The Hill – Raylee Goins led the short handed Lady Cavaliers with 16 points as Carroll County( 3-8, 2-3 ) held off visiting Martinsville 50 – 43 Tuesday night.
Veteran Head Coach Howard Mayo has won more basketball games than most have even coached but not sure how many of his W’s came with just six available players in his huddle ?
Both Laynie-Jo Leonard and Madison Coleman joined the list of players who were unavailable for the District game, prompting Mayo to call up Hayden Heflin from the Junior Varsity squad to give him a little breathing room on the bench.
Goins continues to grow in her efforts on the offensive end. The Sophomore scored eight of her points in the second quarter, keeping Carroll County within reach of the Bulldogs (7-8). The guard mixed in shots from deep and perfection from the free throw line to lead the way and the improved shooting proved to be contagious.
Sophomore CC Mitchell connected from deep three times in the opening half and finished up with 15 points on the night. Her effort also included going 2 of 2 from the free throw line down the stretch.
The team has been showing a great deal of improvement over the past few games with the two main flaws being shooting percentage and protecting the Basketball. MayoΒ was quick to give credit to his group for their efforts.
” We had a very good game tonight and showed improvement on some of the areas we have been struggling with, ” said Mayo. “We were 10-12 from free throws line. We only had 14 turnovers. And we out rebound Martinsville by 3 rebounds. We are proud of each of the players on our team tonight and look forward to seeing if we can build on this Friday vs James River.”
Senior Callie Harris was the third Musketeer in the new found comfort on the offensive end. Her 13 points included the sixth made 3-pointer and going four of six from the free throw line.
Aaliyah Hampton added four points while manning the post along with Heflin and Kenzie Young. The defense and rebounding proved to be as important to the victory as the offense from the back court.
Bree Campbell – Zendejas accounted for the remaining basket π§Ί and now the team will look to make it two in a row on Friday night when they travel North to Buchanan to face James River High School. The contest versus the Knights was originally set to be a home game but was moved to make it part of a triple header as JRHS doesn’t have a Boys JV team this season.

The team connected from 1,2 and 3 while playing their normal tough defense and the scoring was balanced in both by the quarter and by the player. Friday night cannot get here fast enough !
