The Southwest Virginia Community College is still trying hard to get their first game of the season played but it won’t be today.
After not be able to get their games in last weekend, the team was set for Friday and Saturday down in Raleigh, North Carolina on Saturday and Sunday. S/S turned into Sunday/ Monday. This morning 🌄 was the next change, now just a double header tomorrow at 1 & 3.
West Virginia Tech Golden Bears 🐻 Baseball ⚾️ is running into similar issues up in Charleston, West Virginia this weekend. Their 3 game set has also been reduced to just a Sunday double header, starting at Noon today.
Fifteen years ago is when Pistol Pete threw out the first pitch of the Lawrence Nesselrodt era !

Quick update in regards to our Banquet lineup. We had asked Glenn Burnett to speak early on about what it takes to be a Parent and a Coach at the High School 🏫 level. I have a great deal of respect for Mr. Burnett and when I extended the offer to him I told him he was my only choice.
Turns out that we won’t be able to make that happen due to scheduling conflicts. We know that anytime you plan an event you will never get everyone you want because Life happens all over the place.
A number of folks we would have loved to have join us will be down in Tennessee that day with the travel Volleyball 🏐 as well.
True to my word, we won’t attempt to replace the segment with another speaker.

On the Page County front, Alan Knight and Big Daddy Brian are still up at Liberty University where they are taking in the efforts of Maddie Gordon and her Penn State Nittany Lions softball. Miss Gordon had a 3-hit game yesterday, including a Home Run.
5:30 tonight is the Tip for the Duke Women’s game versus #6 NC State inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. I hear 👂 that a talented group of young Ladies are set to perform !

Blacksburg – The fourth quarter of the Region 3D Championship game was the non-stop action across the entire eight minutes and it was fitting that it ended in 21-21 draw. Fortunately for the Abingdon Falcons the led by seven points heading into the frame, allowing them to capture the Region Championship 64-57 over Carroll County.
Thursday afternoons victory over Magna Vista placed CCHS into the Championship game, right after the fourth seeded AHS dispatched top seeded Lord Botetourt. Both teams entered Saturday having played one game at Cassell Coliseum but the second time around was played with a high energy buzz throughout the building.
Alyssa Ervin entered the fourth quarter with 18 points on the night and proceeded to score 19 more in the final frame in an attempt to bring the Cavaliers back from a double digit deficit in the third quarter. Abingdon countered with a similar type effort from Annsley Trivette, keeping the hard charging Cavaliers at arms length.
The 6’1 Trivette didn’t score in the opening quarter and was held to just six points at halftime. Over the final sixteen minutes she netted 23, including 15 in the final frame.
Carroll County trailed 29-21 heading into the final minute of the second quarter when Sarah Alderman connected on a 3-pointer to take the team into the lockeroom with a bit of momentum.
The Cavaliers defense on the perimeter did a great job in the opening half, especially when it came to the 3-point line. AHS ran an offense that was designed to create quick triggered attempts from distance and only four of those attempts found the bottom of the net before the break.
Carroll County struggled momentarily coming out of the break, committing five turnovers in the opening minutes of the third quarter. The Cavaliers would eventually settle down but they were trailing 37-27 when they did.
Katie Lam (8 points) and Ervin both connected once from deep in the third quarter and when the team connected on four straight free throws to open the fourth quarter they had the Falcons within their sights at 44-40.
The game changing play took place right afterwards. While Ervin was the lone Cavalier in double figures, Coach Marc Motley received a tremendous defensive effort from his seven player rotation. There were five times that CCHS forced off balance jumpers that created air balls but each time Trivette was standing in just the right spot.
The fifth time led to a three point play that broke the momentum and on the next possession Peyton Carter found a hard charging Trivette on a back door cut to push the lead back to nine.
For the remainder of the contest Abingdon was willing to take time off the clock on every offensive possession but Ervin was quickly creating offense on the other end of the floor.
Ervin twice cut the lead down to just three points with the final time being at the 1:32 mark. The Region 3D Player of the Year sank all three of her free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt.
Shortly after that the Falcons missed two free throws but Trivette corralled the rebound and layed the ball in the basket for the deciding points.
Carroll County now travels over to Lynchburg for a 6pm clash on Tuesday with an undefeated Liberty Christian Academy team. Abingdon heads back down I-81 to host Turner Ashby at the same time.
The best of both Worlds would be a rematch with Abingdon with the winner advancing to the State Finals.

For the second time this post season a talented Carroll County Basketball team ran into an Abingdon Falcons team that had a taller than normal for High School player in the post. The difference for the Lady 👩 Cavaliers is that falling short to AHS Saturday afternoon doesn’t end the remarkable season for Carroll County.
Abingdon held on to win the Region 3D Championship in Cassell Coliseum, holding on 64-57 over CCHS.
Where the Boys 👦 Basketball team didn’t get a do over after they couldn’t stop a front line of 6’9, 6’6 and 6’3, our Girls will lace up their sneakers 👟 again on Tuesday night against an undefeated Liberty Christian Academy squad.
Annsley Trivette is the Falcons 6’1 center and even though she’s just in her Sophomore season there have already been a number of Division 1 offers.
One of the schools 🏫 listed there was Elon University. Our Alyssa Ervin will be suiting up the Phoenix next season. Imagine that, a College team were these two are playing in the same front court.
Tuesday afternoon we will be heading to the Lynchburg area for a Quarterfinal game with a familiar foe in LCA. There were two match ups between LCA & CCHS last season with our Cavaliers coming out on top both times. First in the Adam Ward Classic and later in the State Tournament.
Let’s take a look at what took place today at Virginia Tech.
AHS led 43-36 after three quarters and both of the team leaders stepped things up a notch. The final eight minutes ended up as a 21-21 draw, leaving the margin of Victory at seven points. Ervin (37 points) won the fourth quarter showdown between the two, 19-15 but the Lady 👩 Cavaliers could not get back to even.
Ervin converted both versions of a 3-point play to pull the Cavs to within just three points with just under 4:00 to play but could not pull even.
Trivette ( 29 points) closed out with six layups and five free throws over the final eight minutes.
The lead grew to double digits at 37-27 during the third quarter after CCHS committed six turnovers in the opening minutes of the second half. Carroll County continued to play tough defense and only committed one more turnover down the stretch.
How good was the defensive effort? Five times Carroll County forced an air ball from the Falcons, only to have the possession produce four put back layups and two made free throws.
Quick math says 10 points for them created off our playing tough defense. Three points more than the deficit at games end.
We played a well balanced team, played them tough and simply came up a little short.
The beauty is now we get a do-over on Tuesday night 🌙. We are in the State Eight and have the possibility of playing three more times !
