All four teams will return to the court later today versus the Bobcats. This time the Boys will board the Bus ๐ and the Girls will defend The Hill.
Teams simply don’t go two plus weeks between games but if there was an upside to the long break it was the recovery of Kate Holderfield. The JV Girls played hard during her absence but had dropped four straight games after starting 7-1.
Head Coach Hailey Cushman and her team welcomed back their leader against the Knights. The spillover effect benefited the group as a whole. In the closeout quarter Holderfield went 4 of 4 from the charity stripe and Hayden Heflin snagged five rebounds, scoring on a put back with one and Milli Parker added a free throw.

In the Boys JV game the visiting Blue Demons hit the ground running and never looked back. Christiansburg led 35 – 11 at the break but give credit to Ryan Phillips and his team as they battled to the final horn.
Head Coaches Howard Mayo and Anthony Barnes share an office ๐ข space and entered Monday night simply not knowing what to expect from their teams after the LONG break. The answer wasย Day and Night at both the beginning and the end.
Playing on The Hill and with the light show introductions, Barnes received the definition of a perfect start ! One that belongs in a time capsule for future generations to appreciate.
Just 19 seconds into the game Blake Reed drilled a 3-pointer from the wing and Will Motley added a put back basket ๐งบ one minute later to make it 5-0. Colton Gravley joined the fun with a shot from behind the Arc and at 5:06, Isaiah Easter made a free throw to push the lead to 9-0 against the team seeded third in the Regional standings right now.
Maybe the strongest start to a game against a quality opponent under Barnes. It would have been great if we could have just called Game and moved on to Radford but that isn’t reality.
The Blue Demons found their footing and made a strong ๐ช run but the Cavaliers still lead at the break, 35 -34. The visitors looked for the knock out punch ๐ at the start of the third quarter as the opened with a 9-0 run to take a lead they would not relinquish.
But the resilience of Carroll County was showcased over the final four minutes of the quarter. Reed moved into double figures at 11 with a bucket and Trace Reavis scored on a follow. Hayden Jackson added to free throws to pull the Cavs to within 45-41 before The Possession took place.
Christiansburg finally scored a basket on its fourth shot attempt. The offensive rebounds were being stacked up like Pringles and the lead was back to six. Motley drilled a 3-pointer before the end of the quarter to cut โ๏ธ it to 50-47.
Carroll County had two good looks from behind the Arc to tie it upbut both bounced away. The next run was 7-2 and the shots stop falling down the stretch.
Barnes shared his thoughts on the effort that he received
” Tough one, we battled hard. Was very impressed with effort and energy, felt like at times we really had a shot too grab this one. Then we went cold ,only 18 points for the second half, hats off too the on switching up defensively on us with got us away from getting into the lane and forcing them to stop us. To play the way we did vs #2 team in the Region is impressive with 2 week layoff, Isaiah really had to play hard on both ends making 24 work for every shot. Easter 17pts, 5 rebounds ,4 assits with constant fresh guys on him, Blake solid 13pts ,12 rebounds for double double. Will chipped in 8, could have easily be 15 but shots did not fall thru.Got some great minutes out of Trace , 6 pts,6 rebounds and two assits. Quick turnaround to Radford, told guys we gotta keep digging , scratching and fighting ๐ช and they will do just that.”
If you describe the start for Barnes as something to cherish, the start for Coach Mayo and the Lady Cavaliers was one that everyone would like to forget. Before the break the offense had been improving every time out but the Knights were able to hold Carroll County scoreless in their 13 – 0 opening quarter.
Raylee Goins (10 points) ended the drought at 7:15 of the second quarter and CCHS played the frame to 14 – 11. CC Mitchell scored seven of her 10 points during the solid second quarter and the teams headed to the lockeroom at 27 – 11.
Sadly, Cave Spring continued to apply pressure and ended the question of the outcome with a 17-1 run across the third quarter.
Playing with a running clock and trailing 44-12, the Lady Cavaliers finished up as strongly as possible. The team doubled up their 12 points while limiting the home team to just three. Not the game that the team hoped for but the solid finish should spill into the home game with the Bobcats.
Let’s do this again and again this week !
