Carroll County Volleyball 🏐 uses balanced attack in 3-0 sweep over host Floyd County

Floyd – Carroll County Head Coach Cindy Edwards went into the Three Rivers District match at Floyd County understanding that her team was in the middle of a stretch where her team would play six matches inside of ten days. Thursday night the Lady πŸ‘© Cavaliers played with a number of new look lineups while sweeping Floyd County 3-0 (25- 20, 25-11, 25-21).

The victory moves CCHS to 3-1 in the Three Rivers District (5-4 overall) with matches against Radford and Patrick County still to be played in the first half of league play.

Faith Nicholson was the first Lady Cavalier to capitalize on extended floor play as the Sophomore tallied two Kills and three Aces inside of the first 10 points scored in the match.

Laiken Burnett finished the contest with a match high 19 assists and the Junior did a great job of creating opportunities for a number of different attackers from start to finish.

” I thought it was a great chance to play some kids that aren’t on there a lot,” said Coach Cindy Edwards.” We were able to get them some much needed match experience.”

Behind the early burst from Nicholson and the money πŸ’° in the bank 🏦 play of lone Senior Aza Petty, the team led 10-4 . CCHS pushed it out to 16-7 before the home team was able to settle down.

Floyd County found a bit of a Groove and quickly turned a 20-10 deficit into a 24-20 score. Petty gathered a perfect set from Burnett and finally ended the opener 25-20.

FCHS continued their strong play, jumping out to leads of 4-0 and 7-5 in the second set. Carroll County then put together their most impressive run of the season, outscoring the Lady Buffaloes 20-4 the rest of the set.

Ali Wright led the charge by dominating from the service line. The Sophomore collected three Aces and a service winner during a push that made it 11-7. Floyd County scored a point and then a Kill from Alyssa Lawson sent Callie Harris to the service line.

Harris introduced a new serve that led to three straight Aces as the home team had no answer for it. Brooke Webb took center stage next as she strung together some of her six kills on the night. Petty closed out the set at 25-11 with one of her four Aces.

Carroll County had captured Matches with 2 wins(Jamboree) 4 wins and 5 wins and the team was looking at its first with 3 wins.

When Sophomore Heidi Painter recorded her initial Kill of the season it energized the bench and gave CCHS a 7-2 lead in the potential close out set. Once the lead reached 10-2 it appeared the night was all but over.

Burnett scored a 2-ball Kill to make it 18-9 but surprisingly both the home team and the home crowd raised their game substantially. Floyd County trimmed the lead down to 24-21 before Petty completed the Close Out Hat Trick, this time with the final of her eight kills.

Carroll County will return to action 🎬 this Saturday afternoon by playing over at Gate City. The Blue Devils have six State Championships Trophies in their display case but this years team has struggled out of the gate.

Junior Varsity plays at 1:00 pm and Varsity will begin shortly after 2pm on Saturday.

Thursday night included all three Volleyball squads in action. In the opening match, Floyd County captured the Middle School battle, 2-0 (25-13, 25-20). The Cavaliers closed the gap in the second set to 22-20 before the Buffaloes closed out the match.

Carroll County won the first set of the Junior Varsity match by turning a 20-16 deficit into a 25-21 victory. The 9-1 run was the highlight of the night for the team.

Floyd County opened the second set on a 10-2 run on their way to a 25-11 victory to force a winner take all final set.

CCHS closed to within 9-8 before the home team strung together six points to close out the match. The JV squad played with a great deal of confidence throughout their evening as the team continues to grow under Head Coach Jason Petty.

With all of the Volleyball 🏐 covered, let’s sneak in some WNBA news!

The WNBA played its 39th game on its 40 game schedule Tuesday night and went along way in straightening out the Playoff picture.

Both Kelsey Plum and Aja Wilson netted 21 points in the Las Vegas Aces clutch victory at Seattle. The Aces will look to make a run at their 3-peat as the number four seed and Seattle will finish up in the number five slot.

Bre Stewart and her New York Liberty πŸ—½claimed the Top Spot by picking up victory #32 (32-7). Minnesota lands at #2 (30-9) after winning the West.

Connecticut sits at 27-12 after dropping a Heartbreaker at home to Minnesota 78-76. One game back is the 2-time defending Champs πŸ†and my favorite, the Aces.

The wild card in this equation is without a doubt, Caitlin Clark and her Indiana Fever. Indiana sits at 20-19 and the #6 seed that nobody wants to face.

A heavily seasoned team, the Phoenix Mercury currently sit at #7 with a record of 19-20 while its a 3 team race for the eighth and final playoff berth with Atlanta holding a one game lead over both Chicago and Washington.

All three teams will close out their regular season by facing one of the teams already in the playoffs.

Both Dallas and Los Angeles have been eliminated and are favorites to land Paige B from UCONN in the draft.

Plum and Vegas close out at home 🏑 by hosting Dallas after Wilson became the first player in the History of the WNBA to break 1,000 points in a single season. The team has won four straight and eight of their last ten to position themselves well for a run πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ at a Three Peat !

It’s been a terrific season played out in front of record breaking crowds and even included an extended break for the Paris Olympics. The regular season wraps up Thursday night πŸŒ™ and then its off to the postseason for eight of the 12 teams ! It promises to be Must See TV πŸ“Ί…..

