Junior Varsity Boys hold off late Galax rally to defeat the Maroon Tide, 45-40.

Written By: Homer McHomerson

Galax, Virginia – Dane Leonard, Hayden Jackson and Colton Gravely took turns leading the way for Head Coach Jason Stockner’s Carroll County JV Boys Basketball team to a thrilling 45-40 victory over cross-county rival Galax Thursday night.

Gravely led the balanced attack in the early going when he netted five of his 14 points in the opening quarter. The Cavaliers defense clamped down on the home team, limiting them to just one basket in the opening six minutes. CCHS continued to keep the Maroon Tide’s offense off balance throughout the first half, carrying a 16-7 lead into the break.

Carroll County kicked their offense into another gear in the third quarter as they matched their 16 first half points in the frame. Gravely led the way with six points during the run while his running mates scored three each. The lead was pushed out to a seemingly comfortable 32-19 lead but this was Carroll County – Galax, after all.

Galax quickly trimmed the lead down to 36-28 with 3:03 remaining before Jackson slowed the momentum with his third three pointer of the contest. Moments later Jackson once again drained a 3-pointer to quite the crowd while Leonard added a pair of baskets. Galax would get as close as four at 42-38 with 0:51.2 remaining but Gravely was able to secure the victory by going 3 of 4 from the free throw line.

Gravely and Jackson shared game high honors with 14 points each and Leonard joined them in double digits with 10 points. Carroll County will have a short amount of time to savor the victory as they return home to The Hill tomorrow night to host the Knights of James River.
