Amelia Holbrook wears #7 for Abingdon and is listed in the teams program as an eighth grade Midfielder. The restrictions in place that keep 8th graders from playing Varsity is the reason Holbrook plays for JV Coach James Anger instead of Varsity Coach Jordan Blackson.
The great news for Carroll County JV is they went toe to toe with every other Falcons player. Campbell Stokely scored the lone goal other than Holbrook in the 5-0 decision on Wednesday night at Tommy Thompson Field.
Head Coach Brittany Kinney also saw the progress her squad had made since a 7-0 setback in the season opener down in Washington County.
” I thought we did a great job attacking the goal. We got on their side of the field way more this time, which is huge improvement, ” said Kinney.
The program is in its first year back after a dormant period and has hit the ground running 🏃♂️ since the start of the season.
” At halftime, I told the girls that we had a huge improvement because when we played at Abingdon it was 0-6 tonight it was only 0-3,” added Kinney. ” Baya did a great job holding and challenging Abingdon’s number 7 Holbrook).
Our midfield work super hard all night. Vanessa also pushed, challenged, and attacked the goal.
When we played at Abingdon, it was our first game and we’ve grown so much since then! I’m proud of their efforts.
We are back to practice tomorrow and ready to work and prepare for James River.
We are wrapping up our season and they are continuing to show up and show out.”
The game versus James River on Friday night was a last minute schedule change and will cap off a week in which 10 Soccer ⚽️ matches will be held at Tommy Thompson Field.
Both Boys teams are set to play Floyd County Thursday night on Youth Jersey night.
Friday night will begin with James River and Carroll County JV and be followed by Glenvar and Carroll County Varsity.

Coach Kinney took a moment to share her thoughts on the previous match against Galax.
” We played super great against Galax. I felt we could have been a little more aggressive on attacking and finishing. Overall though, a win is a win.
We had great crosses for shots. Sherlyn had a beautiful shot off of a defensive error from a corner shot. Ithaca also had a beautiful drive in for her very first goal!!
Our thoughts and prayers are with Juliana. She suffered a season ending injury within the last 20 seconds.”
Patrick County Middle School has arrived for the Opening match of tonight’s Soccer doubleheader. They will take on Carroll County Middle School at 5pm.
Girls Junior Varsity will host Abingdon in the nightcap, beginning at roughly 6pm.

Addie Greene had herself quite a ball game as the Sophomore led the Lady Cavaliers to a come from behind 9-6 victory over James River.

Greene started the night in the circle 🔵 and was locked in a 1-1 pitchers duel when the Lady Cavaliers once again where dealt a tough half inning. James River clumped together some flairs and seeing eye base hits and just like that the score was 5-1 in favor of the home team.
Carroll County answered back with a five run rally to take a 6-5 lead with Greene clearing the fence with a home run. Greene was not alone by any means in the offensive attack as Laynie-Jo Leonard recorded her first four hit ball game as CCHS pounded out 13 base hits.
Six of the base knocks went for extra bases, including four doubles and two round trippers as Greene broke the 6-6 tie with her second home run in the top of the seventh inning. Laiken Burnett joined Greene by finishing 3 of 4, with a double and three runs scored.
The career night for Leonard stopped at 4 of 4, 1 run scored and two RBIS. Emma Harman cleared the bases with her double and finished up in the circle to earn the victory. Madison Coleman and Raylee Goins both finished up with one hit, one run and one RBI in the victory.
The Lady Cavaliers finished the contest with just one misque in the field to improve to 6-10 on the season with five games remaining, including four straight back home at Cavalier Park, beginning Friday night versus Floyd County.

Carroll County Varsity Girls Soccer ⚽️ recorded their eighth shutout of the season as they blanked visiting Galax 4-0 at Tommy Thompson Field. Alexis Sheffey and the backline defense held the Maroon Tide in check throughout the 80 minutes and the team shared the wealth on the offensive side of the Pitch.
Callie Harris found Savannah Swecker at 26:50 of the first half for the opening goal and just over three minutes later, Alisia Torres – Lopez followed her own shot to score her first goal on the season to make it 2-0.
Karmen Smith drilled a direct kick from 25 yards out just before the end of the opening half to put the game out of reach at 3-0. Smith didn’t stop there as the Senior Tri-Captain assisted on the final goal of the night by finding Harris at 23:29 of the second half.
Smith and Harris both finished up with one goal and one assist to accompany the defense in adding yet another shutout in a season of such efforts. The team stands at 8-2-2 with the challenge of facing mighty Glenvar on Friday night.

