What a ride last week turned out to be for Head Coach Marc Motley and our Lady Cavaliers Basketball 🏀 program.

Each of the past few years Coach Motley has sought out the top competitors he could schedule in hopes of getting his team ready for the post season. It was fun to attach a label 🏷 to it as I called it Saturdays with Coach Motley. Last season we played teams in North Carolina, Salem and Lexington, Virginia. Two of those games proved to be post season previews as the opponents were Liberty Christian Academy and Spotswood. Over the Holidays he takes his team out in search of the highest level of competition he can find (this year it was Charleston, SC) in hopes of getting his team prepared for Regional play.

 Saturday morning the team had breakfast together in Hillsville before heading up I-81 to Salem High School to compete once again in the Adam Ward Classic. Once again they were paired up with a talented team, this time it was Fleming High School.

 Fleming (16-4, 7-1 Blue Ridge) slowly pulled away from the Cavaliers on their way to a 70-43 victory. Borrowing a old sports cliché, the final score was not a true representation of the game. Carroll County went into the locker room trailing 31-23 and started the second half much as the did in the first half, playing to an 11-9 spread.

 Trailing 42-32, the Cavaliers(16-3, 8-1 Three Rivers) reached a point where the couldn’t contain the Colonels well balanced attack. Alyssa Ervin netted 31 of the Cavaliers 43 points, including 30 by the end of the third quarter. Katie Lam added nine points while Corrie Delp (2 points) and Kaci Young (1 point) rounded out the scoring for CCHS.

There are a number of folks that believe the sky is falling because Carroll County dropped two basketball games in the same week after dropping just two games over the past two seasons combined. Let’s take a look at the six day span that just concluded for our Cavaliers.

 Monday – the double whammy of having to take a long, cold Bus 🚌 ride to James River High without five of your players, including two of our starters, including the freshly crown 👑ed Top Scorer in the Schools 🏫 history. The seven that were healthy enough to make the trek and wear the uniform gave their Coach everything they had in the 13-point setback. The walking wounded left the gym with their heads held high, but the headline was about how the team just lost their first game during our stay in the Three Rivers District.

Wednesday – Being in the Gym early, it was easy to see that our Girls 👧 were far from healthy. There was no bounce in their step as they warmed up and we were facing the one team that loves to play right at us, Floyd County. The start of that game was painful enough that our crowd was sitting in stunned silence. We didn’t have the energy we needed and quickly fell behind by double digits. The team rested during the halftime break and drank plenty of fluids, came out in the second half and played through the challenges. The Cavaliers earned a hard fought Win, 60-53.

Friday – The game time was 5:30 as it was the opening game of a Varsity double header. Less gap between the end of School and the start of basketball 🏀. Then add back in the night was going to be emotional for everyone as Ervin was set to break the All-Time scoring record. That moment took play well before 6pm but with everything else that was taking place that evening the festivities didn’t take place until 9pm. Roughly 15 hours after the day began.

Saturday – The team gathers for a Group Breakfast, that some kind folks at one of the local restaurants [Hillsville Diner] provided (I 💘 acts of kindness) before taking a Bus 🚌 back up I-81 to Salem High School. They were facing as deep and talented team as there is in our area and I’m relieved they are in a higher classification then us.

Again, their playing well out of your comfort zone time wise in addition to playing without your sizeable fan base, still trying to get healthy and playing your fourth game in six days.

  Another long bus ride and then you add our Madison Lyons catching an elbow to the face early in the contest that kept her from returning to the contest. We have to except the fact that unlike NBA super stars 🌟, Ervin does not get anywhere near the amount of calls she should. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that she is strong enough to play through the contact???

 Everyone had Sunday to try and bounce back and hopefully tonight it will be business as usual when James River drives 🚗 down to The Hill for the rematch.

Special Thank You to Marion & Shelia Harris for assisting me with covering the game while out of State.

 Folks, don’t loose sight of what this group of young Ladies has accomplished in getting to 18-3. This group is not like the teams the past two seasons and its not fair to make that comparison. Let this team have its own identity and trust in the process that Coach Motley uses in preparing for the Long Run 🏃‍♂️. The sky is not falling, it was just a perfect storm of Mother Nature rescheduling games, the Flu running through the majority of the team and facing a level of an opponent that will only make us better.

 When it comes to Girls Basketball our motto is, In Motley we Trust.

 Don’t forget that the JV plays tonight at 5:30

This is the degree that Vickie tries to watch out for me. I will try here in a minute but plug these in.

Really good article
(second half much as “they” did)
(reached a point where “they”)
(Again, “they’re” playing)
{We have to “accept “}
{Folks, don’t “lose”}

Welcome 🙏 to another week ! Great to be back amongst our Cows 🐄, excited about Coach Kayla Nester searching for victory #102 tonight on The Hill !

The Girls 👧 Junior Varsity Basketball 🏀 team is nothing if not considerate. In a few hours they are going to storm the Court to face the James River High School 🏫 Knights in a Three Rivers District showdown.

 We faced the Knights just last week up in Buchanan and now it’s time to finish off the season series here at home 🏡. Kayla Young continues to lead the way offensively but she has plenty of help. The defensive side of the court is a group effort and is full of energy, spots one through five.

 The team is looking to lock in a spot in the District Championship game which involves the top two teams in the league and tonight is the next step 🚶‍♂️ in that quest !

 Going full circle 🔵 with the story, just how Considerate are these young Ladies ? There nice enough that they are willing to let the Varsity Girls 👧 play afterwards 😉.

 Jump ball at 5:30 pm on The Hill.
