Kevin Burress checks ✔ in with some appreciation for Mrs. Cochran – Mitchell

As I sit here and watch Brandi coach these girls, it really makes me thankful that we have her.

She gives up so much of her time for the basketball program one can’t help but have love and appreciation for her. She’s incredibly patient with these kids and does a fantastic job teaching them the game. Such a great asset to Carroll County and the basketball program!

Also just found out that this is Brandi’s 2nd practice today in different gyms. And for whatever reason these girls are hyper! Must be all the Valentine’s Day Candy.

Brandi Cochran- Mitchell is Kevin’s Home Town 🏡 Hero !

Tying together volunteering, Carroll News history and a Store that brought back memories. All made possible by a short ride with Coach Nester this morning 🌄

While we were waiting on the truck 🚚 to arrive from Roanoke with the scoreboard this morning, Coach Rick Nester needed to run 🏃‍♂️ an errand. He said he was going to run over to the Sunny Side store.

While I have driven past the store a number of times over the past few years I had no idea of its existence.

Coach immediately started to reminisce about how his childhood was spent going to the store and how the early Christmas 🎄 years involved going downstairs and the joy it brought.

My Grandparents on my Dad’s side ran a similar type store over in Finchley, Virginia. Finchley is not even a bump in the road on US-58, east of Clarksville but it was a big part of our childhood.

Having spent a lifetime in the newspaper 📰 business, I was quick to notice the newspaper stand located inside the store. I was pretty sure that the stand was as old as I am (60) and turns out the rack has been there since the early 1960’s!

The next thing you know we are looking at a laminated copy of a story from the early days.

Check out the prices from nearly 100 years ago.

About the volunteer 🙋‍♀️ aspect to the story. This is one of the three main points in our organization. One of my many ways to volunteer is to help out the good folks at Google Maps. My contributions are closing in on four Million now ! If you offer up a photo 📷 and the place of business is missing one, poof it appears!

Today was one of those days ! I won’t find a cure for cancer or make any life altering discovery in my lifetime but I promise to keep plugging away at being the best possible version of myself everyday. If I can make a few people smile along the way, that’s a Bonus !!