Casey Burcham and once beaten team continues to pick things up and put them down as Varsity Baseball ⚾️ defeated James River 12-2 in Buchanan.
Ben Phillips continues to dominate on the mound and the team continues to not get caught up in who’s turn it is to lead the offense. The Cavaliers needed a full seven innings to build the 10 run advantage and that only matters in regards to the Junior Varsity game that followed.
” I Thought we battled through a game tonight, ” said Burcham. ” Score isn’t indicative of the game. Thought the road trip played a factor early in the game, but we were able to overcome and win against a good James River team.”
” I thought Ben and Colby (Goad) controlled the game from the mound well tonight,” added Burcham. ” Staying ahead most hitters and creating soft contact. Played a great game defensively.”
The Cavaliers finished with matching twelves, in both hits and runs. Cameron DeHaven led the team with 3 RBIs while Slade Quesenberry went 3 of 3 and Peyton Spencer and Cody Reece finished up with two hits apiece.
Great pitching, timely hitting and strong defense is a tough combination when all three are clicking on the same night.
James River High School plays their home doubleheaders in reverse fashion with Varsity playing first and then the Junior Varsity afterwards. The Nester Nine completed their latest victory, scoring the winning run 🏃♂️ in the top of the sixth inning and holding on for a 3-2 victory over the Knights.
Sadly, the game didn’t end until after 10:00pm and when you add in Roanoke traffic and Salem construction, the Junior Varsity team will arrive back to The Hill sometime Wednesday morning. The good news is that it was a pitchers duel or it could have been worse.

Varsity Boys 👦 Soccer made the short drive over to face Galax in what has been quite the competitive series between the neighboring teams. The first of two matches between the squads lived up to the hype as it lasted 80 minutes plus two five minute overtimes before ending in a 1-1 tie.
Galax scored an early goal against Christian Hernandez but the Cavalier defense stiffened from there and scored the equalizer on a Penalty Kick just before halftime. The two teams will get to finish this one on the Pitch at Tommy Thompson Field when the Maroon Tide travel to The Hill.
Galax did win the Junior Varsity game by a score of 3-0 ,in the opening match.
” The jv boys played hard. We gave up an early pk and never really recovered from that,” said head coach Jeremy Puckett. ” We had some opportunities but never really challenged the keeper. We are looking forward to playing Floyd on Thursday night, which is a must win game for us to have a shot at playing Glenvar again.”

Brittany Kinney and her Junior Varsity Girls Soccer team was missing a few players when they opened the night versus Galax. The Coach turned to first year player, Aaliyah Hampton to play goal keeper and the Freshman responded with her first career shutout, 2-0!

Runs Hard To Come By In Carroll County Junior Varsity Cavaliers Win Versus James River Junior Varsity Knights
Both teams were strong on the hill on Tuesday, but Carroll County Junior Varsity Cavaliers defeated James River Junior Varsity Knights 3-2. Reid Horton started the game for Carroll County Junior Varsity Cavaliers and recorded eight outs.
The bottom of the lineup was strong for Carroll County Junior Varsity Cavaliers. Peyton Goad, Chase Hart, and Caleb Shaw combined for four of the team’s six hits in their victory. They scored one run and drove in three.
James River Junior Varsity Knights got on the board in the first inning after Easton Medley singled, scoring two runs.
Chase Hart singled to the right side of the infield, which helped Carroll County Junior Varsity Cavaliers tie the game at two in the top of the fifth.
A triple by Caleb Shaw gave Carroll County Junior Varsity Cavaliers the lead, 3-2, in the top of the sixth.
Bryce Nicholson earned the win for Carroll County Junior Varsity Cavaliers. The hurler allowed two hits and zero runs over three and one-third innings, striking out eight and walking two. Levi Peck took the loss for James River Junior Varsity Knights.
The starting pitcher went six innings, giving up three runs on six hits, striking out seven and walking one. Reid Horton started on the hill for Carroll County Junior Varsity Cavaliers. The hurler surrendered three hits and two runs (zero earned) over two and two-thirds innings, striking out eight and walking none.
Caleb Shaw, the number seven hitter for Carroll County Junior Varsity Cavaliers, led the way with two runs batted in. The outfielder went 3-for-3 on the day.
Levi Peck went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead James River Junior Varsity Knights in hits.

” Varsity had a dominating win last night against Galax! The girls were able to keep the ball on their offensive half for almost the entire game. Galax had one breakaway in the second half but goalie Alexis Sheffey stepped up and made a huge 1 on 1 save!
During the game we were able to see some different looks on defense with Melissa Mize, Jackie Arellano-Torres, Kristen Dalton, Elizabeth Stevens, and Laurel Sutphin holding up the back line. This allowed Karmen Smith and Harleigh Riggins to move up into the midfield. Alisia Torres-Lopez got her first career Varsity goal last night!! Karmen Smith and Callie Harris had 1 goal and 1 assist each! Savannah Swecker also added a goal!
