12 teams comprise Region 3C :
Abingdon, Bassett, Carroll County, Cave Springs (Roanoke), Christiansburg, Hidden Valley (Roanoke), Lord Botetourt (Daleville), Magna Vista (Ridgeway), Northside (Roanoke), Staunton River (Moneta), Tunstall (Dry Fork) and William Byrd (Vinton).
The sports that CCHS will play in the Region are Baseball, Softball, Boys and Girls Soccer, Boys and Girls Tennis and finally Boy & Girls Track/Field. Each sport has their own tweaks to how the Region is contested and the formula that is used in the seeding process is just this side of NASA math.
Tennis is one of the sports where individual athletes can advance in singles and doubles separate from the team as the top single seed and the top doubles seed from each team have two opportunities to move on to the State level.
Soccer, Baseball and Softball are much more straight forward in regards to Win and advance as a team in a single elimination tournament. Track & Field is more about the individual results but team scores are kept at every level through the State Meet.
The starting point for the Sports is completely different with Soccer being one of the Sports getting a jump start on play here shortly.
Carroll County also has three Junior Varsity teams and two of the sports (Baseball & Softball) hold a one day District Championship between the top two teams and those contests are slated to be played this Friday. Softball will be Carroll County versus Alleghany while Baseball will be between Alleghany and hopefully CCHS.
Looking at the Region – starting with SOFTBALL
The 12 Softball teams compete across five Districts with four teams coming from the Blue Ridge – Staunton River, Lord Botetourt, William Byrd and Northside. Three teams play in the River Ridge – Cave Springs, Christiansburg and Hidden Valley. Another group of three come from the Piedmont – Tunstall, Bassett and Magna Vista. The final two teams are lone wolves with our Cavaliers (3 Rivers) and Abingdon (Mountain 7).
Without trying to guess at the formula that is used we can take a look at the won-loss marks as of this morning to attempt to gauge just where the Lady Cavaliers might fall.
Cave Springs is 11-1 in the River Ridge and 17-3 overall
Staunton River is 8-2 in the Blue Ridge and 17-3 overall
*Carroll County is 7-2 in the Three Rivers and 15-2 overall
Northside is 8-4 in the Blue Ridge and 14-8 overall
_____________________________________________________________
Christiansburg is 8-4 in the River Ridge and 11-8 overall
Bassett is 5-7 in the Piedmont and 11-10 overall
Abingdon is 3-5 in the Mountain Seven and 8-8 overall
The remaining five teams all sit below .500 overall
Notes – Carroll County is 2-0 in the Region with a pair of victories over Bassett and is also 2-0 in games played up a level as they went 2-0 versus Pulaski County (4A).
Carroll County will once again try and play a double header today with visiting Tazewell and will wrap up the regular season Wednesday at Radford. The playing of theses three games will allow the Lady Cavaliers the chance to cement a first round game at home and possibly put them in position to claim a Top 2 spot which gets a team two home games. If / when the Cavaliers would travel the most likely landing spots look like Cave Springs or Staunton River
