STUART – At the close of last season Carroll County Head Coach was describing his line up his next team as eight players were graduating. Going from position to position he repeated the thought about just how young the 2023 – 2024 team was going to be.

Fast forwarding to the end of the teams eighth straight victory, a convincing 9-0 contest against a talented Three Rivers District opponent in Patrick County, Coach Nester had a new thought process.

” I will tell you something, these girls can play ball!,” said Nester. ” Top of the lineup to the bottom, they can play ball.”

Addie Greene had a sensational game, both as the Cavalier lead off hitter and at short stop. Greene went 3 of 5 at the plate with three runs scored and one RBI while making four plays in the field, including a catch of a line drive that she turned into a double play in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Holly Miller appears to be getting faster, to the point Nester should worry about track Coach Shawn Montgomery hearing about her speed. Miller, hitting in the nine hole went 3 for 3 with a walk.

Miller used her speed in the field as well, tracking down to fly balls in centerfield and almost making a highlight reel catch on one of the three hits allowed by Emma Leath.

Leath (8-0) went the distance in the shutout, allowing just four base runners on the three hits and one hit by pitch. The Senior finished the night with eight strikeouts after getting two strikes on what appeared to be all 24 Lady Cougars that came to the plate.

Leath now sits just six strikeouts away from becoming the second hurler in the history of the program to record 600 as Cavalier. The next opportunity should come Monday when the team hosts Grayson County.

Emma Harman collected two hits in her three official at bats plus reached base after taking a pitch off her foot. For the second straight game Harman and Laiken Burnett teamed up to record an out on a ground ball hit between them with Harman covering first base to take the throw.

Katherine Lindamood crossed home plate twice after reaching base on a fielders choice and a single. As a team the Cavaliers outfit their hosts 10-3 and ran those 10 hits into nine runs, efficiently as possible.

The four run top of the third inning was highlighted by Greene sending a laser to the gap that the speedster turned into a triple. Miller had opened the game clinching rally with a bunt single and the site of that combination circling the bases was enough the make their veteran Coach smile.

As Coach said earlier, these girls can play and some of than can fly while doing it.

Patrick County took the JV game by a final score of 9-2 after the Varsity Coach spent just shy of 10 hours getting the field in shape to play.

Both Carroll County teams return to The Hill on Monday night to host the Blue Devils.

Quick look at Softball and Girls 👧 Soccer ⚽️ before the clock ⏰ hits Midnight

The Girls 👧 Soccer ⚽️ team had to postpone their home match versus Alleghany due to the condition of the field at Tommy Thompson Field.

The Junior Varsity Softball traveled over to Stuart to face Patrick County. The Cougars defeated the Lady Cavaliers 9-2.

The Varsity team continued their red hot start by defeating a talented Lady Cougars 9-0.

I still have a game story to write ✍ on the Varsity game before heading to West Virginia Tech for our weekend series with Point Park up in Charleston. I will share that one shortly.

In honor of National Grilled Cheese Sandwich 🥪 Day…

Our resident Tennis 🎾 Dad’s – Martin McKenzie & Greg Talley

It only took a month for my opportunity to meet Coach McKenzie and I am going to tell you that he was a treat to get to meet!

On a day that started in Durham, North Carolina, it was stop ✋ #7 that brought me to the Tennis 🎾 Courts as their matches were getting underway.

Here’s Greg modeling the Hoodies that we were happy to provide for the team this season.

To say that the conditions were less than desirable is one thing but today we have hard copy proof !

Somewhere under the layers here you would find Mrs. Paula Richardson and little Gracie ♥…

First it was the wind and then the rain 🌧 ➕ the teams were trying to share the courts. Both teams have dealt with six postponed matches so the need to try and play was imperative.

The Boys 👦 were minus three players and fell 6-3 to Alleghany while the Girls 👧 match was pushed after doubles, with the Cougars leading 2-1.

Both coaches have sent in breakdowns and I will be adding them to this post 📫 once I find the path of least resistance.

Coach McKenzie, you are the Man ! Keep checking your inbox 📥 for that $100,000.00 check !

Here’s Martin’s take :

Girls Varsity Tennis match against Alleghany had to be called because of the weather. All singles matches will resume when we play Alleghany again. Date to be determined.

We were able to finish the doubles matches through the blustery conditions. Emma and Erika (1 and 2 seeds) won their match. Khloe and Maiya (3 and 4 seeds) lost their match, but it was close. Tiffany and Hallie (5 and 6 seeds) lost their match but tried their best.

I was able to finally meet the man, the myth, and the legend Jerry! It was a pleasure to finally meet him.

Thanks Coach !

Last Year Brayden Smoot missed qualifying for State by the slimmest of margins, Wednesday night he erased any doubts !!!!

We missed this from Wednesday

Brayden Smoot qualified for state in the Boys 100. 11.37

Shawn Montgomery is going to need a bigger vehicle to the State Tournament this year as Brayden Smoot joins Corrie Delp and Alyssa Ervin as Cavaliers that have punched their ticket 🎟 to the Top of the Mountain ⛰.

Smoot is a spark plug 🔌 that does the Cavalier Family 👪 proud 👏 regardless of the Sport or Season !

Russell and Mama Smoot have to both be smiling tonight !

Congratulations Brayden !
