Part II of our Table for 10 series at the State Track and Field meet. Today we focus on our Sophomore Track ๐Ÿ‘ฃ phenom Corrie Delp

Lynchburg – There are efforts in recent history that people are willing to write off as an overnight success. The story of Carroll County sophomore Corrie Delp is anything but that as we are in year five of her track career in the CCHS system despite the fact Delp is only in the 10th grade.

The constants in her efforts are Head Coach Shawn Montgomery and the Assistant Coach that has a duel role as Jon Delp is both her mentor and her father. The trio were center stage at Liberty University on Saturday as Delp competed in her signature event, the Long Jump for the second straight season.

Delp was one of 41 entries in the Class 3 field, each with the hopes of earning a spot in the Finals. A scratch in her attempt left her with two more jumps and battling nagging injuries , Delp failed to earn a spot in the finals.

The final effort of the season coming up short had minimal impact on the disposition of Delp.

” Today was exciting and I was happy to be there at the highest level in the State,” Delp said. ” I love competing in Track and Field and I would be lost without my Dad by my side.”

Part of the difference between her Freshman season and her Sophomore year is that Delp competed at the Varsity level for both Cindy Edwards in Volleyball and Marc Motley in Basketball prior to heading outdoors in the Spring.

Everyone that makes the jump from Junior Varsity to Varsity will admit to the difference in how fast everything moves and the raised expectations of the coaches they play for.

Edwards takes the time to notice the off the court side of Delp in addition to her athletic ability.

” Corrie Delp is another 3 sport athlete, who is very athletic, so gifted she is quick and is blessed with a great determination to get better, ” said Edwards. ” I’m most impressed when I watch her with her little sister who has needs and you can truly see the love she has for her, she is patient, kind and loving with her.”

Delp is now halfway to every Track athlete in the Commonwealth goal of competing well enough to make it to State every time possible.

Head Coach Montgomery shared his thoughts on the efforts he receives every day from his long time team member.

” Corrie is a natural talent that is always looking to improve”, said Montgomery. ” She excels at anything she attempts to do once we get outside and start competing.”

The number five pops up all over the place in the Montgomery and Delp connection. The trio are all in their fifth season together and Corrie is the middle of the five Delp daughters.

Also trackside but on the outside of the ropes is the other proud parent, Vanetta Delp.

” I am so proud of Corrie’s attitude after she qualified for State once again, even though she knew some of the girls would probably out jump her,” Vanetta Delp said. ” She just considered it an honor to get to compete at the highest level.”

Many Carroll County High School athletes compete for their parents, including Montgomery and his daughter, Delp and his daughter, Greg Talley and his Son, Kris Richardson and his son are a few of the examples and Delp wouldn’t have her experience to be any other way. Being split between Father and Coach seems to fit Jon Delp as well as Corrie.

” Corrie did not have the day that we would have hoped,” Jon Delp said. ” The thing is Corrie and I, as her father and her coach, learn from each contest. We takes notes, we evaluate and try to get better each meet. She will be back next year with a fresh perspective and that desire to improve upon this season, just as she did this year from last. Corrie improved on her personal best (PB) from last year and I know that she will give it her best the next two years.”

Back at the LU Track ๐Ÿ‘ฃ for Corrie Delp’s Day in the Sun ๐ŸŒž

The National Anthem was just played at 11:50 am, marking the switch from the morning session to the afternoon session. This means our Corrie Delp is inching closer to her first of three attempts at the Long Jump!

Mom and Dad ๐Ÿ‘จ, who is one of her Coaches are here with us as is Head Coach Shawn Montgomery. Linda is heading out with Corrie to be able to capture Delp in action ๐ŸŽฌ.

Corrie is the middle of five Delp daughters and many of them have joined Dad ๐Ÿ‘จ in track ๐Ÿ‘ฃ at CCHS.

Blue Ridge timing.com is the site for all results from today’s events.

Our super Sophomore is the only one of our multi sport stars ๐ŸŒŸ that has track as her main sport. The events that Delp competes in outside of the Long Jump are the 100, 200 and relays.

The journey to Lynchburg for Delp started back in the sixth grade. Back then it was longer distances, cross country events but the switch happened rather quickly. Rather quickly is how Delp does everything!

The Long Jump event came into play back in her Middle School ๐Ÿซ days. Delp is competing in the State Long Jump event for the second consecutive year.

We are inching closer to her first attempt ! Stay tuned…

Greetings from The Grand Hotel ๐Ÿจ in Historic Downtown Lynchburg – its State Track ๐Ÿ‘ฃand Field Day !

The lobby is rather quiet at the moment but late last night ๐ŸŒ™ and early this morning ๐ŸŒ„ it was full of two things, Student Athletes and Dreams !

I am sure that there are a number of Hotels scattered throughout the city of Lynchburg that have / had similar scenes ahead of the Class 3 and Class 4 event about to get underway shortly.

It’s 11am now and back on The Hill people are gathering to send off our qualifiers and I hope ๐Ÿ™ that its a great turnout. Hoping this for both the Coaches and the Athletes.

Shawn Montgomery and Jon Delp are a hard working duo far removed from the spotlight on most days. Today is their day and I flash back to our conversation last year when we sent two Cavaliers to the State Meet (Corrie Delp and Elijah Smith). Coach said to me that two this year could lead to four next year.

It turned out that it did indeed become four but sadly two of the four will not be able to make the Trek.

Davis Reitzel took up the 300 Hurdles recently and did it in such a manner that he punched his ticket ๐ŸŽŸ to Lynchburg at the Regional meet last week. Reitzel is quite possibly the most well rounded Athlete on The Hill and its a shame that folks up here won’t be able to see him on the Grand Stage but he is currently on Vacation with his Family over in Europe.

Alyssa Ervin, like Reitzel is another multi talented Athlete and also picked up a track hobby this Spring. Her event that qualified for State was the High Jump. It was disappointing to hear that a recent injury will keep her away from Lynchburg today. When I heard about this my first thought was I hope it didn’t happen while she was competing in Track and I was relieved to hear it was in the Gym.

That covers the duo that are not currently on the 2+ hour commute to LU. Now we can turn on focus to the pair that are heading this way.

Brayden Smoot is another 3-Sport Athlete that wears our colors all year long. Football, Basketball and Track ๐Ÿ‘ฃ and the young man excells in all of them.

Last season Smoot missed making the trek by the equivalent of an eye lash so it was exciting for me to hear about the day he punched his ticket ๐ŸŽŸ earlier this spring.

Coach Montgomery just notified me that his attempt to make the Finals has been moved from 3:40 back to 4:10 today. The preliminary races ๐Ÿ will set the field for the Class 3 Finals to be held tomorrow.

That leaves our Super Soph, Corrie Delp. Corrie is heading here for the second consecutive year and will be competing in the Long Jump once again.

Delp is the one of this foursome that might be a Track athlete that plays other sports in her down time. Volleyball ๐Ÿ and Basketball ๐Ÿ€, both at the Varsity level this season and she would also star ๐ŸŒŸ on our Gymnastics team if we had one. Back Flips are another one of her many talents.

It was a treat to play a small role with the Track ๐Ÿ‘ฃ and Field teams this season by lending my voice to the home events. It will be an honor to greet these folks up here in a bit !

Pretty sure that Shawn Montgomery is the hardest working man in all of showbiz !

Best of Luck this weekend !
