Five Good Minutes with Mr Greg Talley took place during Space Camp with Vickey Ritchie
Over the past five years, Greg Talley has been one of our favorite contributors and that is because of the understanding as to what we were trying hard to accomplish.
The goal for the site was to create a safe place for folks to visit on their computer 🖥 once a day to catch up with as many as possible pleasant moments that are taking place in and around The Hill.
We were never trying to produce hard core journalism but a fun but informative take on the events. Greg coached our Boys 👦 Tennis 🎾 team with a tremendous amount of flair so it was a match made in heaven. Coach Talley gave his players nicknames and tried to make playing for him as fun as possible for the Student Athletes.
Greg was at Special Olympics Basketball with one of his children, Presley. In the spirit of trying hard to brighten others day, Presley has a fun nickname as well – “Money 💰”. Money scored two baskets 🧺 yesterday afternoon and was loving every minute of the 2 hour gathering because Vickey Ritchie prides herself on INCLUSION. My efforts are also about INCLUSION so Vickey and I are a natural pairing.
Another one of Greg’s children is Jabin Talley, the current record holder for Tennis wins at Carroll County High School. After graduating CCHS, Jabin headed over Southwest Virginia Community College where he played his Freshman year. Year 2 will be taking the courses on-line and then a decision will be made on the next stop ✋ along the education trail 👣.
Greg did go on to share a fun story about a recent trip to the golf ⛳ course that included Jabin and three of his friends. Three other former Cavaliers, including recent graduate 🎓, Cody Reece.
There was a moment where a golf club ended up in a tree 🌳. Having seen Reece throw a baseball ⚾️ across the Diamond 💎 at Bill Worrell Field, I can attest to the arm strength 💪of the young man 👨. As the story goes, the efforts to retrieve said club went on for at least 30 minutes.
What did we learn today ?
- Vickey Ritchie is Awesome
- Presley goes by the name “Money ” at Special Olympics.
- Cody Reece has a rocket 🚀 for an arm.
- No Trees were harmed in this story
- Jabin Talley is still chasing his College education.

It was wonderful to be back in the Gym at Hillsville Elementary School 🏫.assisting Vickey Ritchie with her Special Olympics Basketball 🏀 ” Space Camp “.
Due to a series of scheduling issues over the past few months, it had been a hot 🔥 minute since we were in the Gym together and today there was a full house.
The good news is that both Linda and I have safely 🙏 made it to Durham, ahead of the Medical 🚑 Center stay that begins tomorrow.
Watching 👀 Vickey Ritchie be Vickey Ritchie is in a word, PRICELESS !
While its a Special Day for us in Strasburg, its tough to not be hanging out later with Vickey Ritchie and Company back on The Hill.
Through an odd combination of events I will once again have a Sunday afternoon void later today as I will miss out on spending time with Vickey Ritchie and her Special Olympics Basketball family.
Week one of the stretch had us at the Carroll Wellness Center for a swimming 🏊♂️ afternoon, courtesy of Shannon Dalton and members of the Swim team.
Week 2 & 3 didn’t take place as some work was being done at the Gymnasium we use.
Now week 4 has me up I-81 and it be the last time to help Vickey before we head out Friday. Just odd that it played out in that manner.
There have been a decent amount of teams that I’ve spent time around while in Carroll County and each one is completely different but there’s only one Vickey Ritchie.
Maybe its the fact that both Vickey and I are chasing the exact same thing, INCLUSION. Maybe its the fact that the Gymnasium is full of smiling faces and the reason why they are smiling is the entire process is designed for Joy and feel good.
Still my favorite pic of Vickey Ritchie and for a number of reasons. First, I’m a Big Fan of the Lady on the left, her Friend and Neighbor, Brandi Cochran- Mitchell. Second, Vickey has an ability to act with her face !
Here’s hoping that the practice 🙏 goes great today and know that I will be thinking about it from a distance 😊.

Our Carroll County High School 🏫 swim 🏊♂️ teams host our Carroll County Special Olympics Basketball 🏀 at the Carroll Wellness Center!
Mrs Shannon Dalton and members of Joi Ogle’s Swim 🏊♂️ team took the time out of their Summer schedule 📅 to make some people smile from ear to ear.
Whenever I am blessed 🙌 to be in position to assist Vickey Ritchie, I am there for her but with limited photos 📷 because of the sensitivity of her program.
Vickey will have plenty of pics later on but trust me when I say that Shannon Dalton was being Shannon Dalton and it meant the World 🌎 to Vickey Ritchie
