Shorthanded Carroll County fends off visiting Honaker, 2-0

The Hill – Head Coach Ben Tickle welcomed back Breanna Shumate from a recent injury and the junior played a key role in helping Carroll County hold off Honaker, 2-0 in a Non-District Soccer game Wednesday night.

Shumate found Ashlyn Newman with a touch pass Midway through the first half and the scoring phenom found the back of the net with 18:01 remaining on the clock.

The early goal would prove to be the game winner as keeper Alexis Sheffey and Tickle’s last line of defense proved up to the task for the full 80 minutes.

The team was playing without three regulars in the lineup which limited the substitute options but the rookie Head Coach pushed all the right buttons and was aided by the two water breaks, one in each half.

The Lady Tigers play a slightly more physical game and that helped them keep the Carroll County offense in check but they were not able to control the ball on the offensive end long enough to find the back of the net. When they did have a good look, Sheffey day friends came up with the answer.

Carroll County doubled their lead just over five minutes into the second half with sophomore Callie Harris finding Newman for her second goal of the contest. The second goal proved to be the final one of the match as the two teams played the final 34:25 to a scoreless draw.

CCHS improved to a sparkling 5-1 at Tommy Thompson Field on the season with the lone setback coming at the hands of Radford in overtime. The club will need to make up home matches against both Glenvar and Alleghany.

Savannah Swecker and Sarah Alderman were away from the team yesterday but will be returning while Riley Hawks is out with an injury.

Honaker 0 0 – 0

Carroll Co 1 1 – 2

From Coach Tickle –

The Lady CAVS had another solid defensive performance. The defense is led by Karmen Smith, Laurel Sutphin, Bre Shumate, Alexis Sheffey at goal, and Harleigh Riggins at the six. Yesterday, we were without Sarah Alderman, but we were pleasantly surprised with the play of Jackie Arellano who filled in on the back line. Offensively, Ashlyn Newman found the back of the net two more times off two great assists. Bre Shumate played up and made a great pass over their line to set up the first goal, and Callie Harris sent a dime to the center setting up the second goal!
