Carroll County started the week with a road victory over Lord Botetourt 3-1 and closed out the perfect week with a similar 3-1 ( 25-9, 23-25, 25-22, 25-13) victory over visiting Floyd County Thursday night.
The latest victory leaves the Lady π© Cavaliers at 9-4 overall and now 1-2 in the Three Rivers District.
Back at home and at full strength, Carroll County looked to be playing at top speed early as they raced out to an 8-2 lead behind Kills from Ali Wright and three straight service points from Brooke Webb. Floyd rallied to pull within 11-8 before a service violation made it 12-8 and sent Senior Callie Harris to the line.
ELEVEN serves later the score was 23-8 and the Buffaloes were down for the count. Six Aces wrapped around three Webb kills put the opener out of reach and fellow Senior Laiken Burnett closed out the 25-9 victory with yet another Ace.
Set number two was off to a tremendous start, thanks to the serving of of Burnett and Junior Katie Beasley. Those two teamed up on a series of Aces and Corrie Delp added two Kills as Carroll County led 11-5.
Floyd County started piling up solid Digs and quietly snuck back into the set. The Buffaloes never strung together more than three points in any run but managed to pull even at 21-21. The visitors closed out the set 25-23, doing so in a fashion that felt more like a team stepping up than a team letting down after an easy first set.
Set number three proved to be nip and tuck as the teams were tied at 6,7,8 and once again at 13-13, after a 4-0 Floyd County run. The Buffaloes led 22-20 and appeared headed towards a 2-1 advantage until the Lady Cavaliers finished with a 5-0 ,run πββοΈ. Two Aces from Burnett and three Kills from Webb led the way in the exciting 25-22 outcome.
Floyd County was hoping to force a fifth and final set. Leading 8-6, Wright landed a Kill and for good measure, added five Aces. Webb added a Kill to end the 8-0 run πββοΈ and the chances of a fifth set.
The closing 11-5 run to end the set and the match, 25-13 displayed the depth of the Lady Cavaliers. Harris landed two more Aces, including a Soft Serve one that would have made Dairy Queen proud. Kills came from Webb, Raylee Goins, Arizona Thompson and a picture perfect block from Delp and Thompson.
Freshman Clara DeHaven had the pleasure of sending the crowd home happy by serving the final point in the 25-13 victory.
” I thought it was a very good week the kids ” said Head Coach Cindy Edwards. ” They’re playing hard and I’m very proud of them for that.”
Carroll County will return to The Hill on both Monday ( Pulaski County) and Tuesday (Radford ) before taking to the road for nearly a full month.
The Varsity match was part of the first of three straight Triple Headers as the Middle School π« opened the night π with a match versus Blacksburg. The Bruins swept out youngest Cavaliers 3-0 and I encourage you to check out the separate post π« on that match.
The Junior Varsity team played the middle match and the Lady Cavaliers dug out of a 1-0 hole π³ to defeat Floyd County 2-1 (21-25, 25-20, 15-11).
Again, please check β out the separate π Post π« on that match as well !
Couple of notes π now that its Friday morning π, once Kayla Nester is back at it and Coach Edwards is awake β°, I will circle π΅ back and add some stats and quotes to make this one Carroll News ready as Allen Worrell will be doing double duty tomorrow.
It’s worth noting also that Miss Burnett is playing the game at an incredibly High Level ( 38 Assists, 12 Digs) and the Senior is distributing the ball equally across the front line. Webb finished with a team high 15 Kills, followed closely by 12 for Wright (12,12 Digs and 5 Aces) and Delp with 9 Kills. Harris finished up in double figures with 14 Digs.
