Raylee GoinsΒ  scored a game high 11 points, including icing the game by going a perfect four of four from the free throw line down the stretch, leading the Lady Cavaliers to a 41-29 victory over Glenvar Friday night.

CC Mitchell joined Goins in double figures with 10 points, giving Carroll County a pair reaching the mark and Laynie-Jo Leonard was next up with eight points.

The team won the game as a team, recovering from a tough second quarter in which Carroll County scored just three points despite getting great looks at the basket across the seven minutes.

Later on the challenge for veteran Coach Howard Mayo was keeping his players on the floor due to foul trouble.

” I loved how we were dealing with adversity in regards to foul trouble,” said Mayo. ” We had different people stepping up in roles that they were unaccustomed to and found success.”

Both Goins and Callie Harris were trying to avoid picking up their fifth foul. Harris picked up her final foul with 4:13 remaining and she earned a nod from her Coach once she left the game for the final time.

” When Callie came over to the bench it would have been easy for her to drop her head and sulk over her fate,” added Mayo. ” Instead she remained completely engaged and cheered on her teammates until the end of the game.”

Both Natalie Burress and Kenzey McMillian added five points each while Kenzie Young accounting for the final two points. Harris and Madison Coleman both played key πŸ”‘ roles throughout with their defense and hustle from start to finish.

Glenvar, still searching for its initial victory on the season was showing great improvement. The Highlanders led the game in the second half and pulled into a tie at 18-18. Facing the challenge, Carroll County answered in a big way as Goins and Burress drilled back to back 3-pointers. The lead became six points and the Lady Cavaliers never looked back.

Goins picked up her fourth foul at 6:55 but after a brief rest, returned to the game. Not only did the Goins avoid the fifth foul, she calmly pushed the lead beyond the possibility of a comeback.

” Once we gain more confidence in shooting from behind the arc,” noted Mayo with a smile. ” Once that happens we will become a very different team out there.”

Once again, the Junior Varsity team was forced to take the night off as Glenvar chose to not field a squad this year. Add those two games to Martinsville ( two games) and now Radford has elected to not complete their season, the team is now down to a single game on Monday night at Christiansburg.

In Mayo We Trust, Milk Cartons and Wow, is tomorrow going to be Crazy, Crazy Day in the Land of Cavaliers !

We will have a Game Story on the Girls victory over Glenvar tonight but first things first. After the game I was fortunate enough to get 10 quality minutes with Veteran Head Coach Howard Mayo. Combined, Mayo and I have over 100 years around the game of Basketball πŸ€, so its a treat to compare notes πŸ“ with someone else who has spent their entire life around the game that I love.

I would include Kris Richardson in this story but the only time I upset 😑 my friend and neighbor was the day I called him elderly. So maybe in another 10 years we could add him to the lifers club.

Once again, our Junior Varsity Girls were denied an opportunity to represent our School 🏫 and Community. Hence, the Milk Carton reference. I smiled when our hard working JV Coach (Hailie Cushman) smiled when I made the reference. The number of times that our younger Lady πŸ‘© Cavaliers were ready to play ▢️ and couldn’t is flirting with double figures.

I appreciate that our team is still engaged and looking to play. Monday night at Christiansburg is quite possibly the final window of opportunity for our Coaches and players.

In regards to tomorrow morning πŸŒ„, we have big events taking place on several fronts.

Wrestling Coach West Long will be getting up at the crack of dawn to take his team to the Regional tournament at Staunton River High School 🏫.

Both of our Swim πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈ Teams are heading up to Christiansburg for their Regional meet.

The day is going to push Shannon Dalton past her unbelievable commitment.

”  Thanks for the well wishes. Tomorrow will be both region swim and region Scholastic Bowl. The day has finally come when I can’t actually be in two places at once.”

You can tell that quote was from Mrs Dalton because I would have used a Capital R in region.

We are going to need some help on a number of fronts to get everyone involved the coverage their day deserves πŸ‘.

Toss in that Elijah Cox and Randolph will be playing at 4:30 pm over in Danville and Alyssa Ervin just finished up down at UNC – Wilmington

Back to Coach Mayo, I am already looking forward to next time our paths cross as the opportunity to compare notes πŸ“ with a fellow lifer is a treasure for someone who has five decades of experience with the game of Roundball

Next stop βœ‹ will be the Girls πŸ‘§ Gamer !
