Let’s call this one A Day in the Life of a High School 🏫 Athletic Director on a rainy Spring Day…

It’s 9:30 on a Friday morning πŸŒ„ and Carroll County is slated to compete in seven outdoor events later today. These games are spread across four sports and that is relevant because it means four different playing surfaces.

James River High School in Buchanan and Grayson County High School are our partners today so now we add in three School campuses.

Any District contest not played today will have to be rescheduled and you hope that the Tennis with Grayson County can still be played. Factor in that James River is 99 minutes away by car πŸš— so decisions with them have to be made sooner because of the distance needing to be driven.

Coach Rick Nester and Casey Burcham both have fields that would need to be prepared and in a manner that would hold up across four hours as both Bill Worrell Field and Cavalier Park are slated for doubleheaders.

Both Girls πŸ‘§ Soccer ⚽️ teams are supposed to leave for Buchanan this afternoon and keep in mind that a Soccer Pitch is grass only so its easier to get ready where the Diamonds πŸ’Ž are potential mud piles across the infield.

Tennis 🎾 is normally the first to get pushed back because concrete cannot absorb water.

The forecast does not look promising, not even a little and that has to be taken into consideration.

Seven Head Coaches are waiting for an answer (Γ— 2 as we need opponents). Bus 🚌 and drivers are part of the mix. Availability for the games to be rescheduled.

Β  Track πŸ‘£ and Field and Cross Country have competed in less than desirable conditions with a day in Radford and another in Bristol that come to mind.

Our thoughts and prayers πŸ™ are with our AD, Mr Kevin DeHaven and all others participating in the decision process this morning πŸŒ„.

At the end of the day, all of the factors will be considered for each of the games. Just maybe, Kevin DeHaven will make it to the end of the day with a pleasant disposition !
