A Screen Play starring Jason Stockner as Coach K and Hayden Jackson as a young Larry Bird, co-starring Blake Reed as John Stockton…

Quick heads up before I start, this will be a much longer read than normal so if you don’t have a connection to the Carroll County High School Boys Junior Varsity Basketball team this might be a hard pass.

Anyone who follows my writing ✍ style certainly knows that I’m simply a Aaron Sorkin wannabe. Tonight after getting back from Patrick County I hit play ▢️ on the DVD πŸ“€ where Sorkin is describing the difference between being a person who tells a story and a journalist.

He has penned some of the greatest Screen Plays in the past 40 years and the Haters pounce on every fact that he doesn’t follow to the absolute letter.

I get that because I have to treat a story that could run in the Carroll News as if I am playing a journalist. If I am telling a story for my site I get to have fun with it.

You want the Truth? You can’t Handle the Truth – I still smile everytime I hear that iconic line that Sorkin wrote for Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men back in the 1980’s.

Five reasons that I have a soft spot in my Heart ❀ for Junior Varsity players and Junior Varsity parents.

  1. They play hard and outside of their Family πŸ‘ͺ and Friends, it seems nobody really is all that interested.
  2. There Parents face even greater challenges than the Varsity parents because they have to get to a road game 90 minutes earlier.
  3. The Coaches don’t get the same respect because they’re “just the JV Coach”
  4. The Parents work for a living and Love their Children just as much as Varsity parents.
  5. They are our Future !

Prelude – Stockner chose Coach K and Barnes chose Bobby Knight. This is perfect because you now have two great Coaches where one played for the other!!!

Why does Hayden Jackson get to be listed as a star 🌟? It was his Mother πŸ‘© that took the time to tell me that her and her Son enjoy my efforts. Why does that matter so much – because if my site lacks one thing, its interaction. I actually have Zero idea πŸ’‘ of who is actually reading and who isn’t????

Blake Reed as a Co-Star 🌟 ??? I am currently asking his Mother πŸ‘© for a Huge assistance right now and I am trying hard to earn Brownie points with her.

The reality is my favorite part of this team is how interchangeable the players are. They are as deep as any squad I have seen at the JV level in a few years.

Opening scene – Knight and K are in the lockeroom pre-game and the two are discussing the challenge awaiting them. Que Knight, with all of his intensity opening up to K about not being sure he has a Blue Print that guarantees him a Victory that night to protect his perfect season ( Also perfect that it was Knight back in 1976 that had the last perfect season in the NCAA Top Level.

Coach K leans into the General as says the following – everything I am on the Basketball πŸ€ court is because of you being my mentor. Let me show you how to beat Michigan ( Patrick County) for the National Championship. Knight is trembling as the two embrace and utters, Go out there and Win one for the Gipper.

  End of Scene….

Scene 2 ( Larry Bird 🐦 is relevant to the story because he started out as a Freshman on that team before dropping out an going back home to drive a Garbage Truck) Of Course he laced them up again at Indiana State and the rest is History on that one.

Coach K is talking to his team in the huddle and he is explaining to Bird and Stockton his plan. He explained that he needed to help out his mentor by showing him how to win a game.

Bird and Stockton would run through a wall for Coach K. Here’s the plan, Bird you keep playing at three quarters speed and Stockton, you and the others play at half speed to start the game.

The plan was to lull the opponent into a false sense of security. Bird scored the teams first six points and at the end of the first quarter it was 12-11.

Scene 3 – Start of the second quarter, in the Huddle, Coach K says just one word – NOW. The team kicks it into High Gear βš™ and wins the second quarter 16-5 and head into the lockeroom ahead 28-16.

Scene 4 – Knight is talking to K during the break and challenged him to prove his point because he wasn’t convinced. K heads back out and lights an even hotter flame πŸ”₯ under his team.

Scene 5 – The team flirts with the unattainable PERFECT quarter. The tally for the 7:00 was 22-1. I had to fight with the Director on this one because she said it would be ridiculous to believe 22-1.

Scene 6 – It’s the start of the final quarter and Coach K tells his team its time to call of the Dogs πŸ•. We are not going to go all Lane Kiffin on them ( inside joke about the Ole Miss – Duke Bowl game last month). The opponent wins the final stretch 7-2 as the final score is 52-24 with the middle of the game being a 38-6 run.

