Lady 👩 Cavaliers secure a Team Win, 62-38 over James River Monday night on The Hill

Time to take a run 🏃‍♂️ at a Game story for Allen Worrell.

Seven days after facing James River with just seven players the Lady Cavaliers hosted the Knights in a Three Rivers District contest with a few extra weapons, leading to a 62-38 victory.

Alyssa Ervin led the offense with a game high 25 points, including 12 in the second quarter. The team ended up with a quartet of players with eight points or more and that will prove to be vital once the team reaches the post season.

The more players that the opponent has to game plan for, the less gadget or junk defenses they can throw at Ervin. Take a look inside the numbers and see how the team continues to gain confidence on the offensive side of things. Katie Lam added 14 points on four 3-pointers as the Senior continues her strong play in the number two scoring role.

Sarah Alderman (8 points) looked as comfortable as can be last night in regards to looking for the open shot.

Sophomore Callie Harris recently moved into the starting lineup for Head Coach Marc Motley and she had herself a ball game, much to the delight of her Coach.

” Callie Harris played her rear off for us tonight,” Motley said. ” The number of steals she had and she almost led us in rebounds.”

Harris finished the game with a season high 12 points after nailing a fourth 3-pointer Midway through the fourth quarter on a night that the team finished with 12 made shots from deep.

Caitlin Canada played another strong game for the Knights, finishing up with a team high 21 points. Canada will be the key to the Knights post season run here in the coming weeks.

The entire season has been about the team gaining more and more confidence in each other and in their teammates. Last night was quite possibly the most balanced victory of the season. The lead was at 59-32 late in the fourth quarter before James River closed out the game with a mini flurry.

The team returns to action on Wednesday night at Patrick County in the ultra rare stand alone game against the Cougars. The JV team has played Patrick County twice and the Varsity Boys will wait until Thursday night to head over to Stuart.

The Junior Varsity Girls continued their March towards a spot in the #1-#2 District showdown, beating the Knights 43-22. Kayla Young scored 18 points, including 12 in the deciding second quarter. Carroll County outscored the Knights 17-2 over the seven minute frame to put the contest out of reach. Four other Cavaliers added at least five points as the teams offense is starting to match their smothering defense. Faith Clontz added seven points while Raylee Goins and CC Mitchell each netted six points. Natalie Burress scored her five points in the opening quarter and Laynie-Jo Leonard rounded out the scoring with one point.

Table #10 out of 11 belongs to a Sneaky Quiet Coach Kevin DeHaven!

Kevin DeHaven operates in Stealth mode more often than not. Just quietly trying to nudge things along in the right direction without drawing attention to himself but there when you need him to be. Last night was a perfect example as I was trying to mention to Coach Marc Motley about a story I penned about his team earlier in the day when out of nowhere Coach DeHaven appears with the story pulled up on his cell phone ! Since the early days DeHaven has been our Man 👨 behind the scenes, with vital information and finding a score for us in the Spring when we have all but one on a given night 🌙.

Coach was also one of the first to faithfully send something in about his game that day, whether his Cavaliers team had won or lost.

Another big thing to me was during Baseball ⚾️ and Softball season Coach would find his way across the street to Cavalier Park and catch a few innings of our game. It was always fun to see him out of the corner of my 👁 and acknowledge him and his ball club.

DeHaven also has some really impressive friends ( insert Samantha Reed in here) and a loving and supportive family 👪. The other thing that Coach is ultra quick at is having a Coach Nester story locked 🔒 and loaded. I feel comfortable in saying that we might hear one or two of them on March 23rd!

Coach DeHaven isn’t a Man of many words but is full of action. More folks would know this if it wasn’t for his Stealth mode.

Ladies & Gentlemen, your Table Master at Table #10 is Kevin DeHaven!

Little Cavaliers continue to roll their way to a shot at a District Championship game appearance !

By : Henrietta McHomerson

The Hill – Carroll County moved one step closer to a spot in the Three Rivers District championship game on Monday night, defeating visiting James River by a score of 43-22.

