Carroll County High Varsity Softball team will travel over to Galax on Wednesday evening while the Junior Varsity team hosts Tazewell High in a rescheduled double header.
Cody Reece and Camden DeHaven both went yard against the Bearcats
The Hill – Starting left-hander Ben Phillips was dealing Tuesday night at Bill Worrell Field and by the time the dust settled Carroll County High School posted an 11-0 non-district victory over Virginia High School.
Phillips faced just one over the five inning minimum, thanks in part to the throwing arm of his battery mate, Berrier Berrier as he fired a perfect strike of his own to erase a would be base stealer in the top of the fifth inning to help Phillips out after the Senior allowed his second single of the contest.
Crafty is the word to best describe Phillips as the manner that he worked allowed the game to end barely sixty minutes after it began. Nine strikeouts and no walks was the final stat line.
” I think it was one of our most complete games at the plate, we put a lot of balls in play hard, and did a good job of situational hitting, ” said Head Coach Casey Burcham. ” I felt like everyone that swung it tonight had a great approach at the plate.”.
Cody Reece made an over the shoulder play on a foul ball hit to the left field corner in the top of the third inning but otherwise the Cavaliers just made the plays they needed to make behind Phillips.
Making the plays in front of them proved to be a challenge for the Bearcats as the visitors committed five errors. Not that the Cavaliers needed the help as the bats were working just fine.
Gage Nicholson lined a one out single in the bottom of the first and Reece followed with an absolute no doubt Home Run to give CCHS an early 2-0 lead.
Camden DeHaven reached on one of the above mentioned errors and Colby Goad followed with a perfect bunt to move him over. Peyton Spencer hit a grounder to third that was fielded cleanly but hesitantion allowed another runner to reach base. The duo teamed up to create the third run without the ball leaving the infield.
After another three up, three down inning, the Cavaliers batted around in the bottom of the third inning. Two errors were mixed in the nine batters but the heavy damage was done by Dalton Busick and DeHaven. Busick plated two runs πββοΈ with a double and DeHaven followed with the second Home Run of the night, pushing the lead out to 8-0.
Carroll County added a ninth run after Goad reached on an error and took second on the throw. One of the keys π to the game was the constant pressure that the Cavaliers applied by putting the ball in play all but four times.
Busick lined a double right down the third base line with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning. DeHaven followed with a perfectly placed bunt single and both came around to score the runs needed to end the game after the top of the fifth inning.
Flawless defense, long balls, great bunts and putting the ball in play is the stuff that instructional videos are made of. When you add in the way that Phillips was dealing, it almost seemed unfair.
” Ben had another stellar game on the mound, ” added Burcham. ” Seemed to have his off speed pitches working really well tonight. I thought he mixed them early in counts and kept Va High off balance. Best game he has had getting his breaking ball in locations that he wanted. Change up was terrific. Very proud of the guys tonight.”
Carroll County ( 9-1) returns to action π¬ Wednesday afternoon at Galax High School while the Junior Varsity plays at Bill Worrell Field against the Maroon Tide.
The scheduled game between the Junior Varsity teams was scrubbed due to a questionable weather forecast.
We are excited to announce that Mr Ronnie Collins and his RGC Realty LLC is the next person to agree to sponsor a Free Night π of Soccer β½οΈ on The Hill.
Paul Nester and OneofUs.Care sponsored the first Boys and first Girls Home matches of the season and we were pleased with the number of fans that showed up to support our teams !
The Soccer β½οΈ community as a whole is looking for ways to reach deeper into the potential fan base and this presents a wonderful opportunity to expose more friends and neighbors to the game.
