Less than 48 hours removed from not having enough healthy bodies to play at Magna Vista, Carroll County shows plenty of spunk in 52-40 setback versus Mt Airy Saturday night. All part of our Cavalier Christmas Basketball πŸ€ Classic !!

The Hill – Carroll County High School 🏫 hosted Day 1 of a 2 Day Christmas πŸŽ„ tournament on Saturday with four games being played.

Here’s a link to the story on the Junior Varsity team and its 31-3 victory over the Granite Bears 🐻.

The Lady πŸ‘© Cavaliers have eight available players and 50% of them were recovering from a flu bug. Aaliyah Hampton led a balanced attack with a team high 11 points but the team simply could not dig all of the way out of the early hole.

Veteran Coach Howard Mayo was able to point out the areas where his team will look to improve.

” We lost a tough game tonight 52-40,” said Mayo. ” We had moments were we played well but we also didnt always take advantage our our scoring opportunities. We were 5-19 from free line. We only hit 1 three pointer and for our team to play up to it potential we got to make open 3’s. We will get a chance to get better Monday.”

The Lady Cavaliers used a 6 – 0 run in the third quarter to trim the deficit down to single digits at 35 – 27 with just over two minutes to play. The score remained the same for a long stretch after Harris netted all six of her points during the stretch. Coleman pushed the run to 8-0 with a layup to cut βœ‚οΈ the lead to six but that was as close as CCHS would get.

Hopefully everyone πŸ™ will be closer to full strength on Monday as Carroll County will face a high octane offense on Monday night πŸŒ™.

The 3 – Day event actually started on Friday with games being played in both Gyms.

Carroll County JV Girls πŸ‘§ Basketball πŸ€ roll over Mount Airy in their Christmas πŸŽ„ tournament opener, 31 -3.

The Hill – Carroll County Junior Varsity surrendered an early basket 🧺 to visiting Mount Airy Saturday afternoon but it would turn out to be the only one of the game as our Coach Cushman led Lady πŸ‘© Cavaliers improved to 3 – 0 on the season with a 31 – 3 victory.

Instead of playing four six or seven minute quarters, the teams played two 15 minute halves with a 10 minute break and CCHS was equally dominant in both sessions, winning 17 – 2 and 14 – 1.

Coach Cushman took the time to offer her thoughts on the tremendous effort she received from her entire roster.

” The girls secured another W tonight. This is such a fun group to coach. I can’t let the night go without commending these ladies on their defense, holding Mt. Airy to only 3 points the entire game.

We struggled with help side our first game of the season, but we took that to practice and executed it well tonight. Rylee Woodard had an excellent defensive game. Kate Holderfield continues to be a leader on the court. Madison Adkins came off the bench looking to score and you just can’t ask for better effort from the team.”

Write up from Easy Stats:

The Carroll County JV Girls delivered a dominant 31-3 victory over Mt. Airy at home, improving their perfect record to 3-0 on the season. This commanding win showcased the team’s balanced attack and strong defensive effort, limiting their opponents to just three points across two quarters of play.

Carroll County came out firing in the first quarter, with Milli Parker getting the scoring started with an early field goal, followed immediately by Kate Holderfield adding another basket for a quick 4-0 lead. After Mt. Airy briefly cut the deficit with their lone field goal of the game, Parker extended the advantage by converting both of her free throw attempts. Holderfield then took control, embarking on an impressive personal scoring run that included six consecutive free throws and another field goal, helping build a commanding 15-2 lead by quarter’s end.

The second quarter(half)  belonged entirely to Carroll County, as they outscored Mt. Airy 14-1 to seal the victory. Holderfield continued her outstanding performance, draining a three-pointer and adding another field goal plus two more free throws. Madison Adkins provided excellent support with a perfect shooting display, connecting on a three-pointer to cap off her flawless 2-for-2 field goal performance, while Rylee Woodard chipped in with a solid two-pointer.

Holderfield led all scorers with an impressive 20-point effort, demonstrating great determination by converting all nine of her free throw attempts despite shooting 29% from the field. Adkins had a stellar all-around game, finishing with 5 points on perfect shooting including 1-for-1 from three-point range, while Parker contributed 4 points and showed great composure at the free throw line, going 2-for-2. This complete team effort highlights the depth and potential of this undefeated squad as they continue their promising season.

Galax – Head Coach Anthony Barnes loaded up the Bus 🚌 for the third time this week after having multiple games effected by the weather and this time both the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams returned to The Hill with victories over the Maroon Tide !

Junior Varsity Head Coach Ryan Phillips and his team went 2-1 on the week and now sit at 2-3 on the season following their 41 – 13 victory. The Cavalier defense was after their hosts from start to finish and flirted with pitching a second quarter shutout.

Carroll County controlled the Varsity game as well and the third victory of the season came at a timely spot. Both of the earlier games this week ( Fort Chiswell, Christiansburg ) had been hard fought road tests.

” We got back into the win column again thankfully, its always a tough game playing Galax,  big time rival game with a ton of history,” said Barnes. ”  Galax really gets after it anytime we play them and it was still the same, couse back at it also leaving one on the table at Cburg, we finally got things rolling after halftime, we really started too turn up pressure with our 3/4 trap turning them over and getting to the rim which is our game. Alot of contact on finishing against them but we stood strong. We still struggled with shooting at 3pt line 2-13, and shot  42% from floor.

Had 13 turnovers and bunch unforced ones that we gotta clean that up moving forward. Got some really strong minutes out Reavis( Crystal’s Boy) , and Easter ( Vickie’s Boy) continues to lead us, he had 20pts , 6 rebounds,  6 steals and 2 assits. Glad also that all our guys hit the floor at some point in thus one. Still gotta shoot better and work harder defensively individual and team defensive,we gotta week to prepare for next Saturday with start of Christmas tournament. Few days in-between for guys and coaches to reset. Let’s keep grinding!”

Vickie’s Boy is going to lead the way more often that not but the long term success of the Cavaliers could very well come down to the ability of the players around him to put the ball in the basket.

Rossie’s Boy is starting to look more and more comfortable playing on the bigger stage. His 18 points landed him in the number two spot on the team scoring list. The basketball πŸ€ IQ is comparable to the points scored.

Sam’s Boy πŸ‘¦ also landed deep in double figures, finishing the night with 17. Like Rossie’s Boy, the adjustment to playing at the higher level is continuing to look more and more comfortable.

The fifth and final starter is Elizabeth’s Boy and just a Freshman. Last night πŸŒ™ he matched his jersey number with his point total of five.

Barnes mentioned the minutes played by  Crystal’s Boy and another Senior is Kristi’s Boy. Key πŸ”‘ minutes are needed from the top of the roster to the bottom as the season progresses.

Samantha’ s Boy πŸ‘¦ is another player looking to push hard for more time on the floor and I wouldn’t bet against him.

Post πŸ“« Game Handshake, I hope this never goes away !
