Going to start the Volleyball 🏐 Live Blog a bit early tonight as we end the regular season…

The photo 📷 above is for the final player profile that we will run 🏃‍♂️ tomorrow ! Ruth Hylton opened her home 🏡 up to Leny Richter and we will tell that story tomorrow !!!

5:30 – Junior Varsity will play their final match of the season and the final one of the decade long Coaching career of Head Coach Jason Petty.

Their season will end tonight, win or lose and we would like to Thank Coach Petty and Coach Nikki Heflin for their efforts this season ! The season was going to be a challenging one anyway but when you add the loss of two young ladies due to Varsity call-ups, it increased the challenge. Kudos to the team for continuing to try to learn on the fly.

Approximately 30 minutes later the Varsity Lady 👩 Cavaliers (12-8, 7-4) will have their rematch with the Bobcats. Earlier this season, CCHS led 2-0 at home before Radford stormed back for the 3-2 victory.

There’s a great deal on the line tonight in regards to the District Tourney Championship that begins on Monday night.

To clarify this, we bring in the expertise of our Athletic Director Kevin DeHaven to explain…

_______________________________

Tiebreaker Procedure

If there is a tie between schools in the district record, the tie will be broken as follows:
1.  Head to head record of the teams that are tied.
2.  Common opponents outside of district play with equal number of games played versus that       opponent.

  1. Tiebreaker numbers in draw

Standings in the District before tonight :

Alleghany 10-1 (hosting Floyd)

James River 8-3 (@ Glenvar)

Radford 8 – 3 (hosting CCHS)

Carroll County 7-4 (@ Radford)

_______________________________

We know that Alleghany will play host to the #4 seed on Monday night. The Cougars lost their opening match to us and then won 10 straight.

After that it gets very interesting , if Carroll County loses to Radford we will finish fourth and pack our Bags 🎒 for Alleghany on Monday.

If we win tonight we would pull into a tie 👔 for 3rd place with Radford. We would then go to the tiebreaker system outlined by Mr. DeHaven.

There is no guarantee that James River will beat Radford but the Knights are playing lights out right now. JRHS swept both Carroll County and Radford in the past 10 days.

If both Radford and James River win tonight they will 👔 for 2nd and have their own tiebreaker to see which school 🏫 would host the other.

Just for fun, if Glenvar upsets James River and we upset Radford, we would have a three way 👔 for second place. While that would be fun, we would lose that tiebreaker because we would finish 1-3 versus the other two while James River would be 3-1 and Radford 2-2.

So, to wrap up, we cannot host on Monday night or Wednesday night if we reach the finals.

If we lose tonight we head to the Highlands. If we win tonight, chances are we are heading to James River High School.

With all that said, neither Coach Edwards nor I was sure that we would have this to worry about this season. Finishing in the Top Four with less than 10 combined years of Varsity experience = Amazing 👏…

After tonight’s puzzle we can take a look at the Regional tournament and that situation which begins next Saturday with the play-in games.

More to follow once we are inside !

Our Twelfth Volleyball 🏐 Player Profile shines a Light on Miss Corrie Delp !

Corrie Marie Delp

Galax is her hometown (technically she’s a Gladeville girl from Carroll Co.

Height 5’7″.

Parents : Jon & Vanetta Delp

Class – Junior

From Corrie :

I am so glad I chose to play volleyball my freshman year of high school, I’ve grown to love and be very passionate about it. I have great coaches who have brought me a long way from where i began freshman year.

I love spending time with my teammates, getting to grow better with them, and growing a great friendship.

________________________________

From Mom 👩 and Dad 👨 :
We are very proud of Corrie taking on this “new” sport of volleyball (for her) a couple of years ago.

She wanted to try it and we supported her even though she left some success at cross country prior to volleyball.

She caught on quickly and really likes it and has dedicated herself to it with travel volleyball in the off season when she could. She also has stuck with it this year even after an early season broken ankle.

Her desire to rehab and PT the ankle to get back is to her credit. We hope she will continue to love it and work hard to better herself at it. We love her drive. When she sets her mind to something, she does it.

