Carroll County Softball hangs tough with Alleghany before dropping both ends of a doubleheader in the Highlands, 4-3 & 4-1.

Some nights a team cannot get out of its own way, other times they play extremely well and tough luck dictates the outcome. The latter was the case as Carroll County Varsity Softball dropped both ends of a Three Rivers District doubleheader Tuesday by scores of 4-3 and 4-1.

Alleghany entered the day atop of the district standings with a zero in the league loss column. CCHS Head Coach Rick Nester sent Addie Greene to the mound in the opening game with the hopes of keeping the hard hitting Cougars off balance.

Line Score

” Addie pitched really well and did exactly what we needed to do,” said Nester. ” She kept them from squaring up on the ball and we played great defense behind her.”

The two game doubleheaders are scheduled for 5 innings each but at the end of the opener the score remained 0-0, sending it to extra innings. Laynie-Jo Leonard delivered a two run single in the top of the sixth inning to give Carroll County a 2-0 lead but AHS managed to plate two runs in the bottom of the frame to force another inning of play.

Laiken Burnett delivered a RBI single to score Natalie Burress in the top of the seventh to put the Lady Cavaliers back ahead in the seventh inning. But the Cougars answered back once again, scoring the walkoff run on a blooper just over the infield.

” I told the girls that if they continue to play that way the rest of the season, that we will win more than we lose,” added Nester. ” We played all three phases of the game well, we just couldn’t score enough runs.”

Emma Harman entered the circle for the nightcap and was equally effective early on. CCHS was the home team in Game 2 and the score was tied 1-1 heading into the fourth inning.

Line Score

Burnett drove in Harman in the bottom of the first to knot the game at 1-1 but that would prove to be the lone run scored for the Lady Cavaliers.

Harman pitched well against the Cougars but AHS eventually bunched up some base hits in the top of the fourth and plated three runs 🏃‍♂️ on a bases loaded hit.

Carroll County finished the day with 11 base hits and a quartet of Lady Cavaliers finished up with two hits. Leonard, Burnett, Greene and Burress. Harman, Raylee Goins and Kenzie McMillian collected the remaining three hits.

The Junior Varsity team stayed home at Cavalier Park and hosted their Cougars counterparts. After dropping game one, the younger Lady Cavaliers pushed Game 2 into extra innings before falling 6-5.

Both teams are set to play at Cavalier Park on Thursday evening but with different opponents. The Junior Varsity team will host Fort Chiswell and the Varsity team will host Glenvar.

In between the teams will honor Carlie Beamer on Senior Night.

There’s no Place like Home as Carroll County High School Boys Soccer sweep Alleghany by a combined 6-0 score Tuesday night !

The meeting…

Carroll County High School Soccer celebrated Ronnie Collins Night at the Pitch with a pair of dominant performances against the Cougars of Alleghany High School. Varsity won 4-0 after the Junior Varsity won 2-0 to open the night.

Head Coach Jeremy Puckett sent his 11 out in hopes of setting the tone for the evening and his Cavaliers did just that from the First Touch.

After a scoreless fourteen minutes, Aden Puckett found the back of the net at 15:28 in what would prove to be the match winning goal. Fernando Ruiz was stellar in Goal, teaming up with the backline defense to keep the Cougars off the score sheet.

Christian Solis Ruiz and Alex Silva teamed up for the lone second half goal with 12:43 remaining in the contest. Carroll County continued to attack throughout the rest of the night but Trystan Hannah  (GK) kept the visitors from being run out of the match.

Carroll County JV Boys Soccer will return to the Pitch at Tommy Thompson Field on Thursday night 🌙.

In the nightcap, Forrest Johnson turned his horses 🐎 loose on one end and Christian Hernandez was doing his best Tim Howard impersonation on the other end.

Daniel Torres – Lopez had himself a night to remember as the Senior forward had a foot in all four goals. Landon Puckett was electric with his passes in the first half and Judah Collins flexed his muscles as well.

Muscles is a key 🔑 word when it comes to describing the Cougars. Alleghany has six players that are head and shoulders bigger than the Cavaliers ( and some College teams), putting an emphasis on ball handling.

Just 4:01 was gone from the clock when Puckett fed a textbook pass to Torres – Lopez and DT-L took it from there. The early goal made it 1-0 and more importantly energized the team.

Hernandez made his first ridiculous stop at 30:45 to protect the 1-0 lead and then a trio of Cavaliers teamed up to score the second goal.

Puckett led Torres – Lopez with a perfect pass and then the ball was placed just as well to the foot of Collins and the Sophomore took care of business at 28:51.

The rest of the first half was all about Hernandez and Thomas Payne. Payne surrendered himself with his forehead to block an absolute rocket 🚀 shot of the foot of Mason Hale on a direct kick.

Carroll County doubled up the effort in the second half by adding two more goals  over the final forty minutes and watching Hernandez stand on his head.

Torres – Lopez pushed the lead to 3-0 just one minute into the second half. Ronnie Collins was still in the press box and got to announce the goal. The Hat 👒 Trick was completed with 11:56 remaining in the match after Collins fed Torres – Lopez a picturesque pass to make it 4-0.

Nine minutes remained when Hernandez was facing a direct kick from Kevin Worley. Worley didn’t hold anything back on the attempt yet Hernandez guessed correctly and made the save.

Carroll County Varsity Soccer ⚽️ returns to The Hill on Thursday night and then holds Senior Night on May 5th.

The Box Score

Coach checked in to share this take on the latest victory…

” Solid effort by our guys tonight. Battled entire game.

Ben and Peyton made adjustments throughout the game on the mound and really threw a good game.

Played really well defensively. Alleghany does a great job getting the ball in play. Felt like we didn’t let their offensive pressure affect us every much.

Offensively Britt and Peyton paced us with 2 hits apiece and both drove in a run. Same story on offense, I thought we battled throughout the lineup and came up with just enough hits tonight.”

Meanwhile, the Nester Nine remained undefeated, defeating Alleghany 15-0 at Bill Worrell Field. We will have more information about this one when we hear from Head Coach Adam Nester.