The team defense continues to be something to marvel about from start to finish and the offense continues to grow more confident each time they take the floor. Kayla Young scored 12 of her game high 18 points during the dominant second quarter where the Cavs outscored the Knights 17-2.

The highlight of the second quarter was one possession where the Cavaliers kept the ball in their hands for nine consecutive attempts and then stole the ball right back to create a 10 attempt moment that netted a Laynie-Jo Leonard free throw.

The team continues to hustle for the full 28 minutes and Monday night all five starters scored. Faith Clontz followed Young with seven points while Raylee Goins and CC Mitchell both added six points to the total. Natalie Burress scored all five of her points in the opening minutes of the first quarter and Leonard accounted for the final point.

Head Coach Kayla Nester took the time to share her thoughts on her teams latest effort.

“All I can say is…one more to go! One more district game to seal the deal of regular season district Champs!

These girls are motivated and driven to prove themselves. Everytime they step on the court we get better and we are understanding more and more about this game I’m passionate about. I couldn’t ask for a better group to work with.

Every challenge I give them, they step up and work toward that end goal. Learning new plays, working on ball movement around perimeter, defenses and switching them up depending on games situations… you name it and we are checking things off the list.

Of course we have room for improvement, but I like this start for the future of Carroll County Basketball. “

Thank You Coach Nester!

Congratulations 👏👏👏 to the Junior Varsity Girls 👧 Basketball 🏀 program !

By my count we have four more stories tonight so let’s get to it! Here’s Tonights Column before the Gamers.

Callie Harris is a go getter but I am not sure the young Lady had a choice in the matter. Born to Shelia and Marion Harris, Calle is the third of the Three Harris daughters and both of the older two are lifetime over achievers. When I have been fortunate enough to spend time around the Family 👪 its easy to see that both Natalie and Adrienne are more than happy to throw friendly shade at their Baby Sister.

Last night Callie was running around all over the basketball court. Her defense and rebounding were a sight to see from start to finish. But the first shot attempt from Callie missed its target and there was hesitation on her part to continue to take her next shot. Head Coach Marc Motley continued to shout out encouragement to his Sophomore guard 💂‍♂️, telling her to trust her shot. Pretty sure that most of us heard the encouragement and what followed was Priceless !

Callie netted three points in the first half on a 3-pointer that gave the Cavaliers a 10-4 lead. Rebounds and Steals were aplenty but just the one made Field Goal until something special happened midway through the third period.

Both teams were struggling to score in the early moments of the third quarter. The outcome was still in doubt at the half (32-21) and three minutes in Carroll County still had not scored at James River was back inside of single digits (32-23).

Harris had passed on a couple of good looks before launching a 3-pointer at 4:52 of the third quarter. The shot was released with some hesitation but it found its way 🏡.

Just under two minutes later Harris fired her next attempt with all the confidence of Michael Jordan. The type of shot that you are smiling about the second it leaves her hand ✋. Katie Lam watched those two shots find the bottom of the net and thought “That looks like fun”. Lam hit her fourth 3-pointer just after Harris’s pair and just like that the lead was 46-26. Game over, only the final score was still in doubt.

There would be one more 3-pointer from Harris in the fourth quarter(4:30) but I’m not sure she called Glass before launching that one…..

Harris finished with 12 points, a new career high and even more importantly, moved in the direction of being a player that the opponent has to guard. Teams cannot double and triple Alyssa Ervin as easily if Lam, Sarah Alderman and Callie Harris are all a threat to score.

 Congratulations 👏👏👏 Miss Harris!

Fouls, Get Your Fouls Here :

While Carroll County didn’t have a player foul out, here’s the list of Cavaliers that were on the cusp of doing so.

0:43 (3rd) Ervin whistled for #4

Corrie Delp was whistled for her fourth foul but I can’t find my notes on the time.

5:44 (4) – Madison Lyons picks up her fourth foul.
