Floyd – Carroll County continued its late season pursuit of a .500 record in the Three Rivers District as the Lady Cavaliers defeated neighboring Floyd County 3-1 ( 25-12, 18-25, 25-17, 25-14) Tuesday night.
Carroll County (13-7, 4-5 TRD) followed the same path from their home victory over the Buffaloesπ as the Lady Cavaliers rolled through the first set, fell in the second and reset quickly to comfortably close out the match.
Laiken Burnett was actively involved in the match from her spot on the bench. Sidelined and wearing a Pink cast to protect her fractured hand,Β The Senior leader switched her focus to both assistant Coach and cheerleader.
Corrie Delp, the second of the quartet of Seniors suffered an ankle injury midway through the final set and received treatment from the Floyd County trainer. The hope being that its only a sprain and more will be determined Wednesday.
Alyssa Lawson was also unavailable for the match due to a medical procedure so Head Coach Cindy Edwards was low on options as her team looked to close out the latest victory.
Maddie Hyatt opened the night in grand fashion as the Junior fired off two Aces to start the night. Floyd County battled back to knot the set at 5-5 before the remaining two Seniors, Brooke Webb and Callie Harris teamed up with Ali Wright to pile up the Kills.
Faith Nicholson continues to look more and more comfortable now that she is the full time Libero. Losing your floor General (Burnett) creates a need for multiple people to slide into new roles and it appears that the team was adapted well.
Raylee Goins had the honor π of closing out the first set as the Sophomore landed a kill and then a service winner to end the 25-12 set. Wright led the way with 3 blocks and two points from the service line.
Floyd County jumped out to a 10-3 lead to start the second set and managed to maintain the seven point advantage all the way through the 25-18 set. Harris provided two highlights in the defeat with a perfectly placed tear drop Ace and delivering a sidearm kill. The rarest of rare ways to score a point.
Webb took center stage in the third set by scoring seven kills. Arizona Thompson added a Kill and Nicholson finished off the 25-17 victory with an Ace.
The score was tied 8-8 in the fourth set when Delp rolled her ankle and dropped to the floor. After a brief delay for medical treatment ( Kudos to the Floyd County Trainer for his prompt attention), Carroll County resumed play by going on a 12-2 run to put both the set and the match out of reach.
Goins provided the spotlight stretch in the 25-14 closeout set. The Lady Cavaliers led 13-9 when she personally went kill, block, kill to secure the outcome. Harris added another tear drop while Webb continued to pile up kills.
Carroll County has three regular season matches remaining, beginning with the final rode contest at Radford Thursday night. The team finally ends their month long road trip next week when they host Martinsville and James River on The Hill.
Floyd County Junior Varsity dropped the opening set before rallying back to edge Carroll County 26-24 in the second set. The Buffaloes closed out the match 15-9 in the final set.
