoke was unable to run with the Hornets, one of the teams sitting atop the Old Dominion Athletic Conference but the upside was Katie Lam connected on her one field goal attempt on the day.

  Division III basketball 🏀 has a different roster structure than DI and even D2. The rosters usually have up to fifteen players on them but the degree of separation in the rotation is much smaller. Minutes and opportunities can be limited after the starting five so its important to be ready when the Coach calls your number.

The team is off until Wednesday night when they head up to Exit 240 to face the Bridgewater Eagles.

Batting Second : Mother 👩 Nature

West Long was set to host a Wrestling tournament yesterday on The Hill. The event was set to be the crown 👑 jewel of the Home slate for the 2024-2025 season and there’s no clear path to rescheduling the event.

  Coach continues to work hard on the schedule and the challenges it has created. We look forward to sharing any updates on this, if any are there to be shared.

Hitting in the #3 Hole 🕳, my All-Time favorite Female Athlete – Kelsey Plum

Getting to watch Kelsey across her four year career at the University of Washington created a connection with the 5’6 gym rat that I doubt will ever be broken.

  Plum was drafted #1 overall by the San Antonio Stars 🌟 who moved to Las Vegas and became the Aces. For those of you that don’t follow Women’s Basketball to the same degree, it was Plum’s scoring record that Caitlin Clark broke two years ago.

  The move by the Aces doesn’t guarantee that Plum will remain with the only franchise she has ever played for but its an absolute step in the right direction !

In the Cleanup Spot, we have Cooper Flagg

I do my best to not talk about Duke University Men’s Basketball on my sites or in person. Not that I don’t appreciate their efforts, its that they don’t fit my criteria for pulling for the Underdogs.

  Yesterday, Flagg dropped 42 points against Notre Dame and it turned out the team needed everyone of those points to fend off a determined Fighting Irish squad. Take a look back at the great players that have played in the Atlantic Coast Conference over the years and note that Flagg didn’t just break the Duke Freshman record, he broke the ACC mark as well. Kudos to Cooper…
