Vickey Ritchie wears many a Hats πŸ‘’ in her efforts to bring inclusion to our Area 9 Special Olympics Basketball πŸ€ teams.

Saturday morning πŸŒ„ the Bus 🚌 left Hillsville Elementary School at 8:30 am. With The Hill in the rear view mirror, Vickey Ritchie turned her focus to the new adventure awaiting her Cavaliers and Sure Shots basketball teams.

The folks who are in charge of the Special Olympics event held each year had extended a first time invitation to Ritchie and our group and the date πŸ“… was added to the calendar. Then the research and planning process began because Coach Vickey is also the Event Coordinator, Athletic Director and doesn’t leave anything to chance. When a person takes on a roll with the level of responsibility that being in charge brings, one wants to control EVERY controllable possible.

The Map within the Map

Virginia Milatary Institute is located in picturesque Lexington, Virginia. The area is home to three colleges in VMI, Washington and Lee & Southern Virginia University. The VMI campus is historic and spread out.

VMI

The festivities began at Marshall Hall and it was well planned, capped by a kickoff and Pep Rally, highlighted by an Olympic torch πŸ”¦ ceremony.

Carrying the Torch

Following the event kickoff, it was time to follow the Keydets across the Campus to the Hall where the actual contests were to be played. Both the Cavaliers and the Sure Shots were guaranteed two games apiece across the afternoon, so endurance has to be part of the thought process as well

Trying to guage which Athletes would enjoy the trek across the Campus and which ones would be exhausted from the experience. The group headed out, part of them on foot with the Keydets and the remaining ones on the School Bus 🚌.

The reason why getting the team from Point A to Point B is a relevant to the story of the day is that is magnifies the enormous planning that goes into every day that Vickey Ritchie takes her group on their next adventure.

A Day in the Life

Basketball πŸ€ games were played from 1:00 pm until 4:45. Both of our teams played 5 on 5 Full Court while others played 3 on 3 Half Court and even more participants enjoyed the Skills Events.

Moe, the VMI Mascot, was the life of the party πŸ₯³, from start to finish. Moe even survived the Bear Hug of the Day from one of our Athletes.

Following the final game of the afternoon, a few minutes were set aside for the Athletes to remove their shoes πŸ‘ž and participate in a dance πŸ’ƒ, something that was perfectly placed to fill the gap until the 5:00 dinner 🍽 at the third and final location.

After a fun filled meal, our Athletes boarded the Bus 🚌 for the trip back to The Hill. Roughly twelve hours from start to finish, by the time everyone unloaded their bags πŸŽ’ back at Hillsville Elementary. The Athletes left the School with their new Medals πŸ… but more importantly, a treasure chest full of memories after their latest day spent with their Teammates, Famalies and the Lady πŸ‘© that puts the ” Special ” in our Special Olympics, Vickey Ritchie.

Thank You to the four playing partners that gave up their Saturday to provide Security and Love for each of the Athletes. Keaton, Zeke, DJ and Dr. Dave.

Thank You to our hosts at VMI and the Special Olympics. They combined to create an atmosphere that would produce lasting memories. Trying to incorporate new guests to an event of this size is more of a challenge than most people could appreciate.

Thank you to every family member who made themselves available πŸ™ for a brand new adventure. It made the day everything it could be.

Thank you to the Bus Driver Roger ( and his wife) that always answers the call. The lunch that was provided was a huge asset for our Group.

” Our bus load of folks tremendously enjoyed the meal at the mess Hall, and they had a ball on the way back home,” said Ritchie. ”  They all had an absolute ball even, I think what it comes down to is that they all knew that they did their absolute best.”

Cavaliers win the final game over the Sure Shots, 28-22.
Meeting of the Minds

It was fitting that the day ended with Carroll County playing against Carroll County. We controlled the narrative and the focus was 1000% about inclusion. It also provided an opportunity for a coaching match-up that rivaled Geno versus Dawn in the just completed Women’s Basketball πŸ€ National Championship Game. But no, not really.

It was just one of the most impressive people that I know coaching against a Big Fan of hers. And a kangaroo, you can’t forget the Kangaroo !

Slightly different approach to this story as it will be up to Allen & Vickey if they want to add to it and run with it past it appearing on our site.

Some details about the day will be expanded on if that’s the case. Such as who provided the SandwichesπŸ₯ͺ and the full name of the Bus 🚌 Driver.

Vickey Ritchie is a Special, Special Lady πŸ‘© that gives at a level that is off the charts. Somewhere she owns a Hulk Statue to prove it !

Thank You Ma’am, for taking a chance by going to Lexington !

Hanging out = Helping out in whatever manner possible !

The Final Fours are set now with 7 #1’s βž• 1 1A

Texas and Connecticut claimed the two remaining tickets 🎟 to Tampa last night πŸŒ™ and now we await the Semi-final contests this weekend.