____________________________

From Head Coach Cindy Edwards :

Corrie Delp is so athletic. At the very beginning of the season she broke her ankle at practice.

She was a player we were counting on a lot, but things happened for a reason it allowed other young kids to get valuable playing time. Corrie just got released yesterday, so hopefully, we can get her a little bit of playing time here at the end of our season. Corrie also runs track and plays basketball, she is another 3 sport athlete.

Going to step in here and temporarily fill the Giant shoes 👞 of Assistant Coach Maleah Neely. First I would like to say a GIANT Thank you to Coach Neely for the amount of time and dedication 👏 she has shown in writing ✍ something personal about each one of the Lady 👩 Cavaliers.

Now, in regards to Miss Corrie Delp and her efforts this season. With many of the triple threat Athletes at the High School level, its hard to peg which sport is their true passion. That’s simply not the case with Miss Delp, she is a Track and Field star, having qualified for the State meet in both her Freshman and Sophomore seasons.

Suffering a bizarre accident in pre-season practice that led to a broken ankle, it would have been ever so easy to just go home and rest up for Track 👣season. The fact that Delp stayed with the team in her walking boot and pushed herself as hard as she could shows a few things – first, it shows the level of commitment that Delp has to herself and second, it shows her Love 💘 and respect she has for her Coaches and her Volleyball 🏐 teammates.

Delp eventually made it to the next step which was to dress out for a Match and then finally played a few minutes in the home finally !

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you, Miss Corrie Delp of Gladeville !

Coach Shawn Montgomery is back from Blacksburg and has our Cross Country Race 🏁 Results !

Taking the OneofUs.Care Out of Town Scoreboard on the Road to the 🏡 of the Rams 🐏!!

East River Soccer ⚽️ Complex – It’s Wednesday afternoon and something is about to take place for the final time. In about 20 minutes, Carroll County High School 🏫 Alum KK Newman will take to her home Pitch for the very last time.

We have a few minutes before 1st touch so let’s use it to discuss just why this segment was oh so important to me.

Life is a struggle, pretty much across the board and one of the things that I feel our Youth can use more of is people that they can look up to as an inspiration. Even at the Age of 61, I am still searching for people to look up to. Doctor Oliver McBride is the most recent example of finding one of those types of people.

Kalee Bunn, Madison Stockner, KK Newman, Cordy Gardner, Natalie Harris and Ashlyn Newman are all current CCHS graduates 🎓 that are now chasing their next piece of paper.

These 6 young Ladies along with everyone else not listed are Carroll County success stories and should be viewed as just that. Are any of them going to challenge for a National Championship next month ? Not even a little but what the are doing is setting an example for the ones behind them.

Let’s take a look at the trio that played Volleyball 🏐 for Cindy Edwards. Stockner, Bunn and Gardner all experienced the disciplined manner in which Coach Edwards runs 🏃‍♂️ her program and the also experienced the fact that Coach Edwards simply wants what’s best for them.

They’re all in College now and still playing VB and excelling as NCAA Student Athletes. A young player coming through the School system now should know the storyline behind these young Ladies just incase they could gain confidence from seeing that others were they are now.

The team the Rams 🐏 are facing today is Columbia College (South Carolina). The two teams played early in the season and the Rams will have their hands full.

But today is not about Soccer, its about saluting someone who graduated from CCHS and then went on to play and earn her degree from a College or University. Don’t forget representing CCHS with Class every step of the way.

The Soccer ⚽️ Ball you can barely see left the playing field, hit off my Truck, rolled across the parking lot and found the only hole big enough for it to roll under ( Too weird).

KK Newman is going places in Life and the Trifecta of God, Family 👪 and Education are tremendous 👏 Building Blocks !

Know those who read our site on a regular basis have a bit of an understanding of why this segment mattered to me. You are never too old to have Role Models !!!!

Half-time Score is 3-0 in favor of the Visitors (2:51 pm) 15:00 on the Clock ⏰ for the break……

Earlier this week I spent some time at an event that also included KK and her efforts….

