Let’s call this one, 24 Hours with Forrest Johnson and Gesnan Mejia! It started with a ceremony on Wednesday and ended with a 5-1 victory over Patrick County High on Thursday.

Gustavo Munoz Memorial moment on Wednesday

This adventure began shortly before 7 p.m. on Wednesday and ended right 24 hours later at 6:45 pm. when the lead official whistled to end the match versus Patrick County.

The Cavaliers capped off the 24-hour window πŸͺŸ with a convincing 5 – 1 victory over the Cougars, with multiple players finding the back of the net. Hess Mejia was in the press box for the 2-day victory, and the impressive young man added plenty of flavor and insight on both days. Mejia will be back on the pitch on Monday night when Glenvar hosts the Cavaliers.

The ceremony and the first 23 : 16 took place on Wednesday evening, but at 7:18 p.m., the match was postponed by lightning 🌩. Roughly one hour later, the decision was made to head home and start things back up at 5:30 on Thursday afternoon.

Carroll County led 1-0 (Aiden Puckett goal) when the game was halted, and that remained the score until 37 : 52 of the second half. Bradsel Martinez put the biscuit in the basket 🧺 after the Cavs were awarded their second penalty kick of the afternoon.

Ten minutes later, Cavs keeper Fernando Ruiz made the ultimate play in Soccer when he guessed correctly and stopped a PK by Solomen Reeder, protecting the 2-0 lead.

At 21: 33, Glenn Stovall did manage to get one past Ruiz to cut βœ‚οΈ the lead in half, but the Cavaliers responded by throwing it into overdrive for the final 20  minutes.

The defense tightened, and the offense found another gear βš™οΈ. At 12:04, Landon Jordan found a streaking Judah Collins, and in a flash, it was 3-1. Collins enjoyed the moment by doing a quick ” dab ” towards his bench.

The Cavaliers collected a few cards as if they were trying to open a Hallmark shop, but fortunately, they were all just yellow in color and came from the emotions of the match.

Speaking of emotions, the crowd loved it when Samuel Ibarra Casmiro buried a PK at 5:34 ! The lead was now at 4-1, but the Cavs weren’t finished yet. Evan (E.J.) Conner had been booming πŸ’₯ the soccer ⚽️ ball around with his powerful leg 🦡 and he set up for an out of bounds direct kick from the 35-yard line.

Both Gesnan and I told Lin right before the effort that she was going to enjoy this kick! 35 yards later, Conner had indeed bent it like Beckham, and the score was 5-1, and the celebration could begin.

The day began with a touching tribute, and 24 hours later, it ended with a celebration !

Can’t end without adding that Jeremy Puckett and his JV Cavaliers won 2-0 over Patrick just beforehand.

Playoffs, we’re talking Playoffs will go down in history as one of the greatest sound bites in sports history – yes, Jim Mora, here in Beckley, we are going to talk Playoffs for our Golden Bears πŸ»

Jim Mora in the moment back in the Day !

West Virginia Tech University Baseball ⚾️ competes in a rather top-heavy River States Conference, and we head into the series today versus Rio Grande with a league mark of just 2-13.

The postseason league tournament takes place in Ohio at the end of the season, and the top six teams make the guest list.

At the top of this post, you see πŸ‘€ the lowere portion of the league standings with four weekend series left (12 games). The upside for us is that we are still in this because we have completed our version of murders row.

Rio Grande went 15 – 5 in non-conference play and is well coached. They will be looking at this weekend in the exact same manner, so we should have a great weekend of baseball ⚾️ starting at 3 pm today over at Linda K Epling Stadium 🏟.

If I had an editing staff, I could trim this down to where it would que up at the right spot, but I don’t, so it won’t. If you get past the first 15 seconds, it’s Jim Mora as only Jim Mora could be !

Yes, it’s game day here in Beckley, and we are indeed talking about the playoffs !

Next up : Junior Varsity Softball and the long and winding road that has finally reached its end.

Last night, our JV Cavaliers played a game over in Stuart against a talented Cougars squad and dropped a 10-1 decision.

Velvet Leonard captured the coaches and the team in their meeting after the game, and Mr DeHaven passed along the final score.

99 times out of 100, I would leave it at that because nobody is required to discuss a game with me after it’s played, but this one is the exception, and I will tell you why.

These ladies and their coaches have had a crazy four day stretch, and there is no way they can not be flat worn out from it.

On Monday afternoon, the team was slated to travel to Tazewell for a scheduled double header and then have a day off before playing again. Instead, the trip over to Tazewell had to be pushed back one day due to circumstances on our end, and the trip was made on Tuesday night.

Terry Warf and Alec Horton coached them up to a victory that night, and Dave Quesenberry drove the bus back to The Hill.