Scene 7 – Coach K walks πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ off the court after the post-game hand βœ‹ shakes, looks into the eyes πŸ‘€ of Coach Knight and says – can you follow my blue print or do you want me to Coach your game too ?

The scene ends with Knight taking a chair πŸ’Ί and throwing its across the court, just kidding, even though that did happen once.

Coach Knight repeats the game plan to his undefeated team. Bryce Smoot starring as Johnny Dawkins, Ethan Richardson as Mike Dunleavy Jr, Cody Reece as Bill Laimbeer, Isaiah Easter as Wally Walker and Brayden Smoot as Jon Scheyer.

Scene 8 – The team followed the Map like a Pirate ☠ looking for a buried treasure. End of the first quarter the team trailed 18-9. Knight added one twist by not saying NOW until the halftime talk.

His team came out like a Ball of Fire πŸ”₯, turning  a 32-26 deficit into a 61-40 victory to cap the Perfect season. The second half run πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ was 34-8 with the fourth quarter being 21-3. Again, there was push back, this time the Producers were saying that nobody would believe 21-3.

Final scene – after Knight cut down the nets, he looks over at his former player and says…..I couldn’t have done it without you, I Love You Man.

As the scene fades out, we here Kris Richardson as Bobby Huggins say- you know that I told you the exact same thing.

Roll Credits – the Morale of the Story is the team remains undefeated because the Junior Varsity led the way……..

Going to stop βœ‹ fighting Sleep πŸ’€ for a bit and when I wake ⏰ up from a Nap, I will play the role of Journalist and write ✍ a gamer…..

Journalism for JV

Carroll County JV – 12.  16.  22.  2 – 52

Carroll County – Gravley 16, Jackson 10, Reed 8, Rakes 6, Lark 4, Collins 3, Leonard 3, Jones 2.

Coach K’s thoughts :

Wow! What an awesome 3rd quarter! To hold any team to just a single point for seven minutes is quite a feat. We were definitely dialed in defensively.

The guys tonight really had active hands to get deflections and anticipated passes to get steals which led to easy baskets.

Every guy played hard and contributed to this impressive win!

Stories to come later tonight….

In a Blink of an πŸ‘, Thursday night became Friday Morning πŸŒ„. Here is the Need to Know about Sunday March 2nd in Laurel Fork…

Each year we create a keepsake Ticket 🎟 and the screen shots above will become this years version. Ron Cochran at Omega will be creating these for the 3rd straight year.

Here is the Lineup for the Day :

From 3 pm to 4pm I will be borrowing a page from Tauren Wells by hosting a Q & A session in which I will happily Answer any questions that someone wants to ask of me, about any part of what I do.  This session is open to anyone interested in learning more about the past 5 years. No ticket required for this and it will be a great test to my Claim to transparency.

Β  At 4:00 pm SHARP we will begin our program. We are hoping that all of the invitees will be there and  seated so we can start on time.

Β  In regards to dress, we encourage people to look sharpe / pretty but I promise you nobody will be turned away for lack of proper attire. One of the goals is to give folks an opportunity to look their best outside of a Church or Funeral Parlor but once again, don’t require it.

There will be four lengthy Celebrations, one Tribute and roughly a couple of dozen heartfelt β™₯ acknowledgements to people that have contributed their time to our cause in the past 12 months.

Β  In order, the Tribute to our retiring School Leader, Dr. Burnette will be in the leadoff position. Last year we saluted the career of retiring Athletic Director, Darrin Mathews and this will follow along those same lines. Dr. Oliver McBride, Principal Chuck Thompson and recently retired Mathews will each play a role in this.

Β  We will sprinkle in the minor acknowledges here and there before beginning our Awarding the 2nd Annual Kevin Burress Humanitarian Award which will be going to Vickey Ritchie. Burress will be on hand for the actual Hardware that goes with this honor πŸŽ– and we have a Top Shelf team assembled to pay tribute including Dr Burnette, Marion Harris, Brandi Cochran, Dr Samantha Reed and Chuck Thompson.

Dinner will begin at 5pm and Mr Travis Osborne will hopefully be in the House to Bless the Meal. Travis is one of many who will have to make their way back from Travel Volleyball 🏐 in Blacksburg earlier that day.

Β  Next up will be the ultra 😎 cool block of time where we salute the duo that I like to call Casey & Combs. This segment will be something never done before and should be very memberable.  Folks involved with this will be Casey Burcham, Steve Combs, Rick Nester and a group of hard working πŸ’ͺ journalists !