New Format for the Final 14 Days, starting today ! Why does the road lead to Graham High School 🏫.???

Took the time to do my Good Deed of the Day by walking 🚶‍♂️ over to the Home 🏡 bench area to let the staff know where they could find their runaway Ball. They seemed very appreciative !!!

3:07 – Start of 2nd Half….

37:27 – (2), now 4-0…

36:26 – 🐏 ever so close the getting one back.

31:40 – Perfect play on a Corner Kick leads to the 5th goal.

22:12 – KK exits the game after being subbed out. Possible end…

Just as was the case last year for fellow alumni, Adrienne Harris, its time to hang up the competitive spikes but also like Harris, the very, very Bright future lies directly ahead!

17:32 – 🐏🐏🐏🐏🐏🐏🐏🐏🐏score!!!!!!

Final 15:00 countdown has begun, trailing 6-1 after a goal at 14:13. But as was stated before, today has very little to do with Soccer ⚽️…..

Its gone Final at 3:57 pm,

Time to start the 🚗 back to the Village of Laurel Fork (83 minutes)…

And now you know the Rest of the Story in regards to Our Out of Town Scoreboard !

Our 11th (of 13) Volleyball 🏐 Player Profile shines a light on Laiken Burnett !

Laiken & Her Family 👪❤

Laiken Burnett :
I have been playing volleyball as long as I can remember. I love volleyball. It is a relaxing and fun way to take my mind off life and focus on playing volleyball and enjoying time with my teammates. I love my teammates and coaches with everything in me and I am so thankful for all of them. I am so thankful for my family and how supportive they constantly are of me.

From Mom and Dad :

Laiken lives life to the fullest. She loves her family and all her teammates. She is passionate about helping others reach their full potential. She loves volleyball. We are thankful for her coaches and teammates. We love watching her play.

_______________________________

Assistant Coach Maleah Neely :

Setters have a special place in my heart because I was one. It’s an understanding of, “Hey I really know this position because I played it, and I know the weight that the position holds – let me help you carry it until you can do it on your own.”

From my first year with Taylor Jo Burnette (now Dalton) to Taylor Spangler (now Combs), then to Hannah Spangler, then Natalie Harris and Emily Dalton, and now Laiken, there is just an understanding. The setter language is one that many times is unspoken – usually using hand signals, or even just a certain look.

My goal always is for setters to become more independent with running the court – from setting the offense to being offensive. Laiken has started to do that. She runs the floor, but still needs guidance from time to time on what to do and who the hot hitter is. Many times she just needs the reassurance that who she wants to set is a good choice, or that dumping the ball is a good choice. She knows what to do, it’s just that reassurance sometimes is needed. Laiken has stepped up her defense and has led us in digs in 2 or 3 games this season.

She also, unsurprisingly, leads us in assists on the season and is running a super steady offense with our outsides pretty similar in kills. She is leading an undersized and oftentimes outmatched team to some pretty solid games. As a lefty, Laiken is set up to be more of an offensive threat in the front row, and she has worked to make herself an option that other teams have to respect. As good as she has been for us this year, Laiken’s love is across the road down on the Diamond.

She is an excellent softball player and many weekends you will find her covered in dirt, doing one of the things she loves most. All her time playing sports doesn’t take away from her academics though.

She is one of the most studious kids I have been around and takes it seriously. She does not let herself be defined by sports or academics, but instead finds her peace and strength in Jesus. One look at her social media and you can see how much she loves sports, but even before that you see how much she loves Jesus.

With Jesus at the forefront and her stellar work ethic, there is no mountain that she won’t be able to conquer.

_______________________________

Head Coach Cindy Edwards :

Laiken is a Jr. Setter with a lot of ability to control the game our offense runs through her hands and the decisions she makes setting the ball .

Laiken last year had great middles to set to who put the ball down this year she has to distribute it all around more including her self as a hitter when she’s on the front row.

Laiken also has been one of those 3 sport athletes who is very smart and knowledgeable because she see everything so well.
