It’s rather difficult to try and offer support to all 12 spring coaches when you still have on you have yet to meet. Yesterday, with an assist from Mr DeHaven, I was able to introduce myself to our latest Cavalier to return to The Hill, looking to give back to the community !

Our four soccer ⚽️ coaches are Forrest Johnson and Jeremy Puckett on the boys’ side ➕️ Adrienne Harris McGuire and Brittany Kinney on the girls’ side.

Our four diamond 💎 coaches are Casey Burcham and Adam Nester for baseball ⚾️ ➕️ Rick Nester and Terry Warf for softball.

Our two track and field leaders are Shawn Montgomery and Jon Delp.

Both of our tennis 🎾 coaches are new this season, and both look to build a foundation in their sport. Both Coach Hunter and Coach McGuire appear to be focused and ready for the task at hand.

The goal here is to provide a platform that allows coaches to get the word out about their program, and being that nobody is under any obligation to participate, there will be some discrepancy in the amount of coverage that each sport receives.

While tennis 🎾 doesn’t need someone to announce their sport, the other 10 do. The goal there is to help out as much as possible in hopes that none of our Cavaliers play in silence 🔕.

This week began with Girls Varsity Soccer ⚽️ being called, and today, we move back across the Boulevard to host Varsity only Softball with the added bonus being we will celebrate the playing career of Senior Bayleigh Allen and her Mom, Debbie Odum before the game.

Wednesday night, we stay at Cavalier Park as we try once again to announce a Middle School Softball game ! Unfortunately, the last time we were set to do it, the game was rescheduled.

Thursday night 🌙 will be a multi-tasking  kinda thing as it will begin with Brooke Webb being in the spotlight for Varsity Softball and then back across US-58 Business for the second half of the Girls Soccer doubleheader vs Radford.

Friday Night was set to be Varsity Softball versus Radford, but that one has been moved back until May 11th.

Now Friday and Saturday should be about West Virginia Tech University Baseball, and we complete the week with Vickey Ritchie and Special Olympics Basketball 🏀 on Sunday afternoon.

We have just over four weeks to maintain the current pace, but the WVU-T Tech season ends next weekend, which will lighten the load considerably.

We have 12 head coaches and a slew of assistant coaches, and don’t forget about our hard working Middle School coaches.

The goal is to treat each one of them equally in regard to both respect and coverage. Is it a pipe dream ? Sure, but it’s one that I’m willing to chase for another month or so.

Wednesday, April 22nd, is a day set aside to watch the Nester Nine play a home game, and the following day, New River Community College is playing up at Pulaski at 1pm. Three former Cavaliers are fixtures on that team that is ranked in the polls.

Being that it is springtime, Mother Nature gets the final say on everything.

It was a treat to meet Angela Hunter yesterday afternoon, and I hope that we hear more from her down the road.

Jeremy Puckett and our Junior Varsity Cavaliers opened the night in Floyd County with a 3-0 victory over the Buffaloes 🐃 ! The victory was the third of the season for the younger Cavaliers.

In the nightcap, Floyd County returned the favor and by the same score of 3-0.

Both teams are set to remain away from Tommy Thompson Field in their next match as they are slated to play in the Bobcats den at Radford on Thursday night.

The girls got it done on the Hill tonight!! They started from the very beginning with Alisia Torres Lopez scoring just 57 seconds into the game with an assist from Callie Harris. For the next 15-20 minutes, Savannah Swecker, Alisia, Callie, Bibiana Rojas Bautista, and Nathaly Contreras kept shots and crosses going towards goal with many coming inches away from going in. Floyd’s goalie also did a great job turning some of the shots away.
With 15 minutes left in the first half, Callie Harris found the back of the net with an assist from Valeria Rosales. Then just 3 minutes later, in the 12th minute, Valeria had another beautiful assist to Callie, who finished it into the back of the net to make it 3-0. Sydney Bomberger, Valeria, Ithaca Vaught, and Yeili Urbina kept the offensive pressure up for the 2nd part of the 1st half. Yeili Urbina had 2 beautiful corners right through the middle of the box that just missed turning into a goal within inches.

In the second half, the girls started out strong again, missing many just wide or over top of the goal. We were able to find the back of the net with around 4 minutes left with an assist from Savannah to Callie for her third goal of the night to complete the hat trick.

Our defense did an amazing job tonight with the shutout and only allowing Floyd to have one shot on goal. Our defense consisted of Jackie Arellano-Torres, Genesis Harmon, Elena McKenzie, Aliza Hardy, Yuleimy Solis, and Melissa Mize. Only allowing 1 shot in a game is huge. Our defense did a great job of breaking down any of Floyd’s offense and never really allowed them to get it started. Alexis Sheffey added her 2nd shutout of the season and another shutout to her impressive goalie career.

We did a lot of subbing tonight due to us having 3 games in 4 days this week. All of the girls did a great job of stepping up when they were in, even if it was a short amount of time. I also had many girls step up and play positions that they do not normally play! Overall, it was a great 4-0 win for the girls!

The Hill – Nathan Jones is the man 👨 that keeps oh so many Cavalier student athletes upright and cared for off the field / diamond / court. Monday night, we needed him not once but twice during the Galax – Carroll County Middle School soccer match.

The more severe injury involved a Galax player and his arm. The entire process lasted between 10 and 15 minutes, and from start to finish, Jones handled a highly sensitive injury with a combination of medical knowledge and compassion.

Jones remained with the youngster until his big sister arrived on the scene, and fortunately, Sis is a nurse at Carillon, so the transition from one station to another went as smoothly as possible.

Moments after the dust settled, Jones was pressed into service once again, this time for what appeared to be a bloody nose on a Cavalier player.

While we would all prefer that Mr. Jones didn’t have to jump on the golf cart and race to an injury, Monday night was just another example of our MVP in action !
