Martinsville – Two up and two down for new Girls Varsity Soccer ⚽️ Coach Adrienne Harris as Carroll County moved to 2-0 by defeating host Martinsville 4-0 on Monday night.
Last year, Head Coach Ben Tickle and All-Time leading scorer, Ashlyn Newman led CCHS to one of their best seasons in school history. This season is designed to build for the long-term future of the program, with the first task already done by getting the Junior Varsity team back up and running.
While Harris, Harris and Harris might sound like a Law firm, it was on full display once again against the Bulldogs. Callie Harris scored the only goal in the teams season opening 1-0 victory at Pulaski County and the midfielder opened the scoring early in the first half.
The teams were knotted at 0-0 despite the Cavaliers outplaying the home team. In the 32 minute, Harris found the back of the net once again and the defense for CCHS made sure it held up.
Alexis Sheffey once again played 80 minutes of shut out goal keeping, including one spectacular save at 26:29. The stop came at a crucial time as the score was just 2-0 at the time. The defense did their part, limiting the Bulldogs to single digits in scoring chances.
Harris teamed up with Karmen Smith to double up the score from 1-0 to 2-0 early in the second half. The duo switched roles later in the half with Smith sending in a shot from just inside the midfield line at 20:17. As the Sun set on the game, the scoring opportunities increased for the Cavaliers.
Harleigh Riggins was on the receiving end of a Harris pass and put the biscuit in the basket 🧺 at 13:01. Riggins pushed the lead to 4-0 and Harris finished up with two goals and two assists on the night.
Varsity is now at 2-0 and has yet to surrender a goal across 160 minutes. While it’s not realistic to think it could last forever doesn’t mean that it is not fun while it lasts.
“Great team win last night against Martinsville!!,” said Head Coach Adrienne Harris. ” All 22 girls got to play and contribute on the field to the win. Last night was by far the best game we have had connecting passing and building up our offense. Along with a strong offensive effort our defense also had a great night. They finished with another clean sheet and any opportunities and momentum Martinsville started to have our defense stepped right up and shut it down! Overall, awesome team win and now we move on to Galax Wednesday!!”
Both squads are set to return to action 🎬 Wednesday night at Galax High School 🏫.