Southern California versus Connecticut in the Regional Final was quite possibly the most anticipated game in either bracket and it was played last night. But sadly it took place with Ju Ju recovering from surgery. UCONN coasted to a double digit victory over the Trojans for the final spot.

Texas, UCLA , UCONN , and South Carolina will be on display Friday night in Tampa. South Carolina – Texas will be the opener, like the Men one fame will be an All-SEC tilt while UCONN faces UCLA in the nightcap.

Over in San Antonio, Auburn and Florida will open the show on Saturday evening with Duke versus Houston in the second game.

Both brackets guarantee that we will have a National Championship game between the SEC and the Field.

Duke and Florida were the last two Mens schools 🏫 to win Back 2 Back titles before Connecticut did it last year.

South Carolina will be looking to repeat on the Ladies side.

For three days now, the Country will have to wait for the action 🎬 but something tells me that the final six games will be worth it !

There’s something about Chalk on the Riverwalk as we now have a second ever gathering of #1 seeds heading to the Lone Star 🌟 State… Could have the same down in Tampa for the Women…

NCAA Men’s Basketball πŸ€

There had only one previous time that all four #1 seeds advanced to the Men’s Final Four and back in 2008 the destination also happened to be down in San Antonio, Texas.

1,1,1,1

Yesterday, both Houston and Auburn joined Florida and Duke by punching their tickets 🎟 down to the city made famous by the Alamo and its Riverwalk.

The Gators needed a wild 18-4 closeout against Texas Tech to get there while the other three had slightly easier final steps πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ to secure their trips.

The first two #1 seeds on the Ladies side have already booked travel down to their Final Four in Tampa and later today both Texas and Southern California will attempt to make it a perfect 8 for 8. Ju Ju being out of the lineup will make it a bit tougher for the Trojans to get past Geno and UCONN but one cannot rule it out.

Texas will be represented either way as Texas faces Texas Christian ✝️ in the other game. Birmingham and Spokane are the sites tonight.

Each year a story comes out about the 1972 Miami Dolphins 🐬 opening a bottle of Champagne 🍾 when the final unbeaten team finally loses its first game. Somewhere the folks from the Big East are celebrating the fact that they are still the only conference in the history of the NCAA to send three teams to the same Final Four.

Much has been written about the record 14 bids received by the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and the league had one team in each of the four Elite Eight games, leaving a chance at an All-SEC Final Four. Houston and Duke saved Basketball πŸ€ for the rest of us by preventing that. Nobody is happier than the folks from the Big East!

If there’s a team to pull for tonight and then in Tampa, give some thought to Geno and Paige. Yes, Geno only trails John Wooden on the list of Natty’s collected, the Huskies legend hasn’t won one since Stewie strung together her four straight.

Geno

One final Congratulations πŸ‘ to Kara Lawson and the Duke University Blue Devils. Their season ended yesterday afternoon when the 3-pointer for the win over South Carolina missed its mark.

The Gamecocks grabbed the misfire and then added two late free throws in the 54-50 outcome.

Two games that should prove to be entertaining tonight starting at 7pm with UT – TCU and then 9pm with USC – UCONN..

Starting out Saturday with a quick look-see πŸ‘€ at the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Basketball πŸ€ Tournaments

Friday night πŸŒ™ brings the Ladies down to 12 teams, with four games set to be played on Saturday to reduce the number to the Elite Eight.

Teams already in the Elite Eight :

#1 South Carolina vs #2 Duke University

#1 UCLA versus #3 LSU after the Tigers πŸ… closed out  #2 NC State 10-0 to beat the 🐺pack.

Saturday  brings us :

#2 TCU versus #3 Notre Dame

#1 Texas versus #5 Tennessee

#2 Connecticut versus #3 Oklahoma

#1 Southern California versus #5 K-State

_____________________________________

Men’s Basketball πŸ€ :

#1 Florida versus #3 Texas Tech

#1 Duke University vs #2 Alabama

#1 Auburn versus #2 Michigan State

#1 Houston versus #2 Tennessee

This leaves the S.E.C with the possibility of a clean sweep of the Final Four.

A great deal of Chalk left on both sides, proving that the Committees were locked πŸ”’in with their seedings.

Duke and UNC are set to meet up down in Birmingham on Friday afternoon in the Sweet 16! If only Travis Osborne could let us use his Corporate Jet…

Kinda funny that two schools 🏫 separated by roughly 9 miles have to travel down to Birmingham to play against one another. But that will be the case when the Blue Devils and Tar Heels meet on Friday at 2:30 pm.

The winner πŸ†moves on to face South Carolina on Sunday, baring an upset of the Gamecocks. Maybe we can petition to have the starting five from both the Heels and the Devils face USC???

Both North Carolina State and Notre Dame also advanced, giving our league four teams. The SEC ended up with six Women’s teams to go with their seven Men’s teams .

The good news is that the games should improve dramatically in regards to the level of competitive. All four 1’s, 2’s and 3’s made it, along with two fours and two fives.

2:30 on Friday afternoon!