Fast forward to Wednesday now, and Chilhowie High School comes to town to challenge our Nine to a contest.

We dropped that decision, but it’s worth noting πŸ“ that the game went on for over two hours.

Then, on Day 3, our kiddos woke up and went to school 🏫 and boarded another bus 🚌 and headed over to Stuart, Virginia, to play for a third straight day.

So, while I don’t know everything about what happened with the 10-1 setback or anything for that matter, I know that I’m proud of them for making it to the finish line of a long stretch.

Their parents should give themselves a pat on the back because they were there as well !

Varsity Softball falls 13 -6 at Patrick County on Thursday night in a Three Rivers District tilt. JV dropped a 10-1 decision in the opener as both teams concluded a busy, busy stretch ahead of spring break.

Stuart – Carroll County High School entered the bottom of the third inning at Patrick County Thursday night, leading the Cougars 2-1 but sadly struggled mightily to record the third out in the bottom of the frame, leading to a 13-6 setback.

The Lady Cavaliers did right the ship 🚒 across the final four innings, outscoring their host 4-3, but the damage was done.

The tale of the tape shows very, very similar stats to previous setbacks at home to Pulaski County and on the road Wednesday at Chilhowie. Carroll County swung the bats just as well once again with the final totals there being 14-13 in favor of the Lady Cougars. The defensive side of things was equal with both sides committing just two misques, but the nine spot sticks out like a sore thumb.

It was eight versus Pulaski, four against the Warriors, and the connection between both of those games was it happened in the first inning. Thursday night, it wasn’t until the home of the third inning.

Brooke Webb continues to swing a hot πŸ”₯ bat as the Senior led the way by going 3 of 4 and picking up the lone extra base hit with a double. Twice Webb was able to circle the bases and touch home plate after her hit.

Holly Miller was productive from the leadoff spot, finishing 2 of 4 and reaching a third time on a walk. The Senior scored twice and picked up an RBI along the way. Addie Greene and Laiken Burnett joined Webb and Miller in the multiple hit club by picking up two hits each.

Junior catcher Natalie Burress led the team with two RBI.

Nineteen runners reached base for Carroll County across the seven innings, and a similar number did for Patrick County, but once again, it came down to the ability to bunch them together to create one big inning.

Eight different Lady Cavaliers finished up with a base hit, and the team only struck out five times, so the focus on being aggressive at the plate is clearly working.

The good news for the team is that spring break starts shortly, and with the rescheduling of the contest with Glenvar, the team will have time to reboot after a short break.

To summarize the past two days, we will use a two liter bottle of your favorite soda. You βž—οΈ pop into nine glasses, and every player has some, but when it’s time to pour the drink back into the jug, we are struggling to do it. Every Cavalier is swinging the bat well and doing what Coach Nester is asking them to do at the plate, but we just can’t make the big inning magic happen.

Thursday night, the Cougars did it one time, and it decided the game because quick math says 13-9=4, and we are describing a 6-4 victory.

These types of back to back losses are more difficult than most because the team was doing their job both times βž–οΈ the fact that the opponent managed to collect ” that big hit ” which proved to be the difference between a victory and a setback against talented teams.

Welcome πŸ™ to Good Friday, and here is the Morning πŸŒ„ Brew for this glorious day ! Big 🍎, Golden Bears 🐻 Baseball and chasing stories from Thursday night is the agenda for the day.

The scoreboard is now complete from last night as Mr DeHaven circled back and helped me fill in the blanks!

He described the varsity baseball game as a heck of a battle.

The Boys Varsity Soccer was a spirited match for sure.

Varsity Softball had one harsh inning that they couldn’t overcome.

We have two stories already – JV Baseball and Varsity Track and Field.

There will be at least two expanded stories and possibly more (Softball and Boys Soccer ), depending upon the information that makes it my way as the day plays out.

Here in Beckley, we will be hosting Rio Grande in a normal three game weekend set with one game today and two tomorrow.

New York, New York continues to play out for the Chorus, and I’m sure that we will hear from Marion at some point.

Speaking πŸ”Š of Marion, right before the lightning 🌩 broke out at Soccer on Wednesday evening, he shared some wonderful news about Natalie Harris and the E & H LaCrosse team !

First ever SAC win!!!

Congratulations to the Lady. Wasps for their victory in a back and forth affair over Mars Hill !

Note πŸ“ to our email πŸ“§ subscribers – late last night πŸŒ™ you might have received a shell version of this story as I was framing it up. Apologies for that one as I bumped my phone while I was building the frame.

It’s Good Friday and a great day to be alive !

Have a Blessed Day πŸ™Œ!
