Carroll County High School claimed five Three Rivers District Championships, led by Varsity Baseball and Corrie Delp as the Junior flirted with Cavalier history Thursday afternoon at Floyd County.
Brendan Farris not only captured the title in the High Jump his his effort of 6’0, but he booked a spot at the State Meet in Lynchburg on June 6th.
Delp entered the day already assured that she would be attending the Finals at Liberty University and had just reached 17 feet for the first time. Each of her first three attempts set new Personal Records and the third one (17, 7.75) left her just 1/4 inch shy of the All-Time School record.
Amelia Dalton brought home the crown 👑 in the Triple Jump. The ultra competitive young lady continues to impress while wearing the Cavalier colors, regardless of the Sport of the season.
Head Coach Shawn Montgomery reported that once again 17 Cavaliers set new Personal Records at the District meet.
Adam Nester and his Nester Nine JV Baseball team entered the day having already captured their District trophy 🏆and with no post-season games being played, the had a send off contest versus Patrick County.
The team lit up the scoreboard at Bill Worrell Field like a pinball machine or video game. By the time the dust settled the Cavaliers had posted a 16-1 victory over the Cougars.
The title was the sixth consecutive one for the Junior Varsity program. Steve Combs collected five straight before moving up to Varsity and now Nester hit the ground running 🏃♂️ by completing a near perfect 16-1 season. The future of Carroll County Baseball is looking bright!
If the future of the program looks bright, then the present looks like a solar eclipse as the Varsity team also posted a season with just one setback. The second game of the season, at Patrick County by one run.
Coach Casey Burcham commented about his team that night after the loss, saying that he liked what we was seeing from his squad. The next time out the Cavaliers won the first of 18 straight games.
As impressive as the winning streak is for the 19-1 team, its the manner that they conduct business that is the true show stopper. Every night they hit, hit with power, play defense and have a pitching staff that resembles the Atlanta Braves back in the 1980’s.
The depth of the arms, combined with the number of bats in the lineup sets the team up for a deep Regional run.
As dominant as Carroll County has been all season in the District, Patrick County entered the night just one game back. The Cougars played the Cavaliers to a one run game in Stuart so the entered the night with confidence.
Patrick County scored a run in the top of the first inning to take an early lead but what happened next was a Cavalanche. Peyton Spencer shook off the early run and dominated the game until Cody Reece finished off the seventh inning.
Reece was one of many offensive stars 🌟, with two hits, including one that left the yard. Spencer, Camden DeHaven and Colby Goad each joined Reece in the two hit club. Ben Phillips stuffed the box score, going 3 for 3 with three runs scored and two RBIS.
“Guys responded well tonight when we had a little adversity at the beginning,” said Burcham “Peyton Spencer does what Peyton does on the mound and threw a phenomenal game. Offensively we had a great approach and squared up baseballs most of the night in the gaps.
Proud of these guys, they work hard everyday and deserved this moment.”
All four Soccer teams had the night off as the Junior Varsity teams have completed their seasons while both Forrest Johnson and Adrienne Harris await the results from the Regional seedings.
Christy Shupe and the Boys Tennis team headed over to Patrick County and netted a 7-2 victory over the Cougars.
The Cavaliers won the singles matches 4-2 and then went on to sweep the three doubles matches. While the team as a whole won’t qualify for the Regional tournament, the Cavaliers will be represented by individuals next week when play begins.
Both CCHS Seniors closed out their final match with 2-0 records as Ethan Richardson and Paul Marshall swepted the day in Stuart.
Girls Tennis hosted Patrick County on The Hill and the day began with a touching Senior Day ceremony for both Tiffany Cruise and Erika McKenzie.
The Lady Cavaliers fell 6-3 to the Cougars but McKenzie ended up sweeping her matches, winning her singles 8-3 and then teaming up with Khloe Akers to win doubles 8-1.
The teams season is over but Coach McKenzie will await word from the Regional tournament to see if any Cavaliers qualify as individuals.
Alexis Dalton and Terry Warf were scheduled to coach the Junior Varsity Softball team against Patrick County on Thursday afternoon but the Cougars did not have enough players. The younger Lady Cavaliers were acknowledged before the start of the Varsity Girls took the field.
It was Father’s Day at Cavalier Park and we had Macie Adkins on the Diamond 💎 with each of the Varsity players and their Fathers for a Ceremonial First Pitch.
The ceremony was an absolute tug at the heart ❤ and then it was time for the game with the Lady Cougars. Patrick County sent lefty Hayden Lawless to the mound.
Patrick County scratched out a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on two singles and a walk. Carroll County looked to tie the game in the bottom of the first inning as Emma Harman walked and Natalie Burress reached on an error.
Addie Greene followed with a line drive to right field, the hardest hit ball by either team but it was right to Ava Hiatt and turned into a double play when Harman was tagged out at home plate.
Laiken Burnett followed with a line drive but it found the glove of third baseman Jenna Woods. Those two shots were part of 20 consecutive Lady Cavaliers to be retired.
Bayleigh Allen led off the third inning with a shot, Laynie-Jo Leonard sent a bullet to right field to lead off the fifth inning but both of those rips ended as an out.

When the dust settled Lawless had recorded a no-hitter with six strike outs.
The good news for the Lady Cavaliers is that they get to return to Cavalier Park Friday night to make up a District game versus James River High School at 5:00 pm.
We will be hosting a Veterans Appreciation Ceremonial First Pitch before hand.

Looking forward, Baseball will be hosting Regional games 1 and 2 if they win the opening game.
While the Girls Soccer ⚽️ will open on the road, Boys Soccer still has a chance of hosting a play-in game.
Both Track 👣 and Field teams head to Christiansburg next for their Regional meet.
Tennis will send individuals who qualify to their Regional meets.
Softball is still in the running for the final spot in the Regional tournament and if they play again after tonight it will be a road game.