Best 2 of 3 are set to begin on September 22nd and after the first round it becomes Best 3 out of 5 until the end.

Trying to capture a piece of Cavalier History, Take 2 ! Might need Take 3??

The sky here in Laurel Fork doesn’t look promising now at 11:15 am but if there’s an upside its the fact that nothing is currently falling from it.

We will attempt again today to host a moment that I think will stand the test of time. Carroll County Softball is set to host Radford at 5:00 pm (Junior Varsity) and at roughly 6:45 its our hope to have the four Student Athletes set to graduate πŸŽ“ after achieving remarkable CCHS career records.

To graduate with a School Record 🏫 one must be capable of playing Varsity as a Freshman to have a fighting chance. Alyssa Ervin, Jabin Talley, Emma Leath and Ashlyn Newman each checked that box.

Then you have to excel at your trade pretty much from start to finish during your time on The Hill. Once again, check, check, check and check.

Ervin finished her career with 2,100+ points. The 5’11 point forward didn’t just sneak across the finish line, she took the record and possibly hid it for a generation or two. The next stop is Elon University as she continues her basketball πŸ€ career.

The same Mother Nature that is trying to derail our efforts again today is keeping Newman from creating anormus space with her career number. The Battling Ben Tickles are set to lose out on three regular season games due to weather and when you have collected so many Hat πŸ‘’ Tricks that they don’t all fit in your closet anymore….

Newman will get at least two more opportunities to add to her record as the team plays at Patrick County on Monday and are set to open regional play a few days later. Newman managed to earn her Associates degree from Wytheville Community College in her spare time and will be heading to Liberty University shortly after graduating CCHS.

The next member of our Fab Four is Tennis 🎾 player Jabin Talley. Talley has been playing his sport as long as he has been able to grip a racket. His record number of wins continues to rise, at least on days they are fortunate enough to get a match in. The CCHS team most effected by the weather this Spring has been tennis.

Talley plays #1 singles and #1 doubles alongside junior Ethan Richardson. The duo has won at an alarming rate and have hopes of continuing for a few more weeks as they prepare for their post season.

Talley will be heading over to Southwest Virginia Community College in the fall as the first Cavalier to play tennis 🎾 at the next level.

Rounding out or group of hard working young people is Emma Leath. Leath is wrapping up her fourth and final season in the pitching circle πŸ”΅ for Coach Nester and just recently passed Sydney Nester on the career Wins list. Our Greg Maddux of softball is trying to cross the finish line on the other career mark of Nester’s as she is now 3 from tying and four away from breaking the strike out mark.

Leath is set to head down to Surry Community College this fall but she also has some unfinished business here on The Hill.

My goal has been to gather the group together, along with their parents, for a group bow πŸ™‡β€β™‚οΈ and the photo πŸ“· op of a lifetime β™₯.

Some of these four (or five) records might fall someday but its safe to say it won’t happen all in the same school year.

While typing this story out I have been notified by Coach Nester that the Radford game has been pushed again.

We will now have to choose between Thursday (James River) and Friday (Radford) for attempt #3.

FRIDAY at 6:20 pm !!!

Shorthanded Carroll County fends off visiting Honaker, 2-0

The Hill – Head Coach Ben Tickle welcomed back Breanna Shumate from a recent injury and the junior played a key role in helping Carroll County hold off Honaker, 2-0 in a Non-District Soccer game Wednesday night.

Shumate found Ashlyn Newman with a touch pass Midway through the first half and the scoring phenom found the back of the net with 18:01 remaining on the clock.

The early goal would prove to be the game winner as keeper Alexis Sheffey and Tickle’s last line of defense proved up to the task for the full 80 minutes.

The team was playing without three regulars in the lineup which limited the substitute options but the rookie Head Coach pushed all the right buttons and was aided by the two water breaks, one in each half.

The Lady Tigers play a slightly more physical game and that helped them keep the Carroll County offense in check but they were not able to control the ball on the offensive end long enough to find the back of the net. When they did have a good look, Sheffey day friends came up with the answer.

Carroll County doubled their lead just over five minutes into the second half with sophomore Callie Harris finding Newman for her second goal of the contest. The second goal proved to be the final one of the match as the two teams played the final 34:25 to a scoreless draw.

CCHS improved to a sparkling 5-1 at Tommy Thompson Field on the season with the lone setback coming at the hands of Radford in overtime. The club will need to make up home matches against both Glenvar and Alleghany.

Savannah Swecker and Sarah Alderman were away from the team yesterday but will be returning while Riley Hawks is out with an injury.

Honaker 0 0 – 0

Carroll Co 1 1 – 2

From Coach Tickle –

The Lady CAVS had another solid defensive performance. The defense is led by Karmen Smith, Laurel Sutphin, Bre Shumate, Alexis Sheffey at goal, and Harleigh Riggins at the six. Yesterday, we were without Sarah Alderman, but we were pleasantly surprised with the play of Jackie Arellano who filled in on the back line. Offensively, Ashlyn Newman found the back of the net two more times off two great assists. Bre Shumate played up and made a great pass over their line to set up the first goal, and Callie Harris sent a dime to the center setting up the second goal!
