Let’s not forget the upper left of today’s Carroll News
How dedicated is Shannon Dalton to our team ? She passed on taking our Company Jet to the meet, saying she wanted to experience exactly what are Student Athletes are facing.

We are hoping π for nothing but the Best for our Swimmers πββοΈ and we know that we are going to receive Top Shelf coverage from Poolside!
Last night the Three Rivers District acknowledged the following things about our 2023-2024 Carroll County High School Boys π¦ Basketball π team…
Head Coach Anthony Barnes was named District Coach of the Year!
Davis Reitzel was named 1st team All District and District Player of the Year!
Bryce Smoot was named to the 1st team All-District !
Ethan Richardson was named to the second team All-District!
Congratulations πππ to all four of these folks for being acknowledged for their efforts. Now, we will borrow a page from the NBA an expand our list of Praise !
Assistant Coach of the Year :
Kris Richardson
Most improved Player :
Isaiah Easter – Easter was pulled up to the Varsity at the end of his Freshman year for the final few games. Everyone knew he had the Basketball IQ and the moves to play at the next level but the question was could his body take the punishment ?
After spending a summer in the weight room, sculpting his body, no one can question anything about his game anymore. It will be interesting to see if any of the current JV players will attempt to follow suit ?
Sixth Man π¨ of the Year Award (tie) goes to Brayden Smoot and Cody Reece.
Both of these Juniors were up to the challenge every night π whenever Coach Barnes called their number. Cody finished runner up to Isaiah Easter in the Most improved voting as well.
Defensive Player of the Year :
Jabin Talley – one can add Senior Leadership to the end of this young π¨’s list of contributions !
The beauty of having a Blog versus an online Newspaper π° is you can pick your topics and we are just scratching the surface with our Varsity Boys π¦ coverage !
Last night π on The Hill Alyssa Ervin netted 36 points to lead Carroll County High School to the Three Rivers District Tourney Championship.
The Cavaliers defeated the visiting Buffaloπes 61-43, allowing Head Coach Marc Motley to double down with both Crowns π for the 2023-2024 season.
Shortly after the conclusion of the contest four Cavaliers were honored for their efforts π.
Madison Lyons was voted to the All-District Second team while both Ervin and Katie Lam were voted to the First team.
Coach Motley was named District Coach of the Year and Ervin was named the District Player of the Year.
The term back 2 back refers to a person or team accomplishing the same thing twice in a row. In the case of our 5’11 Senior, it gets a little tricky.
Ervin was named Three Rivers District Volleyball π Player of the Year and now the same for Basketball π so that’s one example of back 2 back but she also was the District Player of the Year in Basketball last season, so there’s another back 2 back!
It might be 10 years down the road before we fully understand the level of play we have been witnessing here the last four years. One thing we do know is that she will lace them up one final time on The Hill next Tuesday evening.
Any further post season games after that will be played at our locations, starting with Virginia Tech.
Craig Worrell and I were comparing notes recently on the Ervin scoring total and just how easily she could be chasing 2,500 right now, instead of 2,000.
The combination of Covid shortening a season and the amount of minutes lost to the fact that CCHS was so far ahead that Coach couldn’t leave her in the game.
This young Lady has put on a show that has lasted four years and we are fortunate that next Tuesday night π we will get to see her take a curtain call !
Floyd County defeated CCHS in overtime earlier in the season in Floyd but its been nothing but joy filling the Cavs lockeroom since that evening.
Kayla Young once again led the attack with a game high 21 points, including 9 of 12 from the free throw line. Natalie Burress added nine points with the highlight being a 5-0 spurt to begin the second quarter that turned a 11-9 deficit into a 14-11 lead.
The Cavaliers never looked back afterwards, coming up with the answer for any run the Buffaloes tried to make.
Thoughts from Coach Nester :
“I’m so proud to be a part of this group, and it has been a privilege to work with them throughout the season.
They have put in work, and it shows. The improvements we have made from the beginning to the end have been leaps and bounds.
This team had something to prove to themselves this year, and I believe they have accomplished that.
They can continue the culture of hard work at Carroll County. And they can make their own mark on this program.
I can’t wait to get started for next season, but for now, go have fun with the next sport. Say hey to Coach Nester for me!’
The reference to the transfer from one Coach Nester to another Coach Nester is for a number of the players that will be heading over to Cavalier Park on Monday, trading their sneakers π for Softball cleats.
The early season match ups with Pulaski County showed the team what they needed to work on and that’s exactly what they did.
