Sunday is Special Olympics Day whenever possible and this morning 🌄 Vickey Ritchie is on the road with Brett Petty at the Hokie Half !

Brett Petty is pictured here running 🏃‍♂️ alongside his mentor, Justin Ward.

Blacksburg, Virginia –

The gang got an early start this morning and were out in full force to support Brett in his efforts !

Brett has been competing in a few events as of late and when he does, he’s never alone. Absolutely love 💘 the signs !

Justin’s wife Krista and daughter Kylie Ward, runners in their own right but spectators today (pictured below). They and Justin run in Spartan races. Brett has done one with them.

No rest for the weary as the group will still be meeting up for Basketball practice from 3pm to 5pm at Hillsville Elementary School 🏫 later today.

Others cheering Brett on include

Charlotte and Dr David McPherson and Agape and Jeannie and her younger Sister (pictured above). Vicky Town is in the Blue Jacket.

Great to see folks supporting 👏 Brett!

His mentor, Justin Ward was expecting Brett to run it out an 11 minute pace which is faster than he’s been training. He was hoping for a 1030 pace but in actuality he averaged a 10:16 pace, which is excellent.!!

A Sunday morning 🌄 like No other. Reflection might be the best Word…

6am on a Sunday morning and trying to figure out what is the next logical step 🚶‍♂️ in the process. Today was supposed to be the back end of a Appalachian State University Field Hockey 🏑 weekend in Boone. But as you see in the photo 📷, above, Boone won’t be the same for quite some time.

The School has gotten together with the folks from Central Michigan University and found a field in Charlotte to play on today. CMU was already in the Commonwealth, having played at James Madison University in Harrisonburg on Friday afternoon.

Back 🏡, our place is still without electricity (Friday at 10am) so wanting to race back is tougher. Love the fact that the High School 🏫 is opening the doors 🚪 again today to help those in a similar situation.

The number of towns in our region that will never be quite the same for a long, long time is heartbreaking. My own personal experience with my very first Car 🚗, a 1971 Mercury Comet, after it went underwater in a subdivision during a Flash Flood, reminds me that the Car never smelt normal again. Having to swim out the window to keep from drowning was interesting as well for a 17 year old.

Galax, Fries, Marion and Radford are just some of the local communities that I have seen photos of that will be dealing with this for a long, long time.

Happy that our Cross Country team had a diversion on Saturday as did our High School football team. Such an odd Sunday morning 🌄 and I don’t see how it can keep from being an odd Monday morning.

Prayers for everyone dealing 🙏 with the oddness.

Volleyball 🏐 Player Profile #4/13 shines a light on our Callie Harris !

#10 has been on the back of a Harris Sister for what seems like forever and Coach Cindy Edwards knows that this is the final daughter of Shelia and Marion. Fortunately, Edwards will have Callie for one more season.

Callie Grace Harris

Hillsville Va

Marion and Sheila Harris

11th, Class of 2026

5’2

First we will hear from Assistant Coach Maleah Neely :

Callie Harris. The last of the Harris girls to come through the program. Every year I’ve coached, I’ve had the pleasure of having one of the girls on my team.

It started with Adrienne being my senior year team manager and is going to end with Callie as a senior next year. What an absolute joy to coach those girls and have them in the program.

All three brought different things to the team – Adrienne and her fire, Natalie and her calm, and now Callie and her tenacity. Over the last few years, Callie has worked to make herself a back row terror. In the last 4 games, she has only been targeted in serve receive around 20 times, while our other passers have been targeted that many times, sometimes in one game.

That shows the level of respect Callie has garnered from opposing coaches and is a testament to just how well she is passing right now. At times, she is taking up more court space to be able to pass in serve receive. Not only that, but she is taking up huge chunks of court defensively and is having a stellar year for us, even having a monster 47 dig game against Marion earlier this season.

She is not just one dimensional. She is killing opposing passers from the service line and has had multiple 5+ ace nights across the season. Callie has shown up night after night and just puts the work in to anchor our defense.

In the off from volleyball season, Callie is a key member of both the basketball team and the soccer team at Carroll. She has worked to make herself an asset in all three of her sports, but selfishly I want her to continue playing volleyball after high school (we will see if I can convince her). I will be sad when the Harris playing journey at Carroll is over, but I’m loving all the memories that we have made and I can’t wait to see what else is in store.

Head Coach Cindy Edwards :

Callie is another 3 sport athletic athlete. Callie has been in the gym with use as long as I can remember she may have been in the 4th grade. We would let her do certain things and then pull her off.

I get after her a lot to be more vocal and to own the court because that’s what the lebiro is supposed to do. But what a great job she is doing the first game of this season she broke the school record for digs with 47 in 4 sets. Wow, amazing . But the good thing is she is just a junior.

Dad’s Take :

Callie continues to amaze me with how she represents herself, her family, and her school.

She has the ability to lead by example on and off the athletic court or pitch. I think the thing I am most proud about is the way she has a big heart for others and will do anything to help others out!!!

Love you Callie Grace and we are so proud of you and your team this year!

Mom’s thoughts ;

Callie has always been a go getter. She fights for what she believes in and never gives up.

Finally, let’s hear from Callie herself :

I enjoy be able to play sports for Carroll, Rampage Volleyball and Virginia Surge Soccer.

I also love to be able to help the kids and others that come to our camps as well as our open gyms. I have always loved being able to inspire the younger players that come to our camps in addition to being the best role model possible for them.

I also love to show that I play through the glory of God and show that I play for HIM.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we present our #10, Miss Callie Harris!