Β  Next up will be a tribute to the Laurel Fork duo of Mr Paul Nester and Mr Donald Dalton.  We will be showing our immeasurable gratitude for their efforts this year by presenting our prestigious John Culp Person of the Year award.

Β  We look forward to hearing from my Co-Host, Kris Richardson βž• Rick Nester βž• Paula Richardson βž• Chuck Thompson and Paul himself will explain the lifetime connection with he and Donald.

Β  We will wrap up the process with the presentation of Our Jay Neal Lifetime Achievement Award to an amazing young Lady πŸ‘© that I call Addie’s Grandma πŸ‘΅. She also goes by her alias, Tammy Quesenberry.

Your list of folks prepared to shine a light here are Hagen Giles, Dr McBride, Chuck Thompson and myself.

Once again we will create a livestream of the event so that anyone interested can watch from home 🏑.

Some of the other folks not listed above who will be acknowledged include Velvet Leonard, Shannon Dalton, Donna Nester, Kevin Burress, Marion Harris, Mama Smoot and our Rookie of the Year Award going to newcomer Bill Gallimore πŸ‘.  (We might set an unbreakable record in regards to oldest Rookie of the Year with this one.πŸ˜€)

Rick Nester, Cindy Edwards and Anthony Barnes will each have a moment in the Sun.

There are two invitees that are still pending in the Father & Son team of Eddie and Dakota Walls & Beth Bouldin. Each of these folks were willing to jump on the always moving Train πŸš†.

Β  Rick Nester will lead a Moment of Silence in honor of Mr. Jeff Tobler.

Β Β We have other nips and tucks to straighten out, but that’s the beauty of Staging a Production that is 100% built on our Platform !

If your name appears in this story and you have any questions πŸ™ please reach out to me. Also, PLEASE know that if your name appears here that you have made a difference !

Mrs Shannon Dalton stops βœ‹ by to put the “A” in our A.S.P.N as MAAC finally gets to represent The Hill!

Kevin DeHaven checks βœ” in..

Down 27-16 with 4:32 left in JV game. Ladies are playing hard.

Marion Harris shares the Varsity team warming up…

51-35 Patrick final. We hope to continue our coverage πŸ™ as the night plays ▢️ out.

Our Kevin DeHaven adds :

Varsity lost 51-35. Played better but just couldn’t get over the hump.

More Pics from Marion ! Great Jump Ball capture !

The art of building on a story is what you have been witness to tonight. The goal behind a Positive Only Site is to make sure that the platform is available to every Coach at every level in our system.

Equality is Priority One. The fact that a number of people don’t see a purpose in what I feel is the most important thing ing my life, is beyond my control.

I was in the Gymnasium two nights ago and I watched two sets of Coaches, none of them had Nike shoe deals, do their best to provide guidance for our Student Athletes. That is the first half of the equation, with the second half being two group of young Ladies giving their Best effort πŸ‘ to follow said Coaches.

Here are some of the thoughts now that Marion Harris gathered for us in regards to the Junior Varsity efforts.

The JV team scored the most they have this season and the coaches all agreed that the team is starting to get healthy and finding the right combinations on the court.

Another thing that was impressive tonight is how the team went from first whistle to the last whistle and never let up.

The team really worked well together and hustled the entire game.

The coaches wanted to give a shout out to Madison Adkins for a very well played game tonight against Patrick Co…

Marion asked me to please build on that, which is what I was doing in the previous paragraph.

The beauty in Marion Harris trying to get this story told is by my math he and Shelia are close to 20 years from having a Child or Grandchildren playing JV Girls πŸ‘§ Basketball πŸ€…

I  am a Fan of All Things Junior Varsity, regardless of the season or the Sport. It’s my burden to deal with but I do it happily.

Our Lady πŸ‘© Cavaliers JV team is short on Basketball πŸ€ experience and the roster itself is short on actual bodies. But from what I can tell, it’s not short on people who Care.

There’s my favorite word – CARE. It’s so meaningful that we put in the name of our efforts !!!

Thank You Kevin DeHaven, Mama Smoot, Marion Harris and Allen Worrell for covering the Varsity end of the double header ! Please remember to check out his Gamer tomorrow πŸ™.

I will sign off with THANK YOU to anyone who took the time to read this article.

Allen Worrell hits our Inbox πŸ“₯ with two more pics !
