So you want to play baseball ⚾️ in Mid February in the Mountains of West Virginia ???

The first thing you have to do is break up the ice 🧊 in the dugouts.

We are roughly 90 minutes from the scheduled first pitch and the only thing that we have going for us is its a turf field at this amazing facility.

My favorite part of the Stadium 🏟 here is that Mr. Epling filled the outer wall with Bible versus, something that can only happen when a structure is privately financed.

Our Golden Bears 🐻 compete in the NAIA, which exists in addition to the NCAA. Lawrence Nesselrodt and I have been at it since our days with the Waynesboro Generals of the Valley Baseball League ⚾️ and its an adventure at every stop βœ‹ along the way.

This weekend is a perfect example of “Let’s get the Games Played”. This set was originally a four game series scheduled for Friday & Saturday in Beckley. We have tweaked and twisted to the point where today is the last day we can try and get the games played. West Virginia Tech leads the series 1-0 after a walk off win on Sunday. The Sunday game was played up in Charleston at the Go Mart Stadium.

Here is an example of the typical group message to the team :

2 hours, 53 minutes…

Alleghany @ Spotswood Girls πŸ‘§, Cougars and Trailblazers locked πŸ”’ up in a defense battle in Penn Laird

Region play is underway across the Old Dominion and we will highlight two teams that we are very familiar with. Alleghany (17-6) made the long trek over, up and over to Spotswood (17-7). The Trailblazers are surging now at the end of the season, having just run the table in the Valley District tournament.

At the half its Spotswood 16, Alleghany 14. Second Half about to get underway !

Spotswood with a fast start in the second half, pushes their lead to 24-16 @ 4:37 (3rd)

End of the 3rd – Spotswood 36-20.

The Trailblazers are one year up on Carroll County in that this is their first season with their 4-year star, Zoli Khalil. The 6’0 Guard is now playing for a 21-4 Virginia Commonwealth University team and the current team is very, very young. Learning to play without the leadership of a next level player is a challenge and Spotswood struggled at the beginning of the season.

Possible road map to life after Alyssa Ervin next year.

Coach Dodson is about to dispatch a solid Alleghany team from the Three Rivers District, albeit the Cougars were playing a long way from 🏑 tonight. Final minute now. 42-28 your final score.

7:19 – The fighting Dodson’s live to play another day.

Today I had to be corrected by the Plucky Sidekick down on Main Street

I knew something was wrong when the call πŸ“ž came in for me to report to the office 🏒 of the Carroll News earlier today.

David was the bearer of the scolding as it turns out that after mispelling Alan’s first name (correctly spelled Allen) for a year, I was also guilty of pronouncing his last name incorrectly. I had spent many a moon πŸŒ™ watching Todd Worrell pitch for the St.Louis Cardinals and later the LA Dodgers. Todd’s last name was pronounced Wore-L in the midwest and West Coast so I assumed it was pronounced that way everywhere.

In a moment of weakness after David told me the correct way to say it was Whirl, I answered back no its not.

David had no choice but to take matters into his own hands. Thankfully he didn’t leave any visible markings…..

Of course that just a little Carroll News humor but know this, if I am not saying a name correctly PLEASE let me know. If no one tells me after the first time the situation won’t correct itself.

Same goes with a misspelling, there are a large number of names one goes through when they are trying hard to list every member of every team / organization.

 We welcome corrections !
