Hillsville – Head Coach Howard Mayo has to appreciate the fact that his Lady Cavaliers were able to return to playing basketball for just the second time in 25 days. The veteran Coach found reasons to smile Tuesday night after CCHS fell 57-28 to Floyd County.

” I love our ability to continue to compete, no matter the score of the game,” said Mayo. ” The way we attacked the basket from start to finish shows our effort.”

Β  Mayo was down to seven players dressed as Laynie-Jo Leonard joined Faith Clontz on the not available to play list. While Clontz is out for the season, Leonard is hopeful to return after a bout with the flu.

Seven players dressed, all seven saw action and each etched their name in the scoring column. Raylee Goins led the offense with eight points with five of them coming down the stretch. CCHS played the fourth quarter to a 9-7 score, showing the effort that Mayo referred to was evident until the final whistle.

Β  The value of preparation for the next opponent on the schedule varies from team to team. In the case of the ever so young Lady πŸ‘© Cavs, every moment is a teaching moment and Mayo was quick to point out that the scheduling issues due to weather conditions further complicated things for his staff as they look to prepare for the next opponent.

” The goal each game is to prepare for the next opponent,” Mayo added. ” We couldn’t implement what we were working on for the next game when the next opponent kept changing day to day.”

Β  Having three games pushed back during the delay will now create a new problem for the limited roster. After playing twice in 25 days, the team will now race to get games made up over the coming weeks.

Β  Kenzie McMillan added five points while both Kenzie Young and Madison Coleman netted four each. CC Mitchell and Callie Harris finished with three points apiece with Natalie Burress adding the final point.

Β  Floyd County also captured the Junior Varsity game Tuesday night, 45-15. Six different players scored with Madison Adkins, Aaliyah Hampton and Madison Fain each netting three points.

The teams are set to return to action 🎬 on Thursday night πŸŒ™ as they start the uphill climb of getting makeup contests scheduled.

Ladies Night πŸŒ™ on The Hill – Junior Varsity action 🎬 first…

Coaches for the 2024-2025 JV Lady πŸ‘© Cavaliers

Hailie Cushman and her two Assistants, Chenoa Payne βž• Brittany Lineberry are learning and leading on the fly in their initial season of Junior Varsity Basketball πŸ€.

Tuesday night the trio led their Lady Cavaliers against our neighbors to the East, Floyd County High School 🏫.

The eight young ladies playing this year are :

#10 – Ashton Rodrigue

#11 – Madison Adkins

#14 – Bree Campbell

#20 – Aaliyah Hampton

#22 – Madison Fain

#23 – Maggie Carico

#32 – Lily Goad

#44 – Hayden Heflin

Let’s start out by congratulating the players on earning a spot on this year’s roster and showing gratitude πŸ™ to the Ladies giving up their time to Coach them!

The Lady Cavaliers struggled out of the gate, falling behind 11-1 at the end of the first quarter. Fain put the team on the board with a free throw and Rodrigue scored the initial basket 🧺 late in the second quarter.

Trailing the πŸƒ 25-3 at the break, CCHS continued to play hard on both ends of the court. Their efforts led to a 20-12 deficit over the second half.

Six of the eight players dented the scorebook with a trio leading the way with three points each. Adkins, Hampton and Fain were joined by another trio with two points each in Campbell, Heflin and Rodrigue.

The team was one of many at Carroll County High School 🏫 that welcomed the opportunity to return to the court after Mother Nature had put the schedules on Ice 🧊.

Big fans of the folks involved with this effort πŸ‘ and Welcome any and all positive feedback from All involved.

Tuesday January 14th, will today be the Day ?

Β Β Β  Both of our Swimming πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈ teams will look to head to Roanoke today for a meet at Hollins University while both of the Girls πŸ‘§ Basketball πŸ€ teams hope to be in action 🎬 on The Hill.

It’s been a minute since any Hoops have been played by any of the four teams but everyone understands that the thought process has to be Safety First when it comes to transportation.

Welcome πŸ™ to Monday where the Sky is full of Hope (and above freezing πŸ₯Ά temperatures)…..

The schedule is full as many of our Winter teams are set to once again try to return to action 🎬 tonight. Four Basketball πŸ€ teams, Academics and Wrestling are each set for potential road trips here in a few hours.

It’s worth noting that the Girls πŸ‘§ games are set up to be played on different courts as they times are too close for that not to be the case.

πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™ for a speedy recovery this Afternoon down in Winston-Salem.

Get out there and enjoy the somewhat warm weather but still watch your step πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ due to the Black Ice 🧊.

There’s an old saying that when Life hands you πŸ‹, you should make Lemonade. When Mother Nature keeps you from practicing Softball….

Head Coach Rick Nester reached into his bag πŸŽ’ of creativity on Sunday afternoon, attempting to make a positive experience for as many of his Softball players as possible.

Warming up after the sledding !

The best part of the afternoon was no snowman were injured in the making of the chest full of Memories.

At my best attempt of Math, we had eight Lady πŸ‘© Cavaliers, eight Adults, three little ones and two 🐢🐢.

Raylee Goins is the bravest of the Brave but everyone seemed to enjoy their time in the suburbs of Laurel Fork. Coach Nester provided a ride back up the hill after each round of attempts.

The group was just updated about CCHS being closed again tomorrow. We are all ready for life to return to normal and the games can go back to being played. As of now the Girls πŸ‘§ are set to travel over to Martinsville and the Boys πŸ‘¦ up to James River.

We will await official word on Mondays ballgames, which I’m sure will come tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the Lady πŸ‘© Cavaliers have headed back outside for Round 2 of Making Lemonade on a brutal Winter Day.
