Vickey Ritchie and about a dozen Early Bird π¦ Supporters are here trying to apply the final touches ahead of the Racers, Runners πββοΈ and Walkers arriving at Hillsville Elementary School π«.
We would love π to have you join us later this morning π…will be here until we wrap up!
β
10:30 am – The final participants have finished their race. Now its on to the Awards Ceremony…. Over at 11:15am
The week of ” Super Bowl ” level events continues Saturday morning with Hillsville Elementary School π« being the host site for the Annual Boo Ridge 5K and Fun Run πββοΈ.
Vickey Ritchie loves π her Special Olympics group and she loves π Halloween π so just like the old Reeces Penut Butter Cup commercials, when you mix the two you create magic !
Folks will compete for real, others will show up in Costumes and there is fun for ALL ages. The event is so much fun that if you want to stay around afterwards you can help us gather up the 3.2 miles worth of Halloween π decorations.
Roughly ten minutes later, Vickey will begin planning next years event !
Such a tremendous cause and healthy to boot. I will be there to keep Vickey from having to raise her voice and trust me when I say its her Super Bowl !
We will be out there at 7:30 am as Vickey opens up registration. If you want to sleep π€ in a bit just take a moment to pre-register !!
Pictured Left to Right – Dr. Oliver McBride, Roland Hall, Justin Stamper, Danny Choate and Chris Crooke.
First note π – I want to say Thank You π to Dr McBride for taking me out to meet the group Thursday and to each one of them for being gracious with their time.
Galax is home to the Crossroads Institute, which is part of Wytheville Community College. The building was the original Lowes location and it now houses a group of dedicated instructors who are trying hard to make a difference with our Youth.
The main topic is the Fuller Center for Housing and the focus is the homes π‘ that have been built by the group just North of Hillsville proper over the past few years. Dr McBride is very passionate about the Cause and has offered to help me attempt to tell as much of the background and future of the program in regards to Carroll County.
Here is the Link to the first story on our site to help set the stage a bit.
The story above sent me down a path that led me to Dr McBride. Our initial conversation was about how many different people touch the Houses, from the local High School π«, from the Community and from the Crossroads Institute.
The goal here is to offer a platform to any and all of the individuals that give of themselves to create the Housing out on Coon Ridge Road.
We were incredibly fortunate to run into one of the folks that help build the homes during our tour.
David Bowen is pictured here with his instructor Danny Choate.
” Working on the Fuller House gives me a sense of accomplishment that I don’t get from working in retail,” said Bowen. ” It gives me an idea of leaving my mark on this World.”
As I said in the first piece, this is a story that excites me and can be told from so many different angles. Now that I have such an invested Tour Guide in Dr McBride, we might be able to bring even more light to a truly beautiful Cause !
We hope to share the thoughts of each of the four instructors in the coming weeks as well as anyone else involved !
