Regional tournament play is right around the corner, so we start with who we will be competing against in hopes of making it to State .

Here are the 13 high schools that make up Region 3D.

Abingdon

Bassett

Carroll County

Cave Spring

Christiansburg

Hidden Valley

Lord Botetourt

Magna Vista

Northside

Pulaski County

Staunton River

Tunstall

William Byrd

You will notice that our six Three Rivers District neighbors are missing from the list. All six of those schools are together in Class 2C. This means that 12 of our potential 20 spring contests are played against schools in a lower class.

The VHSL operates on a scoring system in which a team earns points based in part on the classification of your opponents.

We have 12 teams that compete in the spring, but four of them are Junior Varsity. Track and Field, along with Tennis 🎾 has separated competition for individuals as well as teams.

Four teams, coached by Casey Burcham, Rick Nester, Forrest Johnson, and Adrienne Harris McGuire, are currently awaiting word on where they will land in the standings.

One change as of late is the Regional tournament now cuts ✂️ off at just eight teams. Gone are the 7 vs. 10 & 8 vs. 9 play in games.

Round 1 has 1 hosting 8, 2 hosting 7, 3 hosting 6, and 4 hosting 5. Five of the 13 teams in each sport will have their season end this week.

Our Mr. DeHaven has confirmed that none of our teams will host a postseason game / match this season, but the possibility of climbing the ladder 🪜 in the standings still very much exists.

Tuesday night and Wednesday night still matter a great deal, as does Thursday.

Last night, her Dad 👨 shared the scoring, and now Head Coach Adrienne Harris McGuire walks us through her 5-1 victory at Patrick County !

We finally got to resume our game against Patrick that got postponed back on April 1st due to storms. The game started 10 minutes in today so the first half was only 30 minutes. The girls started off quick with Savannah Swecker scoring around 1 minute into the game with the assist from Yeili Urbina. The girls kept the pressure up on the defense and goalie for the next 20 minutes with many chances coming just inches away from going in. Then Patrick broke through and scored after winning a penalty kick in the box to tie it up 1-1. With around 30 seconds left in the half Callie Harris drove down the side and crossed the ball into the box. Savannah ran onto it and scored a beautiful one touch volley. We went into the second half up 2-1.

In the second half, Callie found the back of the net from outside the 18 to put us up 3-1. The girls continued to put the pressure on. Our defense stepped up and did a great job shutting down Patrick’s offense in the second half. Alexis Sheffey had two amazing saves. One was in the first half in a 1 on 1 situation. The one in the second half, Alexis, came out on Patrick’s best attacking player and blocked the shot with her body in the air. This gave us a lot of momentum.

Then Callie found Ithaca Vaught off of a cross in the box to put us up 4-1! Ithaca had a beautiful one-touch volley off of the cross for her first career varsity goal!! Then, with a couple minutes left in the game, Kristen Dalton had a quick start throw in to Callie, who buried it into the back of the net to make it 5-1.

Overall, the girls had a great game offensively and defensively. On the offensive side, we did a great job of getting dangerous crosses into the box and then finishing them. This is something that we have really been working on, and the girls did a great job of executing it during the game.

This win is number 11 for the girls this season!! We have one more regular season game at home on Wednesday against James River!

Tuesday night will be busy on The Hill, and there’s a special event taking place South of the Border !

Quick note – the Varsity Girls 👧 Soccer match at Floyd County is a forfeit win for our Lady Cavaliers.
