Bassett – Veteran Coach Rick Nester wasn’t sure what to expect from his young team as he started his 41st season and things didn’t start out picture perfect Wednesday night at Bassett. Fortunately his team shook, shook , shook it off and coasted to a 24-9 victory over the host Bengals.

” In the top of the first inning both Addie Greene and Holly Miller hit line shots but both went right at a fielder,” Nester said. ” Then in the bottom of the first inning we went out there and committed three errors. We were fortunate that we held them to just two runs and that is what I told them after the inning. 2-0 was not going to beat us.”

The defense settled down quickly, adding just one error after the opening inning and the bats were on fire πŸ”₯.

Emma Harman earned her initial Varsity victory in relief of starter Greene. To say that the Junior helped her own cause would qualify as an understatement. At the plate, Harman finished five of five with six RBI’s to lead the 23 hit attack.

Miller lit things up after her loud out in the first inning. The Junior leadoff hitter went four of five, scored five runs and joined Harman in the six RBI club.

Greene and fellow Sophomore Natalie Burress ( 5 runs scored) each collected four base hits and Brooke Webb made the most of her two hits by driving in five runs. Webb delivered a three run double that helped put the Cavaliers on their way to a victory.

Madison Coleman rounded out the pick six of players that collected multiple hits by stroking three base knocks.

Bassett battled back to tie the game at 9-9 in the bottom of the 5th inning but when both teams went to their second pitcher, it was all Cavaliers. Carroll County plated 15 unanswered runs in the final two innings to produce the 24-9 final score.

” Everyone reached base at least one time and eight players scored a run,” added Nester. ” I just asked them to keep playing their game and they certainly did that tonight.”

Waving in 24 runners from the third base coaching box might have Nester icing down his rotator cuff ahead of practice tomorrow. But that is a great problem to have.

Bassett Junior Varsity made the trip to The Hill and earned a 16-6 victory over Carroll County.

Both teams will enjoy one day off before heading up to Dublin on Friday afternoon as Pulaski County is next up on the schedule πŸ“….
