Good News / Bad News in regards to our next battle with Mother Nature.
The Good News is that Softball Camp (46 campers ) is going to get started here at 3pm for Day 2 of 3.
The Bad News is the folks coming down from ROANOKE to finish setting up the seats πΊare going to reschedule due the threat of rain π§ tomorrow.
With just 12 days remaining before the Alumni Game it will now be a bit of a challenge for everything to get done by then. But we will keep a hoping and a πππ.
Scott German is Chris Graham’s partner in crime up in Waynesboro. Each week during the πππ season one of them will take a look at the league.
Β The sad part for me in the UNC upset loss at home to James Madison University is that it prevented a match-up of 4-0 teams when the Tar Heels load up the Bus π for the nine mile drive over to Wallace Wade Stadium π this Saturday.
Β Duke – Carolina football has produced insane games the past few seasons, including the Double OT race to 50 points last year. Sadly, the Battle for the Victory Bell π isn’t front page news on Tobacco Road. It’s remains one of my favorite days of the Year, win or lose.
Β Travis King is a Sports fan that I believe lives in my neck of the woods. King recently penned a piece about loyalty to a program and realistic expectations of said program. While I don’t know Travis personally, I was impressed by his words in regards to Virginia Tech.
Β It was 50 years ago that I decided that I wanted to attend Duke University. One small thing prevented it happening, complete lack of intelligence. Other than that, I was spot on qualified.
Β Ended up living on Campus and pumping Gas β½ for the folks that actually got into the School π«. But I have been a die hard fan of the University as a whole and the Football team more than all others. When you are a Duke Football fan you have different expectations.
Β Terms like Big Boy Football are not part of the day to day and Cold weather Bowl games for 6-6 teams are welcomed. This year I looked up and down the schedule to see if we could sneak out 6 wins as we started the Manny Diaz portion of our Football legacy. First thing that had to happen was we had to open 4-0 ( which we did) because like everyone else, it appeared the league was loaded for Bear π».
Β Four weeks into the season some teams, like Scott mentioned, are simply not as scary as the might have first appeared. Still doesn’t change the fact that we are 0-for-Life against Florida State. Two wins in the next eight games gets us to the Great White North (Annapolis, New York or Boston). Anything beyond that is Icing on the Bowl π₯£ cake π.
Β Remember that a Duke Football season has only ended in a Bowl game 10 times in my 61 years, so not going to become greedy!
Back to Travis for a minute, I could not agree with him more in regards to his take on remaining loyal to one’s program. In my mind, I look at College the same way I look at High School. Your School should be Your School π«.
Β Imagine if someone asked about who’s your team in High School and the answer was in Golf its Floyd County, in Baseball its Alleghany, in Football its Radford and in Softball its Carroll County.
Β In regards to Duke, we have attended at least one sporting event from every team except Wrestling and we hope that scratch that one of the list this year. But Football is King π€΄ for me because its where we face the greatest challenge, by a wide margin.
The biggest difference between say Duke and FSU or Virginia Tech or SMU is that there was zero expectation when the season began. Getting picked 15th in a 17 team league sets the bar pretty low.
Β We have 8 more games in five different Stadiums and I know where I will be sitting for each of those. Cheering on the Blue Devils! Travis mentioned that with all of the money π° being tossed around now that going to Miami is more appealing than Blacksburg. If that’s true I don’t think Durham is a must-see destination for Big Boy Football players.
Β Schools are often labeled Basketball schools or Football schools. Let’s call Duke a School of Higher Education with an Amazing Hospital π₯ and a fun Football team. Don’t forget we have a Volleyball team that lets the Basketball team use their Gymnasium.
Β Uva is 3-1 now and they do have a shot at getting to 6-6, which will look great after the past two seasons. Sometimes a Cold Weather π₯Ά Bowl π₯£ can be a good thing, just not repeatedly.
Β Now, if we can get Travis to not use Daniel Jones as a way to say that Barkley is in a better place this year, but that’s another battle.
Victory Bell π game this Saturday afternoon !!!
The non-district victory moved Head Coach Cindy Edwards team to 6-5 and 3-1 in the Three Rivers District. The team will have a small window to celebrate though as they return to action tonight at Patrick County as they finish up a three match in four days stretch.
