Floyd – Carroll County continued its late season pursuit of a .500 record in the Three Rivers District as the Lady Cavaliers defeated neighboring Floyd County 3-1 ( 25-12, 18-25, 25-17, 25-14) Tuesday night.

Carroll County (13-7, 4-5 TRD) followed the same path from their home victory over the BuffaloesπŸƒ as the Lady Cavaliers rolled through the first set, fell in the second and reset quickly to comfortably close out the match.

Laiken Burnett was actively involved in the match from her spot on the bench. Sidelined and wearing a Pink cast to protect her fractured hand,Β  The Senior leader switched her focus to both assistant Coach and cheerleader.

Corrie Delp, the second of the quartet of Seniors suffered an ankle injury midway through the final set and received treatment from the Floyd County trainer. The hope being that its only a sprain and more will be determined Wednesday.

Alyssa Lawson was also unavailable for the match due to a medical procedure so Head Coach Cindy Edwards was low on options as her team looked to close out the latest victory.

Maddie Hyatt opened the night in grand fashion as the Junior fired off two Aces to start the night. Floyd County battled back to knot the set at 5-5 before the remaining two Seniors, Brooke Webb and Callie Harris teamed up with Ali Wright to pile up the Kills.

Faith Nicholson continues to look more and more comfortable now that she is the full time Libero. Losing your floor General (Burnett) creates a need for multiple people to slide into new roles and it appears that the team was adapted well.

Raylee Goins had the honor πŸŽ– of closing out the first set as the Sophomore landed a kill and then a service winner to end the 25-12 set. Wright led the way with 3 blocks and two points from the service line.

Floyd County jumped out to a 10-3 lead to start the second set and managed to maintain the seven point advantage all the way through the 25-18 set. Harris provided two highlights in the defeat with a perfectly placed tear drop Ace and delivering a sidearm kill. The rarest of rare ways to score a point.

Webb took center stage in the third set by scoring seven kills. Arizona Thompson added a Kill and Nicholson finished off the 25-17 victory with an Ace.

The score was tied 8-8 in the fourth set when Delp rolled her ankle and dropped to the floor. After a brief delay for medical treatment ( Kudos to the Floyd County Trainer for his prompt attention), Carroll County resumed play by going on a 12-2 run to put both the set and the match out of reach.

Goins provided the spotlight stretch in the 25-14 closeout set. The Lady Cavaliers led 13-9 when she personally went kill, block, kill to secure the outcome. Harris added another tear drop while Webb continued to pile up kills.

Carroll County has three regular season matches remaining, beginning with the final rode contest at Radford Thursday night. The team finally ends their month long road trip next week when they host Martinsville and James River on The Hill.

Floyd County Junior Varsity dropped the opening set before rallying back to edge Carroll County 26-24 in the second set. The Buffaloes closed out the match 15-9 in the final set.

Nikki Heflin and her JV team also return to action 🎬 Thursday night at Radford.

Last night at Floyd County High School 🏫 was yet another great opportunity to share a moment with Sherry Slaughter! Neat, Neat Lady who has duel citizenship in Carroll & Floyd County..

Sherry works out here in Laurel Fork as she plays a HUGE role in making everything run smoothly at Olde Mill Golf Resort β›³. Working alongside Bo Goins and Hagen Giles, Sherry is part of a great team and works within shouting distance of her Mother πŸ‘© as Mom does the same at our restaurant.

Sherry and Bo

Β  Now let’s connect the dots between Sherry, Vickey Ritchie and Linda / myself over the past 96 hours.

Friday we crossed paths after Boo Ridge prep. Catching both Bo and Sherry together was a Blessing.

Saturday morning πŸŒ„, Sherry and her daughter drove over to Hillsville Elementary School to support Vickey and her Special Olympics effort at Boo Ridge!

Sunday it was back to Hillsville Elementary for Vickey and Basketball practice and then on to Harrisonburg for Trace Reavis golf coverage.

Being that Carroll County plays out at Olde Mill, Sherry had a vested interest in Trace and followed the coverage on our site.

Full circle πŸ”΅, Sherry was at the Floyd County Volleyball 🏐 match last night as she resides on their s side of our neighborly County line.

The photos πŸ“· above came from Sherry after her visit to Boo Ridge.

Whole Lotta of Vickey Ritchie, Linda Carter and Sherry Slaughter in my life the past few days !! If one is going to run themselves ragged, I could not imagine three people who I would rather have been with.

Floyd County Junior Varsity Volleyball team dropped the opening set before storming back to edge Carroll County 2-1 (20-25, 26-24, 15-9) Tuesday night at Floyd High School.

Nikki Heflin now has three matches remaining in her rookie season as Junior Varsity Head Coach. Heflin moved up from the top spot of the Middle School 🏫 program during the off-season after Jason Petty retired.

The extra responsibility of coaching your own child adds to your thought process. Last night, after the match ended, I asked Hayden if she knew that she had a “pretty cool Mother ? She smiled and said Yes ! This in turn, made me smile.

Shelia Harris has been with Coach Heflin every step of the way this season which has been a Blessing for our new Coach.

About the Match :

Carroll County raced out to a 12-3 lead behind two Aces from Aubrey Hanshaw and kills from Paige Ogle. The Buffaloes continued to claw their way back into the set, eventually pulling within two at 22-20. Coach used her final timeout to settle her team down and the Lady Cavaliers finished the set with the final three points as Aaliyah Hampton scored a kill and Ogle closed out the 25-20 victory with a service winner.

Β  The second set was much more back and forth. Carroll County trailed 14-11 until their longest run πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ of the night netted seven straight points. Hampton led the charge from the service line with three efforts that were not returned, Heflin added a Kill plus Morgan Osborne teamed up with Annabelle Short for another one.

Carroll County still lead 22-19 when Floyd County used its final timeout. Two highlights down the stretch was a kill from Hampton with her back to the net and Ogle tied it up at 24 with a strong finish. Unfortunately, Floyd County finished the set with the final two points, tying the match with a 26-24 victory.

In the winner take all race 🏁 to 15 points Floyd County scored the first six and things looked hopeless for the Lady Cavaliers. Willow Barham landed a kill to end a 5-0 run to cut βœ‚οΈ the deficit to 6-5 but that was as close as Carroll County would get in the 15-9 final set.

The mounted Mascot

I will add a couple of quick notes πŸ“ before writing ✍ the Varsity story.

First – it was neat to see πŸ‘€ Isaiah Easter and his Mother at the away match last night ! Our Varsity Quarterback will be back at Floyd County High School with Head Coach Seth Greer and the 🏈🏈🏈 team on Friday night. Mom played Volleyball 🏐 for Carroll County back in the day and yes, Vickie Easter was coached by Cindy Edwards.

Second – Thank You to Marion Harris for adding a stop βœ‹ to his drive over to Floyd as he took care of a loose end for us. Greatly appreciate πŸ™ the assistance !

Third – why go into such detail for a Junior Varsity Volleyball match ? Easy answer, the Coaches, the Players and the Parents. It matters to me because it matters to them !

Fourth – the next story will cover the Varsity match and it will be what I call a grown-up write ✍ so that our friend David Broyles can continue to hold down the Fort until the folks in charge of The Carroll News can fill the giant shoes πŸ‘ž of Allen Worrell.

Fifth – Thank You Mama Smoot for the Pics from the match !

Six and Final – Thank You for caring ❀ enough to read the story ! This group is our future…..
