Let’s call this one the story about Wayne Carter, Shawn Montgomery, Phil Mickelson and Aaron Sorkin….

Death Valley National Park is a special place in that its the hottest place on earth 🌎 , the lowest elevation in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ and the largest National Park in the lower 48 states. Biggest, Hottest and Lowest are just three of the things that it has to its credit.

Furnace Creek

Monday morning I headed over to Death Valley and to get there from Enterprise, Nevada one must drive through the desert 🏜 town of Purump.

Aaron Sorkin put the town on the map when he wrote it into a two part episode of his show, Studio 60 almost 20 years ago.

It was wanting to see Purump πŸ‘€ for myself, years ago, that led me to my first trip over to Death Valley. Trip number two came as a means to gather steps πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈon a Monday.

Wayne Carter is my oldest brother and someone who gave his adult life to the education of others. Now in his early 70’s he is searching for the meaning of Life and I can totally relate to this because it is a question I ask myself on a daily basis.

We talked a bit on my drive over and then I headed in to the extreme Heat that is Death Valley.

Welcome πŸ™

On the way you drive through Death Valley Junction which is the definition of a deserted little community that adds to the lore of the name.

The day held only one promise, it was going to be HOT πŸ”₯. Otherwise, it was just an adventure waiting to happen. Well, it turns out that the lowest elevation that a person in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ can play golf β›³ at is -214 feet below sea level. But you have to be off the course by 1:30 pm because of the temperature 🌑. Literally, to HOT to play golf β›³…

Golfing was not on the radar when the day started, not even a little. But when you find yourself at the doorstep of the lowest elevation golf course, how do you not grab your clubs???

The gentleman running the course was over the moon πŸŒ™ helpful and full of stories about the history of the place. One of those stories was about the day that Phil Mickelson was driving through the Valley with his family, saw the same sign that I did and pulled in to play the course.

The line about the Lottery is that you cannot win if you don’t play. It’s a catchy phrase that applies to life itself, at least to me. You never know what you might stumble upon if you are open to exploring.

Was on the ninth green with a long putt for 39 but it wasn’t meant to be. The back nine will have to wait βœ‹ for another day because it was 1:00pm and 119Β° so the course was shutting down for the day. Side note πŸ“ Green Fees were only $22.00.

Now we have to take the story full circle πŸ”΅ and that means Shawn Montgomery. Mr Montgomery, like my brother, has spent his life teaching and coaching other people’s children. At Carroll County High School he teaches Social Studies while coaching both Cross Country in the Fall and Outdoor Track πŸ‘£ in the Spring.

Our current project, running πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ through the month of July, is assisting Coach Montgomery in replacing the worn out High Jump area. There is still time to join the effort and if you write ✍ a check for $100.00 to Carroll County High School you will receive a round of golf β›³ with a cart at Olde Mill Golf Resort in Laurel Fork.

Have yourself a Blessed Day πŸ™Œ!

Welcome πŸ™ to Sunday June 29th and we begin by Celebrating a King sized Random Act of Kindness!

Excellent Uber Driver
The Path taken

As we close in on July 1st, when we change the banner on this site and we make it 100% Carroll County, Virginia, there’s time to share a true OneofUs.Care moment that was made possible by Mr Douglas Owens.

After a somewhat serious health scare on a recent morning πŸŒ„ back in Laurel Fork, the idea of enjoying a 2100 miles drive πŸš— started to dim. With that said, being without our Car was going to create certain challenges as well.

The driving force behind OneofUs.Care is to encourage people to create Kindness by doing for others, as often as possible πŸ™. Douglas made his way out to Laurel Fork and jumped into our little Chevy Trax and drove it across the Country for us.

Β  The fact that its a Trax is relevant because it wasn’t like there was a high end German Sports Car that was begging to be driven.

I arrived in St.George one day earlier, after getting Lin to Missouri, where she will visit with her Mother πŸ‘© and Sister while finishing up her rehab from knee replacement. Made good use of the day by jumping into a one day rental and heading out to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. I created a post πŸ“« from up there but the cell service was a bit spotty

Check out how close the heard of Buffalo πŸƒ are to the Highway!

One of numerous views

There are more photos πŸ“· on the Saturday post πŸ“« as today is about showing gratitude πŸ™ for a random Act of Kindness from Mr Douglas Owens!!

Great step πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ Day!

Tuesday morning will be the official makeover day for the site and this story is an example of one that would appear on a different spot because it doesn’t fall under the heading of a Carroll County event.

Today will be spent in the desert 🏜 town of Mesquite, Nevada where its forecasted to reach 110° but thankfully we have that whole dry heat thing going on.

Thank You Douglas and here’s πŸ™ hoping everyone has themselves a Blessed Day !!

Today’s 20,000+ steps πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈare brought to you by the North Rim of the Grand Canyon ! It’s certainly the COOLEST of the four Rims, by 20 degrees !

68Β° !!!

The North Rim simply doesn’t get the love that the other three Rims do but here’s what I can tell you about why I jump at an opportunity to leave St.George and head over.

It’s going to be 100Β° today in the City but here its almost chilly. 9,000 feet of elevation will do that for you. Three months of the year you cannot visit this Rim because of said elevation but in the Summer its the place to be.

The first thing you see πŸ‘€ when you enter the park is a herd of Buffalo πŸƒ!

Congratulations to the Artists 🎨 formerly known as the Seattle SuperSonics !!

It was the late 1970’s the other time the Sonics cut down the nets after winning the National Basketball Association Championship.

Shawn Kemp and Gary ” The Glove ” Peyton made a couple of strong runs but now after nearly half a century and a 1,973 mile move, Crown πŸ‘‘ #2 is in handβœ‹!!

Wally Walker – University of Virginia

Great seven game series and the Indiana Pacers did a great job of representing the old American Basketball πŸ€ Association!