The combination of the busy stretch and having a few nicked up players led Coach Edwards to mix and match her lineup card from start to finish.
” I thought it was a great chance to play everyone tonight,” said Edwards. ” At the same time not play some that need to rest their injuries.”
Aza Petty led the way with another double- double as the Senior finished with 12 Kills and 12 Diggs. Junior Callie Harris flirted with joining Petty in the most difficult of ways, finishing up with 11 Diggs and a match high 8 Aces. The duo shared something more than stats against PCHS, they were listening to their long-time Coach offer encouragement to her younger players throughout the night. Something that they could appreciate from their early playing days.
One of those younger players is Freshman Raylee Goins. Goins reached double figures in Diggs with 11 and added four Kills and three Aces. Junior floor General Laiken Burnett also recorded a double-double with a match high 24 assists and 15 Diggs. Burnett was impressive with her setting in large part because she was tasked to pass to more teammates than normal.
Carroll County wasted little time in taking control of the opening set as Ali Wright scored a Kill and followed it with two Aces to push the lead out to 11-3. Pulaski County pulled within 14-9 but Harris followed a Burnett 2-ball Kill with three straight Aces to push the lead back to a comfortable place.
Wright is on the list of dinged up players and she would see limited action π¬ the rest of the match. This created extended playing time for fellow Sophomores Maddie Hyatt and Faith Nicholson.
Hyatt finished two early Kills in the second set and Nicholson added two Aces during the 11-3 opening run of the second set. Petty and Harris took over the next stretch with 3 Kills and 3 Aces respectively, pushing the lead out to 16-5.
Hyatt added two more Kills near the end of the 25-12 victory and then Coach Edwards began to raise the bar for some of her youngsters.
All season long the topic about this year’s team has been how young they were before losing Corrie Delp to an ankle injury. The total number of Varsity years for the squad was in single digits. Yes, Petty and Harris have been playing the game since they learned how to walk but a number of the players are still getting their Varsity feet wet.
Yes, the team is incredibly young and Edwards has been pushing buttons and pulling strings for almost four decades now. A second tag needs to be added to the one about being young and its that they are very, very coachable. So when Edwards started Coaching her younger players more noticeably last night, both Harris and Petty had to be thinking about their early days.
On to the third and what would be the final set, Carroll County pushed their Third Set winning streak out to five straight matches. After dropping the third set to both Marion and Alleghany, the team has not fallen short since.
Pulaski County did not leave the Gymnasium quietly though. Their Junior Varsity team became more engaged during the final set and the Cougars clearly fed off the energy.
PCHS led 7-3, then 9-4 and finally 10-8 before a barrage of Aces would eventually give the lead back to Carroll County. Burnett and Harris picked up two apiece during the decisive run.
The play of the match came at 23-20 Carroll County. Goins went well to her right for a point saving Digg and the ball π rocketed across the court to Petty, where she reached across her body to start the one armed Kill that set up Match Point. Carroll County closed out the night at 25-20.
Very Young and Very Coachable.
The Junior Varsity team battled their counterparts from start to finish Monday night. Pulaski County won the match 2-0 (25-23, 25-22) but the Lady Cavaliers were knocking at the door πͺ both sets.
Both team return to action tonight over in Stuart versus Patrick County.

Football π – Mason Crockett was seated right behind Press Row and a number of his teammates were up in the Student section.
Basketball π – Senior Ethan Richardson was in the building and did a nice job holding the π€ππ€ and talking about their upcoming season.

Kevin DeHaven is an A-Lister but does it count if you have to be there? Let’s give his nod to Mrs.D
Glenvar – Our CCMS ladies brought it to the courts in Glenvar! They played very excited and energetic in the first set. It was fun to watch, as they played and cheered with, and for one anotherβ₯οΈ They took the lead early in the set, but took the loss 25-17. They went on to lose the second set 25-9. These Ladies may not have gotten the win, but they definitely showed how a Team should operate! A big thank you to Coach K and Coach Sarah Alderman. Your efforts are Paying Off. Proud to be a CCMS CAVALIER!!!
