The Hill – Pulaski County sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning and rode the red hot start to an 11-0 victory over the homestanding Lady Cavaliers.
The contest was shortened to five innings due to the run rule, and the timing of the final out lined up perfectly with the weather going from a drizzle to a down pour.
The forecast forced the schools to make two adjustments on the day. First, the flip-flop of Varsity first and then starting the game a few minutes early. First Pitch took place at 4:55 with a slight drizzle falling from the sky.
Terry Warf and Alec Horton will have to wait to play their Junior Varsity game at a later date as the umpires and coaches agreed that they would be challenged to get the field ready again.
The Cougars took advantage of every opportunity in the decisive first frame. Four walks, one error, and a hit by pitch coupled with four base hits led to an 8-0 lead. The two hardest hit balls of the inningj turned into the final two outs of the uprising.
Carroll County tried to cut into the lead in the home half of the first inning. Addie Greene and Natalie Burress both reached base after two were out, but they would be stranded on base.
After the unfortunate start, Carroll County actually held the hard-hitting Cougars in check. The visitors were limited to single runs in the second, third, and fifth innings.
Freshman Ava Beamer pitched the fifth and final inning in relief of Emma Harman and Greene.
The Lady Cavaliers finished with nine base runners 🏃♀️ and four of them advanced to scoring position. Each time the Cougars managed to record the final out to keep CCHS off the scoreboard.
Natalie Burress collected two base hits and ripped a deep drive to centerfield in her third at bat. Greene and Harman both reached base twice, but each time, they were left on base.
Down to the final opportunity to extend the game, Burress slapped a single to move Harman over to second base. Goins hit a bullet back up the middle that gave the home fans hope, but the ball was knocked down and deflected, leading to a game ending ground out.
Kudos to the Junior Varsity players and their families for riding out the weather without having the opportunity to ever take the field.
